Sculptor Ra Paulette digs caves in New Mexico’s sandstone cliffs. Not plain, rocky, boring ones. Ra’s caves are smooth, artistic, and breathtakingly beautiful, and he creates them with his bare hands. His only tools – a pickaxe and a wheelbarrow. 67-year-old Ra came into his unusual profession after years of being a drifter. He was a college dropout, was discharged from the U.S. Navy and hitchhiked his way across America. He worked on a series of odd jobs – postal employee, security guard, janitor, and even farmer and one point. We created this map with the illusion of 3D by applying Digital Elevation Data and meticulously adding shaded relief to the landscape of the original. The map of Arizona and New Mexico was first published as part of the 1970 United States National Atlas created by the USGS and includes political boundaries, cities, railways, roads, ferry lines, Indian reservations, national forests and parks, mountains, mesas, valleys, deserts, bodies of water, drainage, coastlines, and islands. The shading that we added is printed on the paper and is not a result of the map protruding from the surface. This map contains all or part of Arizona and New Mexico Please Note: Text on the map can be difficult to read due to the small font size and the age of the map. In areas where the relief shading covers the text, the underlying text is not legible. We suggest the largest size map for better details though the text may still be covered in the darker areas.
The Catwalk Trail in New Mexico offers a unique hiking experience through Whitewater Canyon, following an old steel pipeline
The next morning we hiked through the old ruins at Pecos National Monument. The village of the Pecos people (the monument) sits high on a grassy hill between two rivers. The village was once used as the main trading area between the Pueblo farmers and the hunting tribes from the buffalo plains. The Pueblo period ended with the invasion of the Spaniards in the late 1500’s. The village then began to expand with new buildings, most of which were used as religious sanctuaries. Although the sun was shining bright we still had to layer up. Bundled with our winter hats and gloves on we were able to walk through the village. We past several foundations and walked through the primary church. It was an interesting and informative walk but nothing made us happier than returning to the warm car. By three we had driven through Albuquerque and had settled in for the night at the home of a good family friend. Thanks again Ann!
