{ Marguerite's 4th Birthday Party } My two daughters are big fans of Elephant and Piggie, the hilarious characters from Mo Willems' books. In one of his stories, 'I Am Invited To A Party!' Gerald and Piggie are so excited about their invitation, Gerald starts to give advice to Piggie on party attire. Spoiler alert!: The party ends up being a fancy costume pool party and thanks to Gerald the two friends get the dress code right. I thought it would be fun to recreate this for my daughters and their little friends, so I sent a copy of the book to each guest with the party invitation and asked them to come prepared ;-) It was the perfect occasion for them to wear their favorite costume, and I must say they didn't disappoint us! We had Elsa from Frozen, Belle, Sleeping Beauty, an astronaut, a movie star, a policeman, a firefighter, Merlin... I created a 'sweet' table to reflect a bit of the craziness and chaos of the book; silly and festive! When I asked Marguerite what food she wanted to serve, she promptly and fittingly answered, "Pigs in a Blanket!" :-) And of course there was a photo booth where all the props were edible. It was a huge hit! For the cake we had our two favorite characters wearing their party costumes from the book, and of course we asked for a funfetti cake! PARTY! PARTY! PARTY! For entertainment the children took instant photos of themselves, and we colored some pages from Elephant and Piggie books. We also hosted a Genie who made the children laugh and giggle. The take-home favors were a delicious "Elephant and Piggie" jelly bean mix which was a great complement to the adorable book we sent to each child before the party. Piggie & Gerald Birthday Party (based off of the Mo Willems series- Piggie & Elephant Books) Ok, so my baby boy is now 7. I can't grasp that fact. It seems like yesterday... I won't digress but all those reading this that have kids I am sure you understand. Anyways back to the party... So here is the cake I made: I am still a cake amatuer. I only started making cakes, well 6 years ago for my son's 1st birthday. Here are a couple of my favorites over the years: I also made cupcakes to take to school on his actual birthday. They turned out so cute! I got the idea from parenting.com So for the party I made, with the help from my sister, a pig pinata. I decided not to make it look like Piggie from the books because I didn't want the kids to hit/beat up Piggie but I thought the idea of breaking up a piggie bank sounded ok, so I fashioned the pinata after that. (This reasoning sounds logical but my 2 year old still screamed and cried that the big kids broke her pig). Here is a tutorial on how I made the pig: pig tutorial Once the candy comes out of the pig where are the kids to put it? So I made cloth goodie bags big enough to hold a bottle of bubbles, a stencil and a pencil but also candy from the pinata. I used the freezer paper technique that I read about on http://www.dana-made-it.com/ I used my Cricut and a program called Sure Cuts Alot to cut Piggie & Elephant out of freezer paper. I ironed the freezer paper on to the fabric and then applied paint. After they had dried it was time to make them into bags. I took 2 rectangular pieces, one with the character and one blank and rolled under the sides so that the exposed edges were curled under. Next I rolled down the top to the width of the ribbon I used as the drawstring and sewed across it. Leave the sides open for the ribbon. Sew the 2 pieces together at the bottom, with the right sides together. Next sew up the sides and flip the bag right sides out. Pull a ribbon through one way and knot. Take a second ribbon and pull through the opposite way and knot on the opposite side. Now when you pull both ribbons at once the bag pulls closed.

So if you don't know who Piggie and Gerald are then you must not have an elementary age kid in your house (and if you do and don't know who they are you need to go to the library!!) The Piggie and Elephant Books by Mo Willems are my son's absolute favorite. He has read every book about 30 times each. I hear him in his room at night giggling and I know he is reading about Gerald and Piggie's shenanigans. So when I am faced with a theme for my 7 year olds' birthday party my first thought was Piggie and Gerald. So I will continue to add to this post as I create more and more for his party in 2 weeks, right now I finished a couple applique tee shirts with his favorite characters. I just did a simple applique- using felt so it won't fray and I didn't have to zig-zag stich making the outline intrusive to the desgin. I also designed a comic book style invitation for the party.
