Sixteen pages of printable cards, showing equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages. Use them on a classroom display board or for a range of practical Maths activities!
We came across these puzzles a few years ago. The premise is that you have a bunch of questions and matching answers. Students have cards that have either an answer or question on the edge. They then have to match up the edges that have the pairs of questions and answers and eventually it will make a shape. In this case the activity is matching up different representations of the same number (Decimals, Percents and Fractions). We found these puzzles originally on the Mr Barton Maths site under the Tarsia Jigsaw Page. The nice thing here is the Tarsia software can be downloaded here (click the green button to download - unfortunately it is Windows only) and you can edit or create your own puzzles. There are even banks of hundreds of already created puzzles on the site (just scroll down on the Tarsia page and look for the smiley faces for zipped files). So this puzzle was one of theirs that we tweaked a bit. These are great puzzles to pull out when you want to break up a long class or have 10 min at the beginning or end of a class to fill. Gr7 - determine, through investigation, the relationships among fractions, decimals, percents, and ratios Gr8 - translate between equivalent forms of a number (i.e., decimals, fractions, percents) MPM1D, MFM1P - As review Tarsia Card Prep work: There are two downloads (three if you include the actual Tarsia file). The actual cards for the puzzle and the answer card. The cards for the puzzle come on 2-4 sheets (there are different styles of puzzles) and each triangle needs to be cut out (see image to the right). We have found that if you have several sets of the same puzzle (say if students do it in groups of 3) then it is best to copy each set in a different colour. That way it is harder to get the sets mixed up and easier for clean up after (ie you only need to check if there are 18 cards of each colour). We find that the cards last longer if you laminate them first then cut them. This activity can be done in groups or individually and can take about 15 min depending on the student. Hand students the entire set and ask them to match up the different representations of the same number. The outside edges are blank. In this case the finished puzzle looks like a hexagon. Note: this puzzle is challenging because many of the numbers appear more than once (eg 75% shows up as a decimal twice and a fraction three times) The video, below, is only visible in the WECDSB domain. That is, only teachers in our school board can see the video if they are logged into their MyTools2Go accounts Fractions, decimals and perccent Tarsia cards (pdf) Fractions, decimals and percent Tarsia solution (pdf) Fractions, decimals and percent Editable (xjsw) Did you use this activity? I feel like it takes students all school year and then some to remember how to convert between fractions, decimals and percents. In Texas, we start with generating equivalent numbers in 6th grade: the time when some teachers and students think math manipulatives and models are no longer needed. I strongly disagree. I struggled with math in school (which I believe is what makes me love teaching math now) and I don't ever remember working with math manipulatives or math models. No fraction models, algebra tiles, cuisenaire rods, etc. When I started teaching and understood the models myself, I understood the concepts so much better. The first time I saw dividing fractions modeled with cuisenaire rodes in grad school, I was blown away! All this to say, don't think 6th graders (or older) are too old for models and manipulatives. Some students may not need them and other will. But don't make that call for them. When it comes to generating equivalent forms of fractions, decimals, and percents, students have a hard time understanding that the numbers really are equivalent. They are different ways to tell the same story. So I always start with models. At this point students have worked with fractions and decimals and have probably heard to percents, but don't understand what they are. I start with a mini presentation to get the conversation going about what percents are. (Click the link to make a copy to your Google Drive) And we practice. Over and over and over again. I use notebook pages like this that students can refer to as they practice. Practice starts simple. I write fraction, decimals, and percent on index cards, pull students to work in small group, give them so dry erase markers and start converting. They work the problems on the small group table and I get to see where students are running into problems. Fraction Decimal and Percent conversion is a skill that students revisit all year long, so I need lots of different ways to keep students practicing. Download this sheet here for more practice. I'm spending the beginning of the summer becoming more and more familiar with the CCSS for Math. Fourth grade has a LOT of fractions, so I'm looking at what kinds of manipulatives we want need for the fall. We don't have much, and we have $$ to spend for next year. Any suggestions? I especially like shopping through EAI Education and have already found a lot that our fourth grade team can use. While I was thinking about it, I thought I'd take the time to go through an activity from this past year that I really liked (and I think the kids "got it", which is always exciting). We worked hard on fractions and decimals- specifically how they are related and not just random math concepts we have to learn. I had them do this activity- I gave them one hundreds chart and told them to create an artistic design. The next day, I handed out another hundreds chart where we put the colors together (closer to base-10 style). When they were finished, we figured out the fraction and decimal for each color and made a chart. We talked about how even though both hundreds chart design looks different, there is still an equal amount of each color. **This activity was easily differentiated based on how many colors I allowed students to use. Some students were able to handle many colors/numbers, but some were still trying to grasp the concept and only used a few colors** After our chart and "artwork" was finished, I had them practice adding fractions and decimals using equations and variables. For instance, g + r = ? (green + red = ?). They would look at their chart and write the corresponding fraction or decimal for each variable/color. They did GREAT! I was so impressed with how well they were able to handle it. We loved this activity SO MUCH that I went ahead and made it into a center. I made 24 hundreds grids plus worksheet pages for the fraction/decimal amount AND the variable equations to solve for each one. Sometimes we do this center on the Mimio and/or SMARTBoard {above}, and sometimes we do it on paper {below}...and sometimes on both. Either way, my students asked for this activity EVERY DAY. You can find this activity, the Build-Your-Own Interactive Board, or the BUNDLE of both in the RTL Store! For the colored hundreds charts ONLY, you can find them {here}. Let me know how you use them- I would love to hear more ideas! Follow RTL On
