Let's jump into READING GENRES! Do you teach and discuss reading genres? I feel like with the ever so popular 40 book challenge genre is a buzz word in education right now...and I love it! I think its so good that we get the opportunity to explore to books with our readers. Gerne is so important because it's a springboard into reading! I wanted to share some of my favorite tips and activities for teaching about reading genres and weaving throughout the curriculum throughout the school year. #1 Make it RELATABLE First--the word genre is kind of fancy. But if you break it down and explain that it's really just a genius word for categories then it isn't that intimidating. Just about everything has categories...food, movies, music...and books too! My favorite tool that we use are genre notes and we use them throughout the year. As a class we brainstorm keywords that could be found in a book summary or events that happen in a book. We make a list of these key words that are dead giveaways as to what a books genre is. #2 Make it Hands On If you are going to focus on genres we have to put books in the hands of our students. I round up chapter books and picture books and create genre mystery bags for students to sort, categorize, and discuss. There are so many ways to spin this activity! Sometimes I have students search through the books for a specific genre, sometimes they need to "gene-lize" all of the books. It's a great way to get your readers thinking and talking. #3 IRL Practice (In REAL LIFE) One of my favorite and super authentic ways to help students determine genre is to print up Goodreads and Amazon book summaries. You can as a class go through the summaries and highlight those keywords and clues...it's real life and real easy. After some class practice it's easy to then have students go through summaries on their own. A bonus to this activity is often students read a book summary and they want to read THAT book. It's a great assessment but also exposes students to different books. Doesn't get better than that! #4 Talk the Talk If we are talking about it then your students will see the importance. When we are reading our #picturebookaday picture book you can bet that we are discussing genre. When students share some favorite books--you know that's the perfect time to ask and tell about genre. During guided reading/reading groups and book conferences have students share what they know! They can share events in books or keywords that they spot in their reading. Genre should be a talking point throughout the whole year. I love using these genre posters to write down books that students know in that genre. It's also a great resource if they are searching for a particular book to read in a certain genre What do you do to teach genres? {Shameless plug for my GIVEAWAY} Sorry! But, here's a freebie for enduring it. My team and I had to teach "Sequence in Research" last week. Really? How do you do that? Remember funny co-worker {the Gone With the Wind one}, she suggested that we complete research on famous African Americans for Black History month. Then, we could use this to help them sequence their report. Brilliant! We began our research by going to several websites including Biography.com and Factmonster.com. Both were very valuable resources. Especially Factmonster. This week, we are using the information we gathered to create a three paragraph biography. The information has been great. I wanted a culminating activity that we can hang in the room {and take down the Conversation Heart stories...those pieces of candy are starting to look gross...}. So, this afternoon I created this poster so that my students can complete it while I'm gone {AGAIN} at another in-service tomorrow. The document on TpT and TN does not have a gray background. I only did that to be able to show you on here. I took a screen capture of it. Is that the best way to do this? If you are loading documents, how do you load a picture? Do you have another method? Le projet de la « porte-bonheur », que j'ai instauré dans ma classe de 5e année (élèves de 10 ans) cette année, a comme but d'apporter mes élèves à apprécier les petits moments de la vie. Il permet aux jeunes de poser un regard sur ce qui les rend heureux et aide à établir un climat de bienveillance dans la salle de classe. Voici comment le mettre en place avec vos élèves. Pourquoi un projet sur le bonheur? Je crois vraiment que le bien-être de l'élève est ce qui est le plus important. Rendre la salle de classe un endroit où l'enfant se sent bien, entièrement en confiance, écouté, en sécurité. Les élèves sont en classe la majorité de leur journée. Si nous calculons, ils sont en classe en moyenne 6h par jour, 5 jours semaine. Leur classe est donc leur deuxième maison. Ma mission #1 est donc de s'assurer que chaque élève soit bien et heureux en classe. Si je réussis cette mission, les élèves seront ensuite en mesure de bâtir leur confiance, ce qui leur aidera énormément dans leurs apprentissages (côté académique). Je désirais transformer l'atmosphère négative en atmosphère positive en classe. Je voulais trouver une façon pour mes élèves d'être positifs et d'apprécier la vie. J'ai donc décidé d'enseigner le bonheur. Je me suis dit qu'il y a tant d'adultes qui sont toujours en quête du bonheur, pourquoi ne pas leur dire LE secret du bonheur à 10 ans-11 ans. Les aider à apprécier le moment présent en découvrant ce que veut dire être heureux pour eux. Une leçon qui leur servira pour le reste de leur vie. La « porte-bonheur » Comment ça fonctionne? On ne peut pas lancer une idée sans entièrement comprendre l'intention derrière. La mienne : Que l'élève apprenne à être heureux (le bonheur vient de l'intérieur). J'ai donc débuté l'activité avec une leçon sur le bonheur. J'ai fait un diaporama sur tous mes petits bonheurs personnelles, ou comme je les appelle, mes caresses au coeur. J'ai expliqué que la joie peut se ressentir différemment pour chacun mais pour moi, c'est comme recevoir une caresse au coeur, des picotements et une chaleur au coeur, un sentiment de « je suis bien ». Nos petits bonheurs sont tous différents et changent avec le temps. Certains restent les mêmes toute notre vie mais nous en découvrons de nouveaux avec le temps. Le bonheur n'est pas seulement lors de gros événements, de petites situations « banales » peuvent être des caresses au coeur. Voici quelques exemples de choses qui me rendent heureuse que j'ai présentées dans mon diaporama : ma première gorgée de café le matin, marcher en forêt à l'automne, ma famille, mes enfants, mon mari, mes amis, le pain doré, essayer quelque chose de nouveau, rendre quelqu'un heureux, écouter de la musique très forte en voiture, me mettre en pyjama et pantoufles après le souper, marcher sur la glace mince et l'entendre craquer sous mes bottes, certaines chansons, certains souvenirs, certaines senteurs, mes élèves, etc. Le bonheur n'est pas d'attendre une situation spécifique qui nous confirmera que nous sommes heureux. Le bonheur est de reconnaître lorsque nous avons une caresse au coeur, s'arrêter pour prendre le temps de la ressentir, et ensuite revivre ces petits bonheurs quotidiennement. L'accumulation de toutes ces caresses au coeur font en sorte que je suis une personne heureuse. La « porte-bonheur » Par la suite, j'ai présenté notre « porte-bonheur » (j'ai choisi la porte puisqu'on la voit plusieurs fois par jour mais on pourrait choisir un autre endroit dans la classe). J'ai demandé aux élèves d'écrire un de leurs petits bonheurs sur un post-it et de le coller sur la porte. À tout moment de la journée, aussitôt qu'ils ont une caresse au coeur, ils sont invités à l'écrire sur un post-it et à l'ajouter à notre porte. Leur post-it peut rester anonyme et s'ils préfèrent le mettre derrière la porte (pour qu'ils soit moins à la vue) ils peuvent le faire aussi. Ceci permet aux élèves de non seulement se concentrer sur le positif et d'apprécier le moment présent mais également de reconnaître ce qu'est le bonheur pour eux. Trois mois plus tard, notre porte est colorée de bonheurs positifs! La « porte-bonheur » lors de sa première semaine La « porte-bonheur » trois mois plus tard La réaction des élèves J'ai été éblouie par la réaction de mes élèves, ils se sont tous engagés dans l'activité dès le début. Ils ont accroché et continuent à ajouter leurs petits bonheurs quotidiennement pour certains, et de façon hebdomadaire pour d'autres. J'ai vu des résultats presque instantanément. L'atmosphère changeait petit à petit et le sourire de mes élèves me confirmait que c'était une réussite. Quelle est ma plus grande caresse au coeur cette année? Lire tous les petits bonheurs de mes élèves à chaque après-midi. Mylène Goulet Pouliotte enseigne au primaire à Ottawa en Ontario depuis 2008. The Titanic always hooks kids on reading. Whether it is the trajedy, the science, the history, or the fact that they have seen the movie 5 times with their families- they love the topic! I decided to create a great Titanic unit during my last year teaching, with one student in particular. He was already an expert, beginning 4th grade, and has not cracked the reading code yet, despite his and his parents's endless work! My resource language arts class is composed of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who require an alternate reading and writing curriculum. We started with Finding the Titanic by Robert D Ballard (who discovered the remains of the shipwreck in 1986). It is readable and fascinating, chronicling the life of young Ruth Becker, who ends up being a survivor, as well as showing us photos from the cameras that Dr. Ballard sent down. The students loved it as much in 2017 as they did when I first read it with my class in 1998! We read more books, found photos and information on the Internet, wrote summaries and reports, and we painted! I have to admit that I have had enough of the Titanic for a while, but the resource students are Titanic experts and have read the books and written the reports to prove it! Here is the new unit- hot off the press! TITANIC Reading, Writing, and Art for Special Education The students were proud of their Titanic art, and rightly so. Everyone can be an artist, and it really lets students shine, and brings out a whole other side of their thinking, planning, and pride.

"Le livre à syllabes permet aux enfants d'apprendre à segmenter et combiner les syllabes orales (activités phonologiques), ainsi qu'écrites (principe graphophonologique). Ce travail au niveau du composant, le plus accessible à tous les enfants (la syllabe), facilite la compréhension ultérieure du principe alphabétique. Chaque fiche est découpée verticalement par le milieu, ce qui isole à la fois les deux syllabes du nom (tous les noms sont bisyllabiques) et les deux parties, avant et arrière, de l'animal. On peut ainsi former, par recombinaison, toutes sortes d'animaux chimériques, comme le "torpion" (avec l'avant d'une tortue et l'arrière d'un scorpion)." Pour construire ce livre, il suffit d'imprimer les pages, de les colorier (facultatif mais meilleur rendu), de les plastifier, les perforer, les couper en deux au milieu (au niveau du trait entre les deux syllabes) puis de les relier.
