Unfortunately, we have been experiencing many issues with our very OLD kiln. I had a few classes left that did not get a chance to use the ceramic glaze and I didn't want to use the kiln anymore than I already had to. I decided to try painting them with a watercolor resist method. The students LOVE Crayola construction paper crayons because they are really bright like chalk (without the mess) so I had them color their tiles first and paint watercolor paint on top! They look fabulous! Parents: I told the students it would be a nice touch to spray them at home with a protective glossy varnish spray to bring out the color and give it a layer of protection!

You need: two sheets of white drawing paper sandpaper tempera paint in blue, green and white brush coloured paper brown paper (grocery bag) glue blue paper A1 size Spray paint stripes in blue, green and white on a saucer. Lay a sheet of white drawing paper before you, with the small size up. Paint it with coloured waves. Don't mix the colours on the saucer, but dip the brush in two or three colours. Leave the sheet to dry. Take the second white sheet and lay it before you with the small side up. Cut a piece of sandpaper as wide as the sheet and 8 cm high. Paste the sandpaper on the bottom of the sheet. Tear the painted sheet in wavy strips. Tear the straight sides of the first and last strip too, so that all strips have two wavy sides. Place the strips overlapping on the white sheet. Start below. Place the second strip partly under the first one, the third under the second etc. Paste down the short sides of the waves on the left and right. Cut boats out of a brown paper bag; bigger ones below, smaller ones at the top (perspective). Cut masts out of the paper bag and sails out of coloured paper. Paste the boats between the waves and paste the long sides of the waves at the same time. Paste sails and masts on the boats. Paste or staple all works together on large blue sheets (A1 size) to create a beautiful group work. Artworks made by students of grade 4

Hey, y'all! This blog post is brought to you by my (and my students!) newfavorite things: * Bingo Dotters (Daubers?) filled with India ink * Bleeding Tissue Paper * Sargent Paint Sticks We had a blast with this lesson. So much so that when I shared on my Instagram, I got lots of questions. I thought I'd create a short video tutorial for your and your kiddos! Here you go: Please pardon my nasally voice as I'm currently losing a fight with a head cold. I blame the children. I have 30 minute art classes with my wee-ones. We managed to crank these out even after watching a video about Britto and reviewing lines, shapes and patterns. I was so loving the direction they were going so far. The following art class, we learned all about bleeding tissue paper magic. This had the kids very excited. I encouraged them to use either warm or cold colors in each section. Some did and some didn't. It's first grade, y'all. They do what they want. These hearts are HUGE. We created them on 18" squares. So, by the third art class, some had a little bit more tissue-papering to do and some did not. So I introduced the idea of the paint sticks. I really let the kids do what they wanted in the background...it was a new medium for them and I really wanted to see what they would come up with. By our fourth and final 30 minute art class, I still had some kids wrapping up their masterpieces. My early finishers set to work with their paint makers. They added pattern to GIANT hearts that I drew on multi colored bulletin board paper. I hot glued their giant hearts together and added them to our heart display! Ugh, still need to get some signage up there! Such a fun lesson, I had to share! Have fun!
