This includes a couple of options for review. For preschool, we talked about doing what God wants. That includes taking care of their bodies. Our Bible study today is found in the Old Testament Book of Daniel. A new king came to Jerusalem and took over the city. He was King Nebuchadnezzar, the King of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar told his man in charge to bring some of the young men that were from Jerusalem to Babylon for 3 years of training. The young men had to be able to learn the language and be quick to understand new things. They had to be good-looking and smart. After the training, they would serve the king. Some of the young men were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Their names were changed to: Daniel=Belteshazzar (but he is still called Daniel all through the book), Hananiah=Shadrach, Mishael=Meshach, Azariah=Abed-Nego Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego were given some of the king’s delicacies to eat and wine to drink. Daniel didn’t want to eat that kind of food. Daniel asked for vegetables to eat and water to drink for 10 days instead. Daniel asked the man in charge if he would look at them after the 10 days to see how they looked compared to the other young men after eating the vegetables. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were healthier than the other young men that ate the king’s provisions. Of course, they looked better, so the king’s man gave everyone the vegetables to eat instead. God was with Daniel and his friends, and they were given wisdom. God gave Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego ‘knowledge and skill in all literature”. God gave Daniel the ability to understand people’s visions and dreams. When Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego were taken before King Nebuchadnezzar, he questioned them and “none were found” like them! They were chosen to serve the king. When the king questioned them, they were ten times better than the king’s men in all areas of wisdom and understanding! They were faithful to God and God was with them. We used the plates and stickers below and the foldable booklet. This is a simple print, fold and use and great for review. It includes color and black & white. Click here to download. Scripture is Daniel 1. For this week's review project, I purchased color paper plates and these vegetable stickers at my local teacher's supply store. I also found these food stickers. I drew a slanted line on the plate. They put their vegetable stickers on the paper plate and we talked about the foods Daniel and his friends ate. Then, we gave them the food stickers and they had to decide if it was a vegetable. The vegetables could go with the other stickers, but the assorted food stickers were on the other side of the plate. We discussed different foods and taking care of our bodies. Simple and they love stickers! We also took some vegetables and bottled water as part of the lesson. My oldest son, Jake, taught Family Home Evening a couple of weeks ago. It all started with a simple experiment. I told Jake that if I poured oil on water it would float on top of the water. Then we went for the food coloring. Then it turned into a discussion, mostly his idea, that ended up being our lesson for FHE. He presented it all by himself. Here is how it went..... The water in the jar represents THE WORLD (meaning the things of this world, pride, basically the things that are not of the Lord). The Oil in the jar represents US. 1 John 2: 15-17: Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. Romans 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. *What does "of the world" mean? *What can we do to "present [our] bodies a living sacrifice" to the Lord?" The food coloring (which was supposed to be red...but we were out) represents THE SINS OF THE WORLD. The oil repels the coloring and it passes straight through in droplets and then colors the water. The kids LOVED that part! It is pretty fun to watch! (Stir all together) Sometimes we sin and we become like the "world". Then we need to repent. (while everything starts to seperate again we read the scriptures below) John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his eonly begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting ilife. Isaiah 1:18: Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. (When it is all settled) Doctrine & Covenants 63:47: He that is faithful and endureth shall overcome the world. (Shine a Flashlight behind the jar. The lights won't cut through the bottom part but really lights up the oil.) Matthew 5:14: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. *How can we let our light shine so that it cannot be hid? 1 John 4:1-11: Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Hey, friends! I'm coming to you today with my very favorite fiber arts projects! Teaching fiber arts is one of my very favorite things to teach, along with clay. This summer and fall, I put in HOURS creating THIS BOOK which will be due out this coming summer: You can preorder yourself a copy here if you are interested! But if you just can't wait, I thought I'd share some of my very favorite fibers projects right here today. Be sure and follow the links to the lessons as nearly all of them have how-to videos that are perfect for you and your students. Let's start with sewing! 1. These GIANT pizza pillows were such a hit last year with my students that I knew I had to do it again. Because I was wrapping my fibers book this past fall, I decided to kick off the school year with fibers. Usually, I'm all about fiber projects in the spring. This is how we displayed the pillows at last year's art show! This year, we also made both emoji and donut pillows (size: HUGE) but for details on those, you'll have to scoop up my book. 2. If you are looking for a beginner sewing project on a smaller scale, you might wanna try these stitched monsters on for size. My kids used Smart Fab fabric for the bodies but felt would work just fine. If you are curious what types of needles and thread I recommend, be sure and check out this blog post as well as the others where I break it down for you. 3. I learned embroidery from my grandma when I was in elementary school and I LOVED it. It felt so good to learn something so "adult" in my mind: creating a picture with needle and thread. I love sharing this experience with my students now too. You can read all about this Our School Has Heart fiber art's experience right here. This year, I decided to live dangerously and introduce embroidery to my second graders at the start of the school year...when they are still first graders, really. It was a bumpy start but they got it and loved it. This lesson can be found in my book but I did create this video a while back to help you troubleshoot stitching with kids: Actually, the above video was created for AOE during one of their online conferences! This is a couple years old but does walk you thru a lot of important details of all things fiber arts and kids. And here is my troubleshooting embroidery with kiddos video. I hope you find them helpful! 4. For even MORE details on sewing and embroidery, along with a book I strongly recommend, visit here! 5. Needle felting with kiddos is not something I do very often...but I do enjoy doing it! If you attempt needle felting with children, I'd make certain it's with a group of kids that understand the dangers of the needle felting tool and are responsible enough to handle it. As y'all know, I LOVE needle felting and have put in countless hours stabbing stuff. If you are interested in learning more about needle felting, start here. 6. One of the most popular lessons on this blog has been my string art lesson. This is based on a project I did in 5th grade and LOVED. My students have loved it just as much. I've created videos to walk you and your kids through this lesson so be sure and check out this blog post AND this blog post! 7. Paper weaving is a must when you introduce weaving to your students. But what to do with the paper weaving when finished? Last year, we made these woven owls and the kids loved them! Both this blog post and the one mentioned above have A TON of videos on teaching first graders (and up!) how to make a paper loom and weave. 8. Circle Loom Weaving has always been a huge hit! I normally do with my second graders in the spring but this year, I did it with third grade in the fall. I can't tell you how many videos I have on this! Be sure and check this blog post out if you have any questions about getting started. 9. Have you ever tried CD or Embroidery Hoop weaving? So fun and easy! Last year, my second graders tackled CD weaving instead of plate weaving. It was a great way to upcycle those stacks of CD's I'd been accumulating. This type of weaving takes less time than plate weaving as you don't have to spend two art classes painting the plates. They also look super pretty in the window when light hits the CD. Video and lesson details here! 10. Whenever I get stumped for a lesson, I just think back to the things I enjoyed creating as a kid. I remember the summer I spent at a vacation bible school learning straw weaving. So fun! My kids love this one too. Details and video here! 11. Want a lesson that packs a huge punch? Tree weaving teaches landscape painting, weaving and so much more! This lesson of mine has been another huge hit on my blog. I have many videos to walk you and your kids through this fun technique. You can find it here. 12. I have yet to meet a kid who didn't love making Ojos de Dios. Why not try expanding on that love by making BIG God's eyes?! We did that here! 13. Pouch Weaving used to be one of my all time favorite things to teach. Because it is complex, I created an entire series of weaving videos for you and your students, including how to create that cool cord. You can find the beginning of the series here. 14. Got yarn? Then you and your kiddos can yarn bomb! What a great activity for your early finishers too. 15. Shibori! I love shibori dying and so do my students. I created a video that explains EVERY one of these folding techniques and you can see it here. So, truth be told: I've been blogging for seven years and teaching for twenty. Today we went into school to do a SEALS assembly about 'getting on and falling out'. We decided to focus on the story of Saul and David in the cave, where David chooses not to kill Saul, but just to cut off a piece of his cloak to prove what he could have done but chose not to. We then talked to the children about what it's like when people upset us and we get angry and want to fight back. This is the illustration we used... You will need two jars or bottles with lids, white vinegar, water and bicarbonate of soda. Put neat vinegar in one jar and a mix of vinegar and water in another jar Talk about what it is like when people make you angry. Add half a teaspoon of bicarb to the water/ vinegar jar. The mixture will fizz a little but nothing more. Put a lid on the jar. Next, put a spoonful of bicarb in the vinegar jar and add another spoonful as well. The mixture will fizz up and explode out of the jar (best to keep the jars on a tray to collect the fizzy liquid! Explain that the second jar shows what happens when someone makes us angry and we fight back, adding more to the mix until the situation explodes out of control. David chose not to do this at this point in the story. He chose to be a better person than Saul, to do the clever thing and the thing that Jesus tells us to do- to turn the other cheek. He didn't fight back against Saul and kill him, instead he chose to try and keep a lid on the situation by doing the right thing. He could have easily turned to violence but he made a choice not to and in our relationships we have to make similar choices. We finished with a testimony about how God had given one of us strength not to fight back and then helped the children to reflect on how they could be strong in similar situations.
