There was a very special event in our classroom last week: I do this wedding every year to help the kids remember that u always follows q in our writing, and together they make the /kw/ sound. The kids LOVE this fun day! I send out fancy invitations – rolled into a scroll and tied with a ribbon, and the kids come dressed like queens and quarterbacks! We have a BLAST! Don’t ‘cha just love me Q and U hanging behind the kids? One of our paras made those for me a couple of years ago! The kids LOVE them! I also wrote a little story to go along with the wedding of Q and U – the kids LOVED it! (Especially the surprise ending!!) After the ceremony, we did all the typical wedding dance songs! The Hokey Pokey, The Macarena, The Electric Slide, Hot, Hot, Hot – we had SOO much fun! We had wedding cake and punch too! We made a special quilt for the bride and groom too! {Disclosure} Amidst all of the fun, I forgot to take pictures of the activities that we did! So, I made my 8 year old complete some of the activities so you can see some of the fun we had! I showed the children many words that have the qu sound – many of these words are new to them, so we had an additional vocabulary lesson. The children each chose a vocabulary word and completed the following page. Later in the day, they took their same work and made a quilt square (illustrating the word). We did a qu and /k/ sort: And made a special page for a class book: The children also signed their name with a quill pen (from a party store) on a special guest book page. It was too fun!! I can’t wait until next year! Wouldn't this be fun to do in correlation with the "REAL" Royal Wedding on Friday! I still remember watching Princess Diana walking down the aisle! thank you google images Recently our school district had another shooting threat. Our town went through its own school shooting in 1996 and every now and then we get warnings. Sadly, it’s today’s new normal. On this last call the middle school decided to keep all the kids indoors for the day. I would think the kids had a better chance at not being hit on a playground running to and fro then in a crowded hall or lunchroom of wall to wall kids, but it’s a tough call. No matter what an administrator decides it will be second-guessed if someone is hurt. School playgrounds and playground rules are definitely not what they used to be and that is a sad reflection on us. I have great memories of playground games. Here are ten of my childhood favorites: · tag (in many forms – regular, freeze, TV, etc.) · pom-pom-pull-away · baseball (work up) · jump rope · hopscotch · rollerskating · blister bars · merry-go-round · Helen Keller · Rotten Egg I imagine every school had versions of Helen Keller and Rotten Egg: We played Helen Keller in a small foyer. “Helen Keller” put a coat over her head (if she couldn’t be trusted to keep her eyes closed) and was twirled around while everyone counted to ten. Then she groped her way around the little room until she caught someone and felt who she was. If she guessed correctly Helen Keller joined the game and the one that was caught became the new Helen Keller. (A game like that would never fly today what with political correctness and students touching each other. The real Helen Keller was a favorite heroine for many of us and we thought we were honoring her to play a game in her name.) We played Rotten Egg on the big cement steps. Eight or ten of us sat quietly thinking of a color. Whoever was “it” called out a color (any color) and then one by one rapped her knuckles on our heads. If the color was the color we’d chosen we chirped, “peep, peep, peep.” “It” and a friend swung us back and forth between their arms. If we smiled or laughed everyone chimed “Ewwwww, you’re a rotten egg” and we were out. If you didn’t smile or laugh you went into the good egg pile. The game continued until there were no more rotten eggs. The last (or first depending on the day) good egg got to be “it” the next game. Two of the jump rope rhymes we used were: Spanish Dancer touch the ground Spanish Dancer turn around Spanish Dancer do the high kick Spanish Dancer do the splits Spanish Dancer go upstairs Spanish Dancer say your prayers Spanish Dancer turn around Spanish Dancer get out of town Cinderella dressed in yella Went upstairs to kiss her fella Made a mistake and kissed a snake How many doctors will it take 1…2…3… We also sang these nonsensical songs: So-and-so stole a cookie from the cookie jar. (So-and-so would say) “Who me?” (Everyone would reply) “Yes you.” (So-and-so would say) “Couldn’t be.” (Everyone would respond) Then who?” (Then so-and-so would call out another name and the rhyme would start again.) Miss Lucy had a baby She named him tiny Tim She put him in the bathtub To see if he could swim He drank up all the water He ate up all the soap He tried to eat the bathtub But it wouldn’t go down his throat (I hated it when kids taunted with this next song. It was embarrassing.) Two little lovers sitting in a tree K-i-s-s-i-n-g First comes love Second comes marriage Third comes (names two people) pushing a baby carriage (I guess I shouldn’t have disliked that jingle. It did teach us the proper order of things: love, marriage, and then children which is much better than how some play today: children, marriage, and maybe love thrown in there somewhere. And an hour later Zero the Hero said good-bye! After our visit my coworkers and I stumbled across this book in our library: Absolutely going to use it next year on Zero's first visit! Will have to be on day 20's visit this year! The author also has a story out called One that looked amazing also! TGIF! I know, corny. . . but I am SOOOO excited for 3 days off!

VERSES: Job 1:1-42:17 MEMORY VERSE: Job 1:1 "There was man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Romans. Write "Romans" on small slips of paper and hand out to the students at the end of class. PRAYER: Pray that we not only have the patience of Job, but the integrity of Job. SPECIAL SONG: Be Patient And Kind (see April - Lesson - Joseph Meets His Brothers Who Hated Him on this blog). Click on orange circle for tune. VISUAL AID: Write "JOB" on whiteboard or chalkboard. List the troubles Job had as you tell the story. LESSON POINTS: In very ancient times, a long, long time ago, there was a man named Job. Although it is spelled like the word "job" which is a chore you would do, this man's name was pronounced "Job" which rhymes with the word "robe." He was a godly man who served God with his whole heart. The Bible calls him "perfect and upright" and a "man of integrity." He lived in a country that we have never heard of before; it was called Uz. He had seven sons and three daughters. He was, also, very rich! He had 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 donkeys, and a great number of servants. He was the most important man in all of the east. But the most important thing about Job was that he loved and served the LORD God. One day, Satan came among the sons of God to present themselves before the LORD. The LORD asked Satan, "From where did you come?" Satan said he had been going back and forth on the earth. The LORD asked Satan if he had considered His servant, Job. The Lord said that there was no man like His servant Job in all of the earth. Satan said that Job only served the LORD because Job was given much, but if all of Job's 'things' were taken away, then he would curse God. God said that everything Job had was now in Satan's power, meaning he could take anything of Job's away from him, but he could not put his hand on Job or hurt him in any way. On another day, all seven of Job's sons and all three of his daughters were eating together in the oldest son's house. While Job was at his house and not with his children, a messenger came up to Job and said that the oxen were plowing in the field and the donkeys were feeding close by. The Sabeans or a nation around Uz stole the animals and killed all of the servants, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While that messenger was still talking, another messenger came up to Job and told him that fire from the sky had come down and burned up all of Job's sheep and the servants who were watching them. They all died, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While the second messenger was still talking, there came another messenger up to Job and told him that another nation, the Chaldeans, came up in three groups and stole the camels and killed all of the servants, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. While the third messenger was still talking, there came another messenger up to Job and told him that while his children were eating together in one house that a great wind blew in from the wilderness and struck all four corners of the house and when the roof caved in on them, they all died, except the messenger who was telling Job the news. When all the messengers stopped talking, Job got up, tore his coat, shaved his head, fell down on the ground and worshiped the LORD. Job said that he came into this world with nothing, and he would go out of this world with nothing. The Bible says that in all of the things that happened to Job, he did not sin or say that it was God's fault all the bad things had happened. Another day, Satan came again with the sons of God and the LORD asked Satan, "From where did you come?" Satan again said that he had been going back and forth on the earth. The LORD asked Satan again if he had considered His servant, Job. The Lord said that there was still no man like His servant Job in all of the earth. Satan said that Job only served the LORD because he was healthy, but if his bone and flesh were touched, then he would curse God. God said that Job had was now in Satan's power, meaning he could do anything to Job, but he could not take Job's life. So Satan struck Job with boils from his head to his toes. Job was in such pain and misery. He took a piece of pottery and scraped his boils and then went and sat in a pile of ashes. They did not have medicines like we have today, but ashes were clean and helped ease the pain a bit. While, in his pain, Job's wife was very discouraging. She said that Job should curse God and die! Is that what Job should have done? NO! Job said she spoke as one of the foolish women. Job asked her if they should only receive good things all the time and not bad? In all that was said during this time, Job did not sin or blame God for his troubles. Job was very patient. Job had three friends who had heard of all the bad times Job was going through and they all came by to visit him at the same time. Job was in such bad condition and looked so badly that his friends did not even know Job until they were very close to him! When they saw Job, they cried, tore their clothes and put dirt on their own heads because they were grieved that Job was going through so much pain and suffering. So the three friends did what many friends would not do. They sat with Job for seven days without saying a word. They gave him comfort by just being there with him because they could tell that he was hurting a great deal. Then Job and his three friends had very long discussions. They talked for a while and listened for a while, they scolded Job because they thought that he must have done something very wrong, but the story of Job teaches that bad things happen to good people. We just must learn to be patient and never blame God. Finally, the LORD talked to Job, Job answered some of God's questions and Job listened to God. Job humbled himself before God and recognized the fact that the LORD could do anything! God was powerful and had--and has--control over all things on the earth and in heaven. In the end, the LORD restored Job's health, his riches, his servants, and Job even had seven more sons and three daughters. The only thing different than in the beginning of the story of Job is that the LORD blessed him with twice as much as he had before! All of Job's friends came to see him and brought him gifts. Everyone brought him a piece of money and an earring of gold. So everything was better for Job in the end compared to the beginning. The Bible mentions that Job's daughters were more beautiful than any in the land. Job lived 140 more years and saw his children, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren and his great-great-grandchildren grow up. Then Job died being old and full of days. What can we learn from Job? We learn to be very patient and longsuffering. We learn that bad things happen to good people. We learn that through the silence of the scriptures, God never told Job why all of this happened, or at least it was not written in the book of Job. "Older Student" Tips: Discuss what it means, "Bad things happen to good people." Talk about the meaning of "God allows trials to take place." Read 1 Corinthians 10:13. ACTIVITY: Job's Patience Materials needed: 6" x 12" piece of construction paper (any light color), marker, crayons. Hand out paper. Fold paper in thirds, so that the two edges meet in the middle. See picture. On the outside, folded paper, write "Bad Things Happen To Good People Like Job", writing the word "JOB" is beautiful letters. Write "Job 1-42" on the outside of the folded paper. Open up paper completely. Draw two lines down the folds of the paper. In the middle section, write "We need to be patient like Job and never blame God." On right section, write "BEFORE" at the top and then list what Job possessed, for example, write "Rich," "7,000 (draw a sheep)", "3,000 (draw a camel)", "500 yoke of (draw an ox)", "500 (draw a donkey)", and many servants. On left side, write "AFTER" at the top and then list what Job possessed, for example, "very rich", "14,00 sheep", "6,000 camels", "1,000 yoke of oxen", "1,000 donkeys", "many servants", "10 children", "lived 140 more years". Color pictures of animal and decorate the middle section without covering up the words.

At the beginning of every school year teachers are gearing up to learn the names of their new students. Even before the kids walk in the door, most teachers have name cards in place and display boards with student names waiting for art work to be added. Here are a couple of fun name activities you can do with your kids in the first week of school. In Name Scoot, students write their name and answer two questions about themselves. Then they "scoot" around the room and make words with the letters in the person's name. It's fun to see who gets the most words written with their name. For this activity students take the page home and ask their parents about the history of their name. Lots of fun to share the information when they bring them back to school. I hope your school year gets off to a wonderful start!
I am making this post because I couldn't find a tutorial ANYWHERE online. I visited my best friend a few weeks ago and her 3 year old had this book that her pre-school teachers made. Sawyer fell in LOVE with it, so I knew I had to make one for her. It was fairly simple once I had all of the supplies. To make it you will need: CD sleeves (Office Depot) 1" album rings (Hobby Lobby) reinforcement labels (Office Depot) Hole Punch Double Sided Tape Different materials for texture. I used: Silky-silk fabric Leathery-leather scraps in the jewelry making section at hobby lobby Bumpy-snakeskin scrapbook paper Crinkly-plastic that I removed from the CD sleeves Furry-fur in the craft section Foamy-foam sheets Scratchy-glittery foam sheet Rough-cardboard scrapbooking sheet I first (very carefully) removed the plastic from the CD sleeves. This was tedious because the paper rips easily. Once I had the plastic removed, I made three holes on the side of all the sleeves. I then put reinforcement stickers over the holes. Next I cut each texture to the size I needed to fit into the sleeve. I then put pieces of double sided tape on the back of the material and slid it into the sleeve. Then I taped the flap shut with clear packing tape. After I had all of the sleeves finished, I put them together with the album rings. I printed a label to go in the front sleeve, and that was it! I went through and wrote in sharpie each texture. I wanted to print cute ones, but the space is pretty small so I just wrote them. It's a HUGE hit! She has been playing with it for a few days now, and it's holding up well. I have gone back and reinforced some spots with more clear packing tape, but so far she's being pretty gentle with it! I hope this helps anyone who wants to make one of these for their little one!

Have fun learning to subitize dot patterns to ten with our fast-to-prep, engaging math game. This printable card game is ideal for small group math rotations or center work. Students will play with a partner or small group to match numerals to the dots of their board, aiming for 5 in a row. What is subitizing When students can subitize, they are able to tell the number of objects in a set, instantly - they don't need to count each item. Most commonly, you can teach students to subitize with dots, ten frames and fingers. Subitizing Patterns - Standard and Non-Standard 'Standard' dot patter arrangements are those common patterns you see on dice, dominoes and math equipment. Learning to subitize non-standard arrangements is important too and will require your students being able to visualize the common or standard patterns and manipulating them in their mind. Work with the standard patterns first. Playing board games is often a child's first experience with dot patterns, those on a dice. Play lots of games and specially-made learning games, like this one of ours - 5 in a Row! Extend your learners - conceptual subitizing When your students are confident with the patterns of a particular activity (perceptual subitizing) we encourage you to teach conceptual subitizing. This is where 2 patterns are shown to a student and they can combine them (add them) instantly to know the total. Think of throwing a double 6 in a board game. They would know instantly that this is 12 if they are able to conceptually subitize. To encourage this in 5 in a Row, ask them to flip 2 cards, and find the total before covering the 2 numbers. They may need to count the total the first few times they play, but with repetition they will know the total of 2 cards, instantly. Play it over and over to give them this opportunity to develop. Our game 5 in a Row will help teach subitizing to ten with standard patterns. It is a perfect place to start your learners! Non-standard dot pattern arrangements We've also prepared something extra for you to extend your fastest learners - and it is FREE today! Roll and Cover is so easy to prep (just print the page). It will help teach subitizing of non-standard patterns for 1 to 6. Students roll a standard 6 sided die and place a counter over a matching number (non standard pattern).
