I thought I would add a few of these lessons on the basics...I'm going to call them Art Elements. In my experience I find that people, myself included at times, can easily get intimidated by art. Now I'm very passionate about art but very practical. That's why my tutorials are step by step with pictures because I know what it's like trying to figure this whole "art" thing out. I'm always learning! ........anyhow enough of my rambling. The picture on the left is Emerald Lake . One of the amazing places I like to visit that is close by,( in Canadian terms). This is a picture that my husband took, (I have trained him quite well) as a reference for painting. Composition wise, with a few changes it is terrific. Now why does this work..... Now there are lots of "rules" out there about composition. (the Golden mean, magic x, no 2 intervals should be the same, etc.) but I usually talk about the "Rule of Thirds". I like to get the kids thinking about fractions. Basically, when you look at your picture you want to imagine that it's divided into 3 equal parts both vertically and horizontally. Now often students want to put the focal point of their picture in the center. But for a viewer it is more appealing, dynamic, etc. if it's put in, what I'm going to call, a sweet spot. The "sweet" spots are the intersections of your 3rds. If it helps you can imagine that red square or rectangle, (depending on whether it's portrait or landscape orientated), and look at the corners of it. So let's go back to our Emerald lake picture. Here I've taken a sketch I did of it and let's divide it up. Now looking at our "sweet" spots we are immediately drawn to 2 of them. The mountain and then, (on the diagonal...the eye loves those diagonals) the lodge. O.K. the lodge is a bit off the sweet spot but your eye is drawn down to it. We also have that nice dark shadow opposite it which makes it work as well. If I use the "magic X" rule this works here as well. You divide your picture up with an X in the middle. Your focal point needs to be anywhere on one of the arms of that x but not in the center. Another thing that makes this composition work is the placement of line. We have that nice mountain horizon line in the upper third of our picture. (again works with the "rule of thirds"). I talked further about Horizon Lines in this post. We also have that nice bridge to follow with that bump of the lodge( lower third of the picture) and connecting them that wonderful dynamic diagonal tree line. So what would I change.....not a lot but maybe work with a longer piece of wc paper so I show slightly more of the lake pushing the lodge closer to the sweet spot...but really this is pretty good as it stands. Let's try another..... here is a sketch of a picture my husband took of Montmarte in Paris. I'm not showing the photo as a very weary looking traveller is in it.(me) We divide up our sketch....the church is in that upper sweet spot again...... and we have some people near our lower sweet spot. and hey we also have a nice shadow on the bottom....in the actual picture the palm tree by the flag is reflecting a ton of sunlight and unfortunately I didn't capture it....when I attempt this painting I will add it. Now both of the sketches I've shown were vertical but the "Rule of Thirds" works for horizontal composition as well. When you look at this sketch I did in Maui imagine a red rectangle in the center.....what's going on in the sweet spots? Hope this helps and I didn't just confuse things.

Oh my goodness this has been the BEST first week of school!! I was so excited to meet all my new firsties and begin our adventures together! We got through A LOT of rules and routines and procedures this past week and are ready to do even more next week. One of the best things this week was our interactive notebooking (INB) using Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys reading curriculum. This series is completely Common Core aligned and is an excellent way to introduce to students the love of learning to read. We've had so much fun with the back to school week and are excited to keep learning! The kids loved putting their books together and beginning activities to help them study in the future. I have finished lessons 1, 2, and 3 (working on 4 and 5!) but I couldn't wait to share them with you! All notebooks are Common Core aligned and feature interactive components. Lesson 1 - summarizing, main ideas, nouns, sight words, short a words, Daily Edits, Main Idea sort! Daily Edits! Short a Words - pocket to keep words in to study! NOUNS! Labeling Lesson 2 - making inferences, sight words, short i words, ABC Order, understanding characters, possessive nouns, captions, Daily Edits. Understanding Characters Possessive Nouns Captions Making Inferences!!! What's in the Bag? The Daily Edits will all follow the same format, but with increasing difficulty through the year. Lesson 3 - sequence of events, beginning sounds, short o words, author's word choice, verbs. I decided to print out on my Astrobrights paper to help #colorize my classroom!! Not to sound too egotistical, but this was a BRILLIANT idea! The paper is slightly thicker than regular copy paper and it brightens up the place!!! #colorizeyourclassroom Spelling Word Slide I thoroughly enjoyed making and playing with as I'm sure the children will, too!! Totally gonna have to help them cut until they learn to do it themselves. Working on sentence order. Sequencing, allowing the children to write under the flaps. Always ready to practice handwriting! And verbs!! The story in the book for Lesson 3 is Curious George Goes to School. The target skill includes Author's Word Choice so I created a little graphic for practicing. I included a graphic organizer for George and a blank one in case we use another book and we can continue character study with a different character. I am loving the Daily Edits!! Well that's it!! Please click on the Covers below to get your own INB lessons from my TpT store. You can also find the Back to School Interactive Notebook for FREE {HERE} on my blog. Thanks for reading!! And happy teaching!

photo courtesy of cheeky @elvisrunner A few weeks ago I mentioned on Twitter that I would be taking part in a short presentation at Language Show Live. One of the cheeky #MFLTwitterati (yes, Prim, I'm talking about you!) asked if it would involve paper folding. I suppose if you look back on my more recent posts, it does appear that I am particularly keen on the art of papiroflexia. And here is another one - the concertina book. Here's how to make it: 2. Fold it into a concertina. 1. Halve a piece of A4 paper lengthways 3. Write or draw on each section of the concertina except the very top one and the very bottom one. 4. Stick something at the top and the bottom sections of your concertina. These mini-books are ideal for anything that requires a sequence, as they provide ready-made 'steps' on which to write. So you could use them for recipes, and have foodstuffs or utensils at the top and bottom, or even for a more formal piece of writing which requires the use of time sequencing phrases: Another variation on the theme is the accordion book. In this example I have stuck together two zig-zag folds and shaped them. Concertina books and accordion books are small, non-threatening and easy to store and display. Why not have a go? UPDATE 2.3.13: Here is a variation on the concertina book which was invented by Rachel Smith. The concertina forms the the steps up which the animals climb into the Ark. My Year 2 class loved this! UPDATE 14.5.13: I have been doing Les Planètes with Year 5 this half term, and was after some kind of writing activity to show off our extended sentences. Enter the concertina book!
