With motivation coming from personal family experiences, Bruce Gilden began photographing drug addicted women in 2015. These portraits have all been taken on the streets of notorious neighborhoods where drugs can be found and money earned to support the subjects’ habits. Gilden’s 2018 book “Only God Can Judge Me” is dedicated to women he photographed over the span of three years in Miami. Earlier this year he visited Philadelphia’s notorious Kensington neighborhood and more recently, traveled to Sao Paolo’s “Cracolândia” (Crackland). Located near Sao Paolo’s busiest train station, Luz, drugs can easily be bought and consumed in Crackland. Despite attempts to redevelop the area and dissipate the concentration of drug users, prostitutes, and homeless people, dealers and addicts still flock to these streets.

Get ready for small group central with your students! Maintaining your classroom management during small groups can be quite the task, but it becomes a lot easier when you set clear expectations. In our classrooms, students have the most important voices, but sometimes that is forgotten. This post shares 42 ways to amplify student voices.
Hey-O friends! How do you manage changing classes (my class doesn’t but I’m curious), or even moving from subject to subject within your own classroom? I teach in a self-contained classroom and it’s easy to shift subjects down the schedule a little when things don’t go as planned. #WhoopsWritingWasSupposedToStart20MinutesAgo? ahahahaha #NoShame When it’s time to check morning work, I play a song When it’s time to come to the carpet for a lesson I play a song. Subject change & it’s time to get out a different interactive notebook and folder— YES, I have a song for that! I keep a slew of songs on my iTunes and iPhone/iPad and I just click depending on what I need! It’s easy to say that it’s time to start something new and kids take that task as, “Okay I can chat with my friend now for 1049813582305 minutes”. If they’re singing—they’re on task and still able to talk–but they’re singing to a tune. When the music stops they must be ready! Beginning of the year I introduce a song for a new subject/idea slowly. I want the kids to get used to it and understand the rules that follow when the song […]

Don’t you just hate it when you finally get the hang of a reading or math program, and your district (or admin) decide it’s time to start using something new? I mean you’d think they’d know better than to mess with a teacher’s software… When that happened at my school, we were told to “trust the process” The only problem with that is that while the “process is going on”, we’re in the trenches having to figure out how to make things work. When my school first switched to i-Ready, it took me a while to get the hang of it. But after a few months, I figured out a system that worked well for ME + MY KIDDOS So, if you’re feeling frustrated, just like I was in the beginning, please know that YOU•ARE•NOT•ALONE! Hopefully, by the end of this post, you’ll have a few new ideas to get you started. The first step is to set up student folders You’ll need a folder for each student, printed iReady labels, and a copy of the iReady student recording sheet. (If you’re interested in a free copy, simply enter your email in the form down below […]

Today’s blog post is all about helping kids with writing on the lines (and coloring in the lines!) You know those pesky places we are told to write and color to keep our papers neat and legible. As adults, it’s typically an automatic thing to write on the lines. But for kids who are just learning ... Read more
Bonne gourmandise !!!

Didn’t these turn out awesome!? It’s an easy and rewarding self-portrait project for students! Graphite paper is the key to allowing younger students to obtain a good likeness of themselves. I found some good graphite paper at Hobby Lobby, next to the pencils in the art supply section. My […]
Color mixing works are always a hit in the classroom. We progress through all these variations during the year, because while it seems like a simple concept, it truly is something that takes children years to fully internalize color mixing. And, while I didn’t plan this, with St. Patrick’s Day coming up, what better timeContinue reading "four montessori color mixing lessons"
