Fox Paws is a crazily unique design by Xandy Peters. I’ve long regarded knitting a creation from another designer as an excursion into their brain. It’s often an interesting journey. In this case, …
Obsession taken to whole new level. Modified to make in the round. ( See Comments for modification explaination… message me for further questions… ) Yarn was gradient dyed attempt to salvage Critter Damaged thrift shop wool… long pieces were twice dyed in-the-ball shades of blue and green Wilton Food colors (purple is result of acid ‘breaking’ ) and the black was all the really short bits knotted together and dyed Wilton black (lumpy bumpy in a nasty way… but it was a test run, right?) Amazingly good black, I was surprised to discover. Re: Modeled by Munchkin (short and bosomy DD#2) … Cowl is too bulky and too tall… Gonna try larger needles next time! There are so many people interested in knitting the Petal Cowl and Fox Paws, but not all knitters like to jump into a project with new and uncommon stitches. I've put together this article, a video tutorial, and a free pattern to introduce the fundamental increase that makes these patterns work. I'll go over the basics of how to do the increase here, then, in the next article, we'll move on to some design tips. Stacked increases are just a lot of increases worked on top of each other. It's not too complicated, but you'll have to slip stitches back (SB) to create the stack. It may feel like you're doing the wrong thing at first, but you'll see in the video how the SB stitches look. You'll find instructions for the red swatch shown in the video below in case you want to follow along. Swatch instructions: CO 21 sts using the long tail cast on method. Work a few rows in garter stitch to stabilize the swatch. Increase row: K1*K1, [KYOK, SB2] x 3, KYOK, K5, rep from * 4 more times. (61 sts) Bind off. Stitch definitions CO - Cast on KYOK - (Knit, Yarn Over, Knit) Knit a stitch, leaving stitch on left needle; without dropping stitch, YO, knit into front loop of same stitch again, slipping stitch from left needle to complete increase. SB - Slip back to left needle. Step 1: KYOK, if you've never done this increase before, the description above will help. Your finished KYOK should look like this. Step 2: SB2, this means that you should slip 2 of the 3 KYOK sts to the left needle so that you can work them again. Step 3: KYOK, you'll be knitting into one of the stitches you just slipped back. Step 4: SB2 again. Repeat steps 3-4 until you have done this sequence as many times as instructed. For example in the swatch instructions it says"[KYOK, SB2] x 3" so you'll need to do steps 3 and 4 one more time. Step 5: KYOK Step 6: Knit ton as instructed, for the swatch, K5. Here you can see what a stacked increase looks like on the needle. It looks clumpy, but that's correct. If you want to get some more interesting practice with stacked increases, this star is a great way to use them without diving into a big project. You can also read the next article to learn more about adapting this technique for your own projects and patterns. Read about this stitch's friend the stacked decrease here, it has a video too.

Fox paws is a rectangular wrap with a distinctive stripe motif that looks like little interlocking fox feet. Using only increases and decreases, stripes are shaped into extreme waves using the same technique as the Petal Cowl pattern but with more unusual shapes. It can be worked in 2 or more colors without any stranded or intarsia techniques, There are no strange loops on the wrong side and the wrap is very stretchy and drapey. The sample shown and described in the pattern is worked in 5 colors which rotate every repeat to create a varied appearance but you can use almost any stripe pattern that you desire. a downloadable coloring page can be found in the pattern photos. I’ve also created a video showing how to weave in the yarn ends from all the stripes as you go, making the finishing almost nonexistent. an updated format of this pattern has been available since 2015 labeled as FOXPAWSnew in your library. This file uses more abbreviations and a table based layout to make everything a bit easier to read, keep track of, and count. It even allows for markers! It is somewhat painful to keep a secret that is very exciting. It is also somewhat painful to be halfway through a project and to find out the burning sensation in your mouth and nose is caused by said project. Today I can gladly announce that Fox Paws, a new flame stitch pattern, is now published after months of secrecy. In January, I started making a wrap based on on of my Crazy Stripe swatches. It was the most beautiful angora cashmere blend in my favorite fall colors (or really, all the fall colors at once). You can see it in the picture above, still unfinished because I can no longer touch it. Of course, there are no excuses for missed deadlines, So I started over in an all wool yarn from Knit Picks. This pattern is intermediate in difficulty, but is recommended for the adventurous because it contains rare incs. and decs. If you have made it's cousin the Petal Cowl you will find this to be slightly more complex. The fabric is stretchy and drapey because of how the colorwork is done. There are no color floats across the back of the work, everything is done using stripes. Palette is a great yarn to use for a 5 color pattern because it comes in nearly every color. It isn't as soft as cashmere and angora, but overall, it is much less painful than the first yarn. For a low priced wool, it is very soft and neck friendly. You can imagine the color possibilities. I cannot wait to see what people do with it. Finished Size: 70 x 20˝ (127 x 43cm) Rectangular. Yarn: Color A: 1 skein thicket, KnitPicks Palette, 50g (1.76oz), 231 yards (211 meters) Color B: 1 skein rooibos heather, KnitPicks Palette, 50g (1.76oz), 231 yards (211 meters) Color C: 1 skein coriander heather, KnitPicks Palette, 50g (1.76oz), 231 yards (211 meters) Color D: 1 skein serpentine, KnitPicks Palette, 50g (1.76oz), 231 yards (211 meters) Color E: 1 skein larch heather, KnitPicks Palette, 50g (1.76oz), 231 yards (211 meters) Needles: Size 6 (4mm) 32˝circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. Gauge: 2 reps x 2 reps in patern = 6 x 7˝ (15 x 18 cm) Other Materials: Sewing needle, pins, steamer for blocking. You can find this pattern on ravelry, or buy it here.
If you're one of the many people who has started knitting Fox Paws in the last few weeks, you know that there are certain advantages to using 5 colors of yarn. They generally look good because there are so many of them. In any case, the questions have been coming in about what to pick, how I picked my colors, and how to arrange them in the best order. I'm posting this to show a bit of color theory and process behind my decisions. I'd like to encourage all of you to add some advice that you have for other knitters as well. How did I pick my colors? Let me explain. For the first sample, I picked in a dark yarn store that carries a lot of special colorways I picked 5 out of about 12 colors they had. the other colors were aqua, watermelon, black, white, and a few grays. You can see why I ended up with these 5. You can see that I picked matching markers out and drew up some stripe arrangements. If, like most people, you do not have a set of 300 different colored markers, you can use pencils, crayons, or the computer to pick an order. Colourlovers.com has a great 5 color palette tool to help you. After realizing that only one of these colors is commercially available and that I'm terribly allergic to the yarn, I had to choose new colors. I have 3 tips for ordering colors based on digital images. 1. Don't 2. If you must, order a color card to see the yarn colors in person first. 3. If you are on a tight deadline like I was and cannot wait for a color card, base your choices on what works for others who posted projects in the ravelry database for that yarn. Basically, I got lucky. I still like the first group better for my wardrobe. When it comes to arranging the order of your colors, you need to look ad it's two direct neighboors and the color in position of stripes 2 and 5 next to eachother. The color in stripe 2 will also be the wide stripe. If you don't like this order, you could also use stripe 3 as the wide stripe (on the left of the marker drawing) and change the color order suggested in the pattern. The question of color order is completely subjective, look for what you want to see. I've made these examples folllowing the color sequence in the pattern showing what happens when you use the same colors in a different order. There are 6 different color studies. This should be enough to get you all started. Have fun playing with colors and remember that you can always swatch first.

ELIA the polar bear and GIN the robin, DIY amigurumi pattern. Detailed instructions and numerous photos of the steps. The bear is composed of 4 main parts to sew together at the end. The body is worked from the bottom up, the paws are joined to it as you proceed. The coat, boots, and scarf are made separately. Gin is composed of 4 small parts to sewn together at the end. The peculiarity of Johandmadedesign's amigurumi patterns is the attention to shapes, modeled with a carefully studied game of increases and decreases. Each stitch is a surprise, the shapes are outlined as the work goes on. ★★ You can find the pattern of the summer outfit designed for the polar bear Elia and the robin Gin here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1029216910 ★★ ★★ You can find Lea's summer outfit and accessories pattern here: https://www.etsy.com/johandmadedesign/listing/1574411099 ★★ • The STORY of Elia and Gin Gin, an enterprising young robin, had decided to explore the world. One day, a strong wind carried him all the way to the North Pole. The little bird found himself in a white and cold expanse and the only thing to perch on to scan the horizon was a black ledge. As he jumped awkwardly on the big nose of the bear Elia, turning here and there on himself, he met his deep black eyes that looked at him amused. For the surprise, the robin fell to the ground, its beak wide open: he had never seen a polar bear. From that day on, the two of them became inseparable and Elia the polar bear began to dress up so that his new friend would never lose sight of him in the snow. Gin was called that because he had a strange way of flying up and down, accentuated by the freezing weather, he looked like a drunken little bird. To keep him warm, Elia let Gin snuggle into his thick fur and made a scarf for him with a thread of his soft coat. • LANGUAGES ✔ English ✔ Italian • YARN AND HOOKS Elia the polar bear is about 10” (25 cm) tall, crocheted using Sport weight yarn (e.g. Anchor Creativa Fino) and a 2.50 mm hook. Waves of shifting color radiate from the center point of this shawl in a pulsating pattern. All of the color changes happen automatically due to the self striping yarn, creating an interesting interplay of color as the rows get longer. This is a knit version of the auras that I see when I have a migraine. Instead of hiding in the dark, I’ve knit this shawl to show what my world looks like on many, painful days. The colorwork is done entirely with stacked increases and decreases, the same type of stitches used in the Fox Paws project, at an entry level of difficulty. If you are new to these techniques, you can find introductory tutorials on youtube:Knit Tips: How to do Stacked DecreasesKnit Tips: How to Do Stacked IncreasesKYOK Demo Photographs by Beth Shepherd Peters Edited By Liz Rolle

You may prefer the original if it’s difficult to juggle multiple abbreviations in your head at once. Tech editing by Liz Rolle. She made a beautiful project while translating the pattern and has posted it and SO MANY OTHER PRETTY THINGS on her blog. If you have not yet seen the Intensywnie Kreatywna blog, it is worth visiting even if you do not read Polish.
