A humanist, Walt Whitman is among the most influential American poets, often titled the “father of free verse.” He saw the transition between transcendentalism and realism, and often would intertwine both in his works, as such: "This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take of f your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body." Children Nigel Cholmeley-Jones and Jeanette Cholmeley-Jones with poet Walt Whitman. The children were the niece and nephew of Jeannette Gilder, editor of The Critic and a friend to both Cox (the photographer) and Whitman. Gilder had delivered the frail poet to the photographer’s studio. He had just given a lecture on Abraham Lincoln. Best known for Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman was a man of his times: complex, active, and with an interesting view of life. This photo was taken 5 years before he died. In a newly discovered letter from Whitman to Gilder, he wrote: 328 Mickle Street Camden New Jersey Sept. 13 Evn’g Cox’s photos: came today & I have written my name on them & sent them back (addressing the package to William Carey, Century office)—All are good, but the one I like best is a head with hat on, the photo marked No 3—the pictures with the children come out first-rate—Give my love to the dear girl & boy & tell them I remember them well—I am here like an old hulk driven up on the sand or floating with spars & rigging all gone, & no more voyaging—Love to Watson and Joe Walt Whitman You can see other photos from this same sitting by clicking on his name in the upper right. Whitman never published the “Live Oak, with Moss” poems as he had written them in his notebook, and they still raise questions today.
Make a study of poetry compelling and relevant to your students’ lives. In the film Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams famously delivers portions of Walt Whitman’s beloved “O Captain! My Captain!” poem. This funeral dirge serves as a compelling extended metaphor for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln just days after the end of the Civil War. Use this 30-minute lesson to pull your students into this classic Walt Whitman text. This product includes: A suggested lesson procedure page (1-page) A single-sheet featuring the full-text public domain poem (1-page) A five-question worksheet that will require students to dig into the text (1-page) A detailed answer key to allow ease of grading and provide discussion starters (1-page) This 30-minute lesson will add rigor to your students’ enjoyment of Dead Poets Society, but also works as a standalone assignment for any poetry or American literature unit if, like me, you aren’t able to use the full-length film with your classes. Either way, your students will be challenged and entertained as they work through the words of Walt Whitman. This item downloads as a PDF and includes Google Drive versions of the student handouts. Want another lesson to connect to Dead Poets Society? Click HERE for a two-day poetry analysis and non-fiction media literacy lesson on Walt Whitman’s “O Me! O Life!” Click HERE for a 45-minute lesson on Robert Herrick’s poem that begs teens to “gather ye rosebuds while ye may...” Click HERE for a bundle of these three lessons at a 20% discount!
