This little original Singer embroidery & darning attachment is a fun vintage accessory to collect for the Singer Featherweight - especially for free-motion embroidery & darning. With the right instruction, feed-dogs covered or lowered, and the appropriate embroidery/darning attachment, Machine Embroidery can range from the 'Practical' (darning) to the 'Artistic' (embroidery)! You can start out simple because everything, as you know, takes practice. But, before you can start at all, you will certainly need this Embroidery/Darning Attachment to help you. Take note of the following before you begin: #1 ~ Attach a feed dog cover plate or put your feed dogs in neutral. (Raising the stitch regulator so that it sticks straight out or parallel to the floor will cause your feed dogs to neither go forward or backward and stitch in a stationary position.) Beginners usually find it easier to just cover the feed dogs. #2 ~ Attach the foot to the machine using your regular thumb screw. The coiled spring allows you to raise and lower the foot to place your work underneath it. This is not a "hopping" foot like modern embroidery foot, but rather the foot is adjustable to the thickness of your work. Simply attach the foot and slide the foot up or down. You want it to be as low as possible yet still leave allow enough clearance so that you can move your work back and forth freely. (It should not rest tightly to the fabric.) #3 ~ Using a small quilt sandwich, begin practicing your free-motion work. Yes, you can most certainly do free-motion work on your Featherweight, however, for long projects or quilts, be sure to give your motor a cool-down rest, staggering your sewing times. For example, I made a baby quilt and I quilted it in quarter time allotments allowing my motor to completely cool in between. #4 ~ Having a tube of motor lubricant is wise, too, because as the motor heats up it will wick the grease, lubricating the appropriate parts inside the motor. Red-Work, Blue-Work, Green-Work, or what-ever-color suits your fancy are going to have an entirely different meaning with the ability to embroider it on your machine. Remember the old-fashioned friendship quilts? Take your finished quilt squares to a bridal shower and have all in the wedding party sign them in pencil or water-erasable fabric ink. Then follow their signature with your Embroidery Attachment - what a unique gift to present the bride! Or even as a baby gift, you could use a vintage iron on transfer with the oh-so-darling prints and patterns from yesteryear and embroider a Nursery-Rhyme Quilt. My mother has one (which I hope to inherit someday) and it is one of her most-treasured possessions. Really and truly, with a little practice, you'll be able to follow a signature in no time at all. I watched a good friend of mine do it after just a couple samples of her own name. She finished an entire baby quilt with signatures from a baby shower. We recommend the 4" or 6" embroidery hoop for use on the Singer Featherweight 221. Anything larger is going to run into the motor area. Click here for instructions on how to use the Embroidery & Darning Foot. LOW SHANK: fits the Singer Featherweight 221 & 222K and all low, vertical shank Sewing Machines (i.e. 15, 27, 28, 66, 99, 185, 127, 128, 192, 201, etc.). Embroidery Plate & Hoop are not included, but you can order them here and here.
You can follow along with the video tutorial below for how to free-motion quilt on your Singer Featherweight or read through the text further down. Click Here To Order Embroidery Foot Click Here To Order Embroidery Foot The foot I am demonstrating today is a new, all-metal, low shank embroidery and darning attachment. If you have a 221 Featherweight, you will need to cover your feed dogs so that they are disengaged, enabling you to move around and stitch in any direction. We now have a feed cover plate replicated from an original. It works perfectly by snapping in place over the feed dogs on your Singer 221. Featherweight 221 Model Click Here To Order Feed Cover Plate If you have a 222, then you will need to lower your feed dogs by moving the front lever from “Sew” to “Darn”. Featherweight Free-Arm 222 Model When adding a feed cover plate to the 221 model it decreases the space under the foot ever so slightly. This minimal difference can alter stitch formation when using the exact same embroidery attachment on a 221 versus a 222. That's why it is important to specify which machine you will be free-motion quilting when choosing the appropriate attachment. The attachments designed for the 221 are made to accommodate this spatial constraint so that you can still move your quilt freely under the needle and likewise for the 222. Embroidery Attachment and Feed Cover Plate for a Singer Featherweight 221 Sometimes called a hopping foot, the embroidery attachment lifts with the rise of the needle allowing you to move in any direction. As the attachment falls with the needle, it holds the fabric momentarily in place as the stitch is placed. The placement of the foot as it holds the fabric is affected by the spatial difference and whether there is or is not a feed cover plate. So, definitely specify which model you need the attachment for. As you can see in this comparison photo it is fashioned similarly to a vintage embroidery attachment from about the 1930’s. The new one is a better design, however, because instead of a narrow wire which has a tendency to shift, this new one is very sturdy, capable of handling lots of movement – great for free-motion quilting! You can attach the foot to your machine in one of two ways. I have gotten used to just pinching and gripping with my right hand, but this can be a bit tricky and hard on the hands, so my husband, Carmon, helped show me a second and much easier way (thanks, honey!). I photographed it for you below. Either remove the needle and attach the foot without the needle in place or make sure the needle goes through the center of the foot. Set the foot just below the presser bar and center the hole on the foot with the needle hole. Lower the needle bar as far as it will go, making sure the spring bar rests above the needle bar as indicated by the arrow above.Tilt the foot so that the forks are situated and aligned over the screwhole on the presser bar. Screw the foot in place using your machine thumb screw.Raise the needle bar, thread your needle if you haven't already done so and attach the feed cover plate for your 221 Featherweight or lower the feed dogs on your 222 Featherweight.Things to remember: Quick, long movements will gain longer stitches in your quilting. Slow, short movements will result in shorter stitches. Increase the tension on your presser bar when working with thicker, heavier fabrics. I realize it may seem counter-intuitive to increase the pressure on the presser foot, but it is usually required to compress the multiple layers of fabric just enough so that a proper stitch forms. The batting ultimately acts like a spring, pulling the thread loop at the eye of the needle closed. This causes the hook to miss the loop resulting in a missed stitch. This increased pressure is released, however, with each up-stroke of the needle (and hopping of the foot) allowing the fabric to be moved in any direction. Start out practicing on smaller projects, such as a mug rug or placemat and work your way up to a table runner or baby quilt. When doing a baby quilt or anything larger, you will need to take frequent breaks so as not to heat the motor for too long of time periods. Breaking a baby quilt into quarters and letting the motor cool completely in between each section is recommended. Larger thread spools are advantageous for continual sewing, but they greatly affect tension due to their weight. Therefore, it is recommended that you use a Thread Stand designed for your Featherweight because it lifts the thread up off the spool and loosely guides the thread to the needle without any added tension. Send us photos of what you make! Happy Featherweight Sewing!
I receive many questions about Free Motion Quilting (FMQ) on a treadle sewing machine. Truth be told, it's not much different from quilting...

Singer Hemstitcher or Veining Attachment allows you to create the appearance of dainty Hemstitching with just a simple adjustment of your upper thread tension. Click here for instructions on how to use the Hemstitcher /Veining attachment. Attachment fits all low shank sewing machines including the Singer Featherweight 221, 222*, Singer 15, 27, 28, 66, 99, 101, 127, 128, 185, 192, 201, 237, etc... Organza scrap flower vessels are great to make. They are based on an old idea brought up to present date. I get a lot of small scraps generated from what i do and i love that they can all be used and not chucked away. Once the vessel is dry and set hard i have decorated it with beading and bead dangles before machining flowers onto organza and cutting them out using a soldering iron to seal and neaten their edges. They are ideal for putting scented petals in and dried flower arrangements. This one was made for a very dear friend of mine and she nearly didn't get it as i was so taken with it. I love Orange and so i have quite a bit of scrap orange which as you can see i really enjoyed using. My other best friend and work mate Carolyn will hate the colours as she cringes when i work in orange. This makes me smile every time i have a orange urge and so i have called this vessel "Carolyn's Delight" as i am delighted with it and Carolyn will cringe and not be delighted Ha ha
