Need a fun, engaging way to help students learn definitions and vocabulary related to conservation and transfer of energy? Vocabulary cards and study slips are the perfect learning tools to help your 4th, 5th, or 6th grade students or homeschooler practice their science terms. Students will master words like convection, conduction, thermal energy, solubility and more in no time! This resource includes BONUS Google Slides versions of the vocabulary mats with moveable definitions and a Google Form Quiz for anyone who wants to implement online-based activities. WHAT ARE VOCABULARY MATS? With Definition/Vocabulary Match Up Mats, students have a mat of Energy-related terms and a page of definitions. Students leave the vocabulary word mat intact and cut apart the definitions. This encourages students to read each definition as they try to correctly match them on the mat with the term. As students practice their word knowledge again and again with these mats, their confidence and ability to define the terms grows! WHAT ARE STUDY SLIPS? Study slips include the term, definition, and a related image. To use as an independent study tool, students can hide the term, read the definition, and guess the word OR hide the definition, view the word, and recite the definition. I’ve included suggested games to play using the study slips. Included in Conservation and Transfer of Energy Vocabulary Mats: ✔ Rationale and suggestions for explicitly teaching vocabulary ✔ Conservation and Transfer of Energy Vocabulary Mat (36 terms, two mats) + Google Slides version ✔ Conservation of Energy and States of Matter Study Slips ✔ 3 Suggested Games and Game Boards ✔ Directions for Preparing Vocabulary Mats and Study Slips ✔ Multiple Choice Quizzes (with answer keys) + Google Form Quiz version ✔ Fill-in-the-Blank Quizzes (with answer keys) ✔ Terms include: convection, conduction, radiation, transfer, energy, heat, matter, molecule, temperature, thermal energy, cooling, sun, conductors, insulators, collision, states of matter, closed system, Law of Conservation of Energy, properties, mass, weight, solid, liquid, gas, description of solid particles, description of liquid particles, description of gas particles, density, volume, solution, precipitation, solubility, dissolve, evaporation, condensation, runoff GOOGLE OPTIONS INCLUDED ✔ Conservation and Transfer of Energy Vocabulary Mat in Google Slides ✔ Google Form Quiz WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING 🗣️ "This is a great pre-assessment and then again a post-assessment activity where vocabulary is concerned. It really helped me to know what the students knew/remembered from past years and it also showed me what they learned (or didn't) so I could do some intervention. Great teaching resource!" 🗣️ “I thought this was a wonderful resource for my ESL students - we used it to review science vocabulary for End of Grade testing, and they really enjoyed the hands-on approach. They worked in groups to complete it, so they also got to collaborate and discuss.” LOOKING FOR MORE VOCABULARY ACTIVITIES? Do your students constantly run into idioms in reading that they don't recognize? Mine did too - but after playing this seriously fun figurative language game, they started to notice idioms everywhere! This low-prep activity will expose students to over 200 common English idioms as they play a fun, silly guessing game. Play in small groups or as a class! This is one of my favorite review games because it's an easy and fun way to help students become more familiar with the idioms they will encounter in everyday reading. This versatile activity can fill five extra minutes at the end of class, or it can be a fun and rigorous lesson for an entire class period! (Don't miss the rest of my bestselling Figurative Language Activities Bundle!) The game includes five pages of idiom slips (over 250 different idioms!) and one page of game rules. To play, one student pulls an idiom slip from a cup, and that student has to get others in his/her group to guess the correct idiom by telling them synonyms, antonyms, context, and/or examples. Everyone takes a turn, and everyone gets exposed to a bunch of idioms. (It's like charades, but using only words.) My middle school students absolutely LOVE this figurative language game because they get to play in groups, they get to be loud, and of course they get to talk about goofy-sounding idioms. Whenever I say we are going to play a game, they always ask for this one. **I highly recommend letting students see the master list of idioms before playing this game. I always put it up on the smart board before we start so they can ask me about any they aren't familiar with. After all, the whole point is for them to learn new idioms! They get surprisingly into this part; sometimes we almost run out of time to play because they are so interested in asking about the idioms. Win! I love to use this game as an end-of-class filler activity after work is finished, and it works well as an ELA center or station. Of course, it's also a perfect lesson plan for a day with shortened bells when you can't get much else done - or that crazy school day before a holiday break! If you teach figurative language in middle school, you won't want to miss my Figurative Language Activities Bundle! I recently came across the site Kubbu. This is a site where teachers can make games and online activities for students. The activities can be made available to individual students or groups of students and the teacher can view and analyse results. Kubbu is free for teachers although is limited to using with 30 students and 15 activities at a time. If you wish to use Kubbu with a larger group of students or create more than 15 activities you can purchase a year's membership. The types of activities you can create on Kubbu include matching, sorting, crosswords and a range of quizzes. Activities are stored for 30 days and you can print paper copies of the online activities. This is an example of an online synonym matching activity. It may seem time consuming to create new activities for students but there are also shared activities available that others have made. I couldn't find many activities that would be useful for my students in the shared section although hopefully these activities will grow as Kubbu becomes more well known by teachers. Kubbu could be used with students of all age groups and could be a handy tool for practice, revision and assessment both at school or as homework. Leave a comment if you have tried Kubbu. How did you find it?
