Interpreting food webs can be overwhelming for many students. Over the years, I found a few strategies that work well with students needing extra assistance and I’d love to share them with you! Now it’s no secret that food webs is one of my favorite science topics, so I have A LOT of strategies and ... Read more
Hey Teacher Friends, Right now I’m in the process of creating a series of STEM projects for students who are studying Earth Science.. The current unit I’m focusing on is all about ecosystems and food webs! This project is SO much fun! A STEM group (4-5 students) must first decide on which type of ecosystem

Final product wise, this might just have been my FAVORITE project this past school year. I am so unbelievably proud of the work these 5th graders did on these! I found this project here via Pinterest. Thanks a faithful attempt! I Can Statements: I Can talk about stylized art I Can use the Library resource A-Z Animals Encyclopedia to research a food chain that includes 3 or more animals I Can show a food chain mouth-in-mouth using stylized images of plants and animals Day 1: Students came in with this image on the screen... I asked them to figure out what they all had in common, eventually they ended up describing stylized without even knowing it (I love when that happens!) and I revealed the vocabulary of stylized. To better explain I showed them this awesome graphic I put together in lucidpress.... After a bit more discussion we had a "quiz" where I put up an image and they had to guess stylized or realistic. They did perfect. Then I showed them our inspiration image... They just wrapped up a science unit about ecosystems and food chains so it was the perfect project to connect to the classroom. After explaining the I Cans and the how to do the research and navigate the site they were using for research, they grabbed laptops and got to work filling out the packet below. There was quite a bit of sketching involved but it really seemed to help them understand how to break down their animals and plants. Day 2: After I approved their sketches they got to work! They had an option to draw and color with colored pencil or to collage with paper. We took about 4 class periods total on this, 1 for intro and research, and the rest were workdays. Next time I will probably have them writing something to go along with them when they are displayed. I just can't contain how happy these make me!

Are you looking to decorate your classroom with fun, hand-drawn anchor charts/posters? Do you find it difficult to find the time to create, draw, outline and color? Don't fret. Give me the markers. Hi, I'm the Chart Lady! I love making engaging, eye catching and educational anchor charts. I also can draw/create any other topic you would like, just contact me directly and ask! My students absolutely love these posters and we use them daily. Many students are visual learners, so the colorful images really help them connect, recall and digest what we have learned. I call this anchor chart: "Producers/Consumers/Decomposers" Students were learning the beginnings of Food Webs, in particular examples of producers, consumers and decomposers. **All non-laminated anchor charts are currently hand drawn and colored on 25x30, anchor chart paper. Once ordered, it will take a 2-3 days to draw, outline, color and ship. If you would like it laminated, it will cost $5.00 more for lamination and the size will shrink by 2-3 inches of width. I ship these out ASAP after being ordered and completed, however, keep in mind that once shipped, it is out of my control. Therefore, if shipping does not meet your expectations, I encourage customers to reach out to me first, and we can work something out to make up for anything that might have occurred that was outside of our control.** Enjoy, The Chart Lady

It's already Friday again! The hours are long, but the days are short! It's time to link up with Casey from DoodleBugs again for a little Five for Friday! This week kinda flew by for me. The twins had dentist appointments on Monday. I don't know about y'all, but when I was growing up, the dentist office was not a bright, cheery, colorful place with a tv above my chair, sunglasses so I didn't get blinded by the light, nor were there hygienists that explained everything and made sure I wasn't scared! Here's my big kids loving the dentist! This week we talked a lot about food webs. Today we did the most fun food web simulation! I cut out about a cajillion (what?....That's a number...Don't judge me!) green squares that was grass. Then, I assigned about 13 of my kids to be grasshoppers, 4 to be shrews, and 2 to be hawks. The grasshoppers began the game by collecting as much food for energy as they could. Grasshoppers gathering food. About 10 seconds later, the shrews entered and started eating the grasshoppers. The grasshoppers had to pass their energy (green squares) to the shrews, and then exit the game. Energy being passed from a grasshopper to the shrew. 10 seconds later, the hawks entered and started eating shrews and grasshoppers. The energy consumed (green squares) by the grasshoppers and shrews were passed to the hawks if they were eaten. Hawks, shrews and grasshoppers Food Web Activity Then I stopped the game and we saw the results of how the food web had been carried out! Each time we played, both hawks survived, a couple of shrews, and maybe one grasshopper. It was a great, kinesthetic simulation that I am sure the kids won't forget and we solidified that concept! I live in Texas, and our state flower is the bluebonnet. Every March, for about a month, we get the most beautiful bluebonnets and everyone takes pictures in them. It's a Texas tradition. I've done it every year since the twins were born! Here's our pictures for this year! One of my favorite things about my school is our Character Houses. We have six character houses: honesty, kindness, respect, perseverance, empathy and responsibility. Each student is assigned a character house in Kindergarten (or whenever they move to our school) and they stay the same one until they are finished with 4th grade and move to middle school. All of the houses are mixed within the grade levels, so every class has a handful of each character trait. The kids can earn tickets for their house by being caught using our character traits. At the end of every week, we tally up how many tickets each house earned, and the winning house gets to spin our big wheel to see what kind of prize they earned. Then, at the end of the six weeks, we figure out which house had the most points by each teacher entering their points onto the Google Drive spreadsheet, and they earn a fun party! All of the kids and teachers have their character house shirts, and we wear them on Fridays! Our awesome PTA has even painted our character houses in the hallway! They are on little life saver rafts because our school is right by the lake. So cute! Last week we had a day where you were supposed to wear as much of your color as you could. Here is our AP! Isn't she a sport! She was outside after school doing car duty! We also just finished up our Alamo unit. We did a novel study in Social Studies over a book titled "Journey to the Alamo" written by Melody A. Cuate. It's a fictional piece where three kids journey back in time to the Alamo right as the Texians are about to battle Santa Anna and the Mexican Army. My kids were GLUED to this book! You can get it by clicking on the picture below. I had the kids do several activities with the book, but this one was my favorite. The kids each chose their favorite person from the Alamo and researched facts about his/her person. Then, they created their person with construction paper and put the facts inside! Didn't they turn out precious?! That's my Five for Friday! Thanks for stopping by!

we made this in science last quarter. i just took it down, so i made sure to take a picture of it first. we talked all about food chains and webs and consumers/producers.. and the kids got to link together which consumers would eat which producers. (thats what all the string is for) =)
BIG Science Stations Units are awesome for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. Allow your students to learn and explore concepts in fun and different ways.
You need an easy but fun and educational tool for teaching about ecosystems. I've got just the resource you need! This craftivity comes with a reading comprehension passage to help your students explore ecosystems, as well as to practice main ideas with supporting details. If your district is like mine, then there are some gaps in the science curriculum. I am expected to teach students about food chains and food webs without teaching anything about ecosystems and biomes. That’s when I decided to create this accordion-style craftivity booklet. I wanted it to be brief but still provide students with an understanding of this important concept that's foundational to other science concepts. File Type PDF (Acrobat) Document File Be sure that you have an application to open this file type before downloading and/or purchasing.
I tried out a new STEAM lesson that combined learning about food chains while making art. I introduced this lesson with a Prezi: http://prezi.com/pim43kss-493/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share We used national geographic magazines to find pictures of animals to help create our collage. The students pre planned everything out in their sketchbooks before starting on their food chain collage. Here are a few examples of our final projects! I love how they turned out and the creativit
I have been noticing that there are a BUNCH of standards for a variety of grade levels that have to do with ecosystems, food chains, environment and habitat.
As part of our unit on plant and animal adaptations, the kiddos needed to learn about mimicry. Mimicry is when a plant or animal has similar features to another species that help it survive. One of the best examples of this is the Monarch and Viceroy butterflies: Long story short, the Monarch butterfly tastes bitter so predators aren't as likely to eat it. The Viceroy butterfly has similar markings to the Monarch, so predators avoid it, too, because they think it will taste bitter like that Monarch. Soooo to demonstrate this concept for the kiddos, I created the following experiment. I started by filling cups with different types of soda. Cup A was filled about half way with Sprite: Cup B was filled about half way with Seltzer water: Cup C was filled half way with more Seltzer water and Cup D was filled half way with Diet Coke (any dark soda would work): I started by giving each student one Cup A and one Cup B. They worked in groups to record observations about each cup. We then listed the following observations on the board. Cup A liquid has gas/bubbles clear Cup B looks the same as Cup A liquid has gas/bubbles clear I then told the students that the cups represented two different butterflies and that they were going to pretend to be a predator that wants to eat the butterflies. They were then allowed to "eat" butterfly A (the Sprite). I asked them how butterfly tasted and they all agreed that it was good! They then predicted that butterfly B (the Seltzer water) would taste good, too, because it looked just like butterfly A. They were allowed to taste it..... ...and all began yelling "EWWWW THAT'S NASTY!!!!!!" and "THAT MADE ME SICK, MISS HUNT!!" Next we discussed the difference between looking the same and tasting the same. The students quickly made the connection that the Sprite mimicked the Seltzer water like the Viceroy mimics the Monarch. I then took the experiment one step farther. I showed them Cup C (Seltzer water) and Cup D (Diet Coke). I told them that it was the next day and they were hungry and looking for a meal again. I held up the cups and told them that they saw two butterflies go by...one that looked the same as the two that ate yesterday and one that looked completely different. I asked them if they would take a chance on the clear "butterfly" knowing that there was a 50% chance it would be a nasty one or if they would choose the brown "butterfly". All but one kiddo yelled "THE BROWN ONE". My one defiant little guy said "Well I would still take the clear one 'cause I bet it would be the good tastin' one." I handed him the clear cup and let him taste that it was the Seltzer water again. He changed his mind in a heartbeat and said "I WAS WRONG! I WANT THE BROWN ONE!!!" All in all, the experiment was a huge success! The students were talking about mimicry for the rest of the day! ~Miss Hunt
Here are 7 great ideas to teach ecosystems, food webs, and food chains to your students.
This food web activity is a great way to visually show kids how interconnected life on this planet is.
Essential Question: What roles do organisms play in an ecosystem and how does energy flow throughout each ecosystem? Learning Target: I can build a model of a food chain or a food web given a scenario in order to demonstrate how energy flows from one organism to another. The resource includes a rubric for the project, checklist for students, the cut-outs for 4 different food chain biomes with the option to make 3 of those biomes into food webs biomes (For a challenge group), and well thought out scenarios for each biome that will guide students in building their models. There are other project photo images attached in case you don't have materials for a 3d model. A guided introduction to this project is broken down with this google slide. It includes Pre-activities to prepare students, roles, materials list, and a procedure. Students begin by practicing building a food chain and food web given a scenario.
