My Rockpool Collection has been inspired by a lot of pleasurable time spent beachcombing along the southwest coast of England in Devon, Somerset and Dorset. I’m constantly amazed and fascinated by the beautiful geological formations of the cliffs, especially when landslides have occurred after heavy rainfall and treasured fossils can be found. Each rockpool pot is unique, having been hand-formed with ‘crank’ clay, which gives it a rough sandy texture. The fossil-like texture has been created by impressing shells and fossils into the clay. (I’ve collected many of these over the years on my travels in the UK, South East Asia and Australia.) After the shape and texture have been completed, I create tiny 3D fossil ‘sprigs’ which are arranged onto the vessel in groups, just like you might find on a beach. To add colour to the vessels, I’ve used a combination of techniques, including waxing to stop glaze covering the surface, so leaving a raw creamy sand colour. I’ve also used red-brown iron oxide on some of the fossil sprigs and edges, or impressed designs, then waxed over them so that they remain raw and matt. Many of the vessels are part glazed, using either a beautiful bright turquoise, or a stormy blue/green speckled glaze, or a matt turquoise green. I love them all! Each vessel will appear as if it has just been retrieved from the sand or a rockpool on the beach. Uses: Simply a stunning decorative piece. Jewellery bowl. Sage smudge dish. Candle holder. Wash by hand. Naturally, the raw unglazed parts of the pots may stain with colourful foods, oils or waxes. Dimensions: 7cm height x 12.5cm length x 10cm width
This bivalve fossil is so cool. It is a great gift for anyone who loves mineral specimens, science and geology, or sea creatures and ocean life. This bivalve (clam) is from the late Jurassic period age -- roughly 160 million years old. It got fossilized by being filled with and replaced by sedimentary rock and now it's a time-travelling clam. It has been polished to show off its true nature. Although fossils like this out of Madagascar used to be commonplace, I hardly see these at all anymore. This is old stock. My Rockpool Collection has been inspired by a lot of pleasurable time spent beachcombing along the southwest coast of England in Devon, Somerset and Dorset. I’m constantly amazed and fascinated by the beautiful geological formations of the cliffs, especially when landslides have occurred after heavy rainfall and treasured fossils can be found. Each rockpool pot is unique, having been hand-formed with ‘crank’ clay, which gives it a rough sandy texture. The fossil-like texture has been created by impressing shells and fossils into the clay. (I’ve collected many of these over the years on my travels in the UK, South East Asia and Australia.) After the shape and texture have been completed, I create tiny 3D fossil ‘sprigs’ which are arranged onto the vessel in groups, just like you might find on a beach. To add colour to the vessels, I’ve used a combination of techniques, including waxing to stop glaze covering the surface, so leaving a raw creamy sand colour. I’ve also used red-brown iron oxide on some of the fossil sprigs and edges, or impressed designs, then waxed over them so that they remain raw and matt. Many of the vessels are part glazed, using either a beautiful bright turquoise, or a stormy blue/green speckled glaze, or a matt turquoise green. I love them all! Each vessel will appear as if it has just been retrieved from the sand or a rockpool on the beach. Uses: Simply a stunning decorative piece. Large candle holder. Sage dish. Serving dish for non-oily or staining foods. Dimensions: 7.5cm height x 18cm diameter Wash by hand. Naturally, the raw unglazed parts of the pots may stain with colourful foods, oils or waxes.
