Two fun activities for your forensic tool mark impression unit! One activity is digital and NO PREP, the other is hands on. Both will challenge your students to practice their tool mark analysis skills. 1) Digital Activity This is student-independent, just share it and let them work! Students move through 11 interactive Google Slides. They collect and compare tool marks from the crime scene and suspect tools to find a match. The resource includes a detailed Key for easy grading. It takes my 10th graders around 15 minutes to complete the assignment. 2) Hands On Activity There are two versions of the hands on activity, depending on how much time you want to spend. The Detailed Analysis activity asks students to make test marks and of various tools, measure the mark and record observations on the provided student sheet. The activity can take up to an hour to complete, depending on how many sets of tools the students are given. The Quick Activity has the same simple set up, but does not require detailed record keeping on their student sheet. It could take as little as 15 minutes, depending on the number of tools. Both hands on activity sheets include an example to guide student responses - they will know exactly what you expect them to do! Additional materials you will need for the hands on activity: Modeling Clay or Playdoh Sets of tools - three of each type. I ask my students to bring some in, or find them at yard sales. Petri dishes Rulers The resource includes a full Teaching Guide. Need more resources to teach Tool Marks? Here is a resource that includes a set of Google Slides for teaching, guided notes, a full answer key, and Google Form review questions! This is an evolving and growing product that I created to help me better understand the Forensics course I was teaching. I created these cards with 6 initial units that include: - Intro to forensics - Physical Evidence - Forensic Toxicology - Serology & DNA - Trace Evidence - Document Analysis & Handwriting There will definitely be more units added to these cards, and cards will be updated with more detail as I go through and teach each unit but these have been helpful to reference different NGSS physical and life science standards as I teach the course. These cards include information such as: - Overview - NGSS standards - Common core standards - Essential questions - Student objectives - Instructional focus Please feel free to email me with ANY suggestions or other information you might have that you think can be helpful in making this the best and most helpful product at [email protected].

If your teens love crime stories, and crime shows, then they may be interested in learning about Forensic Science in your homeschool. What exactly is Forensic Science?Forensic science, or forensics, is the application of science to establish how historical events occurred and thereby provide impartial evidence that can be used in a court of law. The term forensic comes from the Latin word forensis, which refers to a Roman business place known as the forum. The forum was a busy site where civic meetings were convened and criminal matters were debated. People accused of a crime, and their accuser, would go the forum and their arguments were presented to the judiciary. Because of its historical connection, the word forensic is commonly used in modern language to refer to legal evidence that is presented in court.
