Inspired by a garment in the collection of the Shetland Textile Museum, this jumper is a great introduction to Gansey style knitting. Knit in Aran weight and from sizes 24-37”, this gansey is knitted in the round to the armholes, then the front and back are worked separately back and forth. The shoulders are joined and the sleeves are worked from the cuff up and sewn into place. The kit contains the yarn and pattern to knit the Gremista gansey. You will also need: 3.5mm needles for ribs 4mm needles Double pointed or circular needles can be used.
This kit includes the Anchor Gansey pattern designed by Rita Taylor. A traditional style gansey with split welt then joined to work in the round.
I designed a sweater that used classical gansey/guernsey motifs in a modern, fashionable way. I used a classic off-white color, but the yarn has some slub in it and I paired it with a strand of glitter laceweight to add some modern appeal. It’s great fun researching old gansey motifs: one of them is called "Polperro Laughing Boy". I just had to use that one… It's knit in the round, bottom-up, with set-in sleeves that are knit separately. It’s bordered with garter, included the picked-up and knit neckband. It has negative ease. Pattern repeats note: All the different motifs have different repeat lengths, so there is no amount of stitches that would work for all the motifs. Some motifs will end abruptly at the marker.

Willow adds the satisfaction of classic gansey knitting to the simple, oversized shape of this pullover. The cuffs and hem are in a broken rib, keeping the sleeves and body from pulling in. An abbreviated version of the gansey motifs is worked into the sleeves at the shoulders. Worked from the bottom up, there's a great mix of meditative knitting and subtle challenge in this soft, ultra-cozy piece. This pattern is also available as part of the Plain & Simple collection.

This gansey features circularly knit horizontal patterning with simple shoulder extensions, seam stitches, bisected underarm gussets, and ribbed cuff, neckband, bottom edge. It is knitted the round from the cast-on to the underarm, then knitted flat in the upper body to the shoulders. Once the shoulders are joined, the sleeves are picked up and knitted down to the cuffs. A seamless garment! Featured Techniques: Rig ‘n’ Furrow Shoulder Extensions, Kitchener Stitch. Yarn: heavy worsted weight Finished Sizes: 22”, 24.75”, 27.5”, 30”, 32.75”. This pattern is also available in sportweight. I have gotten questions regarding the repeat of the first pattern motif which is a diamond. The actual repeat of this motif is 6 +1, not 12 as it seems in the chart. For the small size: 100/2= 50 sts for front or back 50-1 seam st = 49 sts Actual repeat is 6+1 49 sts/6 sts= 8 +1 Motif A repeats across the front 8 times and the last st (before the seam st) is worked like the first st of the motif, to complete that diamond.
Wrap yourself in airy warmth with a geometric stole inspired by motifs from seamen’s ganseys. Knit and purl stitches create reversible blocks of diamonds, arrows, and moss stitch that grow quickly into a simple and satisfying project for beginners or veteran knitters. Knit Ludlow with either two strands of Loft or one strand of Shelter on a large needle for a feather-light fabric and heightened stitch definition. You may want to follow a custom of gansey knitters and hide your initials or the date amongst the patterns in one of the bands. Designer: Julie Hoover Collection: Fall 2014

The Design “Enduring tradition and all-weather style.” Knit in a tightly spun traditional 5-ply Guernsey yarn, this all-weather cap is handsome on men and women alike. The eight-part decrease rounds create a flat circular top, while a firm gauge keeps the gansey-textured crown band standing at attention for pillbox styling. Or you can pull it down low over your ears like a beanie when the wind comes up! We love the tradition and history of ganseys—warm, durable, yet supple garments knit with 5-ply Guernsey wool, originally developed to protect seafarers from the cold and sea spray. Family patterns were developed from the original and handed down from generation to generation. We’ve provided two traditional gansey pattern charts here, but you can also create your own using this pattern, and share it with family and friends. Start a new tradition! If you wish to increase the size a little, you can fine tune the fit with blocking. For a smaller hat, you can work to a slightly tighter gauge on a smaller needle and block to fit. Five-ply Guernsey is out there, but a little rare. Curiously, 50g of fingering-weight sock yarn had roughly the same number of yards as 100g of fingering-weight 5-ply Guernsey. So that meant that there was as much fiber in a yard of Guernsey as in 2 strands of sock yarn. So we experimented and got a lovely, dense, beefy result that was right on gauge! This pattern provides two traditional gansey pattern charts—one simple and one more complex. It also tells you how to swap in your favorite texture chart.
