NRHP #97000283 5045 Pon Valley Road Bloomfield Hills, MI Architect: Frank Lloyd Wright Designed in 1949 by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the L-shaped Usonian house is located in the middle of the woods with a pond on over three acres. The passive solar home uses 14,000 feet of red tidewater cypress lumber and has a maple dining table with eight maple chairs all designed by Wright. The original clients were school teachers who could've travelled the world, but instead chose to spend their retirement money on a Wright-designed house. I probably would have chosen the latter. Wright visited the house several times after construction and called it "my little gem". The Gregor Affleck house is nearby, but there's only so much architecture a girl can take in a 24 hour period, so I did not see it.

Melvyn Maxwell and Sara Stein Smith dreamed of living in a Frank Lloyd Wright house. Here’s how they made it happen on a modest teacher’s salary. By Susan Peck Photography by Brett Mountain If you keep on believing, the dream you wish will come true. If that sounds like a line from a fairy tale, it is. It was also the philosophy that helped Melvyn Maxwell and Sara Stein Smith build their historic Frank Lloyd Wright house in Bloomfield Hills in 1949. The dream began for Melvyn Maxwell (known as Smithy) in 1939, while teaching at a Detroit public school. Mesmerized by a slide presentation of Wright’s Fallingwater house in Pennsylvania, he made a grandiose vow to his fiance, Sara — also a teacher with a modest salary — “One day we will own a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.” According to an excerpt from “Frank Lloyd Wright Remembered,” after a chance meeting with Wright at his home, Taliesin, the Smiths spent hours in the architect’s studio sharing their vision of building one of his homes in Michigan. They wanted it to become a mecca for artists and musicians — hosting small concerts and art exhibitions yearlong. Wright was […]

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. designed the two-bedroom, one-bath home in 1465 sq. ft. in 1950. The house is currently (September 2013) on the market listed for sale for $850,000 and described in the listing, " Lloyd Wright had a vision to design an affordable quality home with characteristic elements of his father's Usonian homes and the Dorland home was created! Mr. Dorland said it best in a letter to Lloyd when he wrote, It isn't like living, it's like being on vacation.'' This sense of serenity was achieved as Lloyd created this home to blend seamlessly with it's natural surroundings. The awe inspiring living room features complimentary stains on large sections of wood panels to create a one-of-a-kind diamond pattern backdrop for the beamed ceilings. Walls of glass and rose colored block walls rise up from polished concrete floors to meet the ceilings. Walls of glass doors collapse into each other, creating a seamless transition into the thoughtfully planned Sylvan yard. Lloyd pulled the rose colored block and diamond pattern elements from the house and used them throughout the landscape design of the pool and patios completing his vision".
