These Genetics Task Cards come in digital and print formats and cover the basics of genetics and inheritance of traits. These are great to use for formative assessment/review during a unit or before a quiz. The questions draw from the Understand, Apply, Analyze, and Evaluate levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy. The topics covered are: inherited and acquired traits, dominant and recessive alleles, hybrid and purebred, phenotype and genotype, Mendel’s pea plant experiment, homozygous and heterozygous, Punnett squares, incomplete dominance, co-dominance, polygenic inheritance, sex chromosomes and how gender is determined, the basic concept of meiosis to produce gametes, sex-linked traits, environmental affect on gene expression, and recognition of a pedigree and a karyotype. The students answer each of the 28 questions and write down the answer letter on their answer sheet. They should also circle the emoji that corresponds to their confidence about their answer… either “Got it right!”, “I’m pretty sure but not totally!”, or “I’m just praying it’s right!” There are two ways to facilitate this activity, a print version and a digital version: Option |: Print the 4-cards per sheet version. So we just finished a chapter in Science and that means it was time for a lab or experiment. The last lesson we hit was on Genetics...which can be super tough for 5th! Explaining the concept and having the students truly understand was tricky. We started out by watching the free Brainpop video on traits and heredity (its even one of their FREE ones) that reinforced our concepts and vocab from the book. I sometimes do these videos first to introduce a topic or do them after as a review and stop for vocab. We do the quiz together and reinforce what we have been talking about. After our big test, I wanted to take it a step further. My students really seemed interested in this topic so I came up with Monster Genetics! We did this lab as a fun way to review dominant and recessive traits! Basically you play "rock, paper, scissors" to come up with which gene you inherit from that parent and then you display the dominant or recessive trait based on the 2 genes (genotype) you have. My students had a BLAST being so creative while reinforcing what we already learned and using the vocab we covered. I included monster bodies, directions, lab sheets, Punnett square pages to cross your monsters (for higher level classes), dominant/recessive trait posters, samples, and more.... click any of the pictures to check it out! It was great so fun to have some theme worked into upper elementary. I love that I got a chance to do something October related for the season all while connecting it to curriculum. So we just finished a chapter in Science and that means it was time for a lab or experiment. The last lesson we hit was on Genetics...which can be super tough for 5th! Explaining the concept and having the students truly understand was tricky. We started out by watching the free Brainpop video on traits and heredity (its even one of their FREE ones) that reinforced our concepts and vocab from the book. I sometimes do these videos first to introduce a topic or do them after as a review and stop for vocab. We do the quiz together and reinforce what we have been talking about. After our big test, I wanted to take it a step further. My students really seemed interested in this topic so I came up with Monster Genetics! We did this lab as a fun way to review dominant and recessive traits! Basically you play "rock, paper, scissors" to come up with which gene you inherit from that parent and then you display the dominant or recessive trait based on the 2 genes (genotype) you have. My students had a BLAST being so creative while reinforcing what we already learned and using the vocab we covered. I included monster bodies, directions, lab sheets, Punnett square pages to cross your monsters (for higher level classes), dominant/recessive trait posters, samples, and more.... click any of the pictures to check it out! It was great so fun to have some theme worked into upper elementary. I love that I got a chance to do something October related for the season all while connecting it to curriculum. Perfect to use for open house presentation or class display of taught standards. Instructions to start: ** Teacher reviews anchor chart terms and meanings with the class. Part 1: Students flip 2 coins to determine traits inherited (one coin represents mom and one coin represents dad). They circle the capital letter, if it lands on heads. They circle the lower case letter, if it lands on tails. Then they write the genotype (Ex: TT, Tt, tt) and the phenotype (Ex: Tall or short). When they finish the recording sheet, the teacher checks their sheet and provides them with supplies to make their Tator Babies. Part 2: Create the Tator Babies using supplies Part 3: Students will use the anchor charts to help them fill out the "What We Learned" sheet.
