Auch wenn eine Zeit lang New Yorker Wolkenkratzer ihr Bildthema waren, ihre Motive fand Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) doch zumeist in der Natur: Blumen, karge, menschenleere Landschaften und Tierknochen, die im Wüstensand bleichen. Durch die Vergrösserung winzigster Blütenblätter zu einem leinwandfüllenden Format schuf O’Keeffe eine protoabstrakte Bildsprache aus Formen und Linien, die ihr den Spitznamen „Mutter des amerikanischen Modernismus“ einbrachte. Als Poster und Kunstdrucke sind ihre Bilder heute auf der ganzen Welt millionenfach verbreitet. Im Jahre 1946 war O’Keeffe die erste Künstlerin, der eine Einzelausstellung im New Yorker MoMA gewidmet wurde. Nach dem Tod ihres Ehemannes und Impresarios, der Fotografenlegende Alfred Stieglitz, zog O’Keeffe in die Wüste von New Mexico, die ihr mit ihren scharfen Schatten, dem gleissenden Licht, Felsformationen, Canyons und einsamen Adobe-Häusern nun die Motive für ihre Bilder lieferte.
