UPDATE: It's just been pointed out how similar this post is to Murana Chicken Farm's. Check it out! They offer a number of ideas I did not. If you have any pets or farm animals, you've probably thrown away a ton of feed bags. Each time you've done this, maybe you've wondered: Is there something better I could do with this? Well in fact, there is! Feed sacks are made from wonderfully durable material and with just a little imagination, you can turn them into all kinds of useful and fun things. Here are some ideas: 1. Nail feed bags to the walls of your chicken coop (or garden shed, or stall, etc.) to help give added warmth during the winter. 2. Use a sack as a container for muddy/sandy clothes or shoes. 3. Cut open a bag or two and lay them flat in a car trunk, to help keep the floor clean. 4. Sew a bag or two into a tote bag perfect for groceries. Or a messenger bag. 5. Sew a feed bag into an apron. 6. Use feed sacks as a grow bag. This might work for potatoes and tomatoes, as I often see online, but I think they'd be even better for herbs, greens, radishes, carrots, and similar crops. 7. Use empty bags in place of landscape fabric, between garden rows. Pull them up every year, however, or you'll end up with bits and pieces of plastic all over your yard. Outdoor cushions, via ThriftyFun. 8. Use bags as garden totes for hauling weeds, cuttings, compost, etc. 9. Use empty sacks to store manure you'll later use in the garden. 10. Use feed bags as trash bags. 11. Place donated clothes and household items inside empty bags (instead of wasting garbage bags). 12. Cut bags open and use as shelf liners in the garden shed or garage. 13. Cut sacks open and let your kids use them as sleds. 14. Turn old feed sacks into farmhouse decor Christmas stockings. 15. Sew feed bags into outdoor cushions. Talk about low maintenance! 16. Turn empty bags into a tarp. Feed bag apron, via Scoop from the Coop. 17. Sew sacks into a tablecloth. This would be perfect for garden stands, the farmer's market, a picnic, or even just as a table covering for kids to do messy crafts upon. 18. Sew a sack into a zippered pouch. Really, you could use almost any purse, pouch, or bag pattern. 19. Turn an empty feed bag into a bib. 20. Make easy wall decor. 21. Turn a feed sack into a clothespin bag. 22. Make a pillow. This would be cute for the porch! 23. Sew some feed bags up into a dress?! Feed sack grow bag, via Linn Acres Farm.

This is kind of a crazy post (really crazy) but I just thought it would be fun to try to make something out of one of those cat food bags that are so sturdy. Cat food, dog food, kitty litter, chicken feed, etc. are now coming in bags that aren't just paper. Some of them are sort of a webbed type plastic and they are very strong. So just for grins, I made a reusable grocery bag from a Purina cat food bag. Here's what I started with... First, turn it inside out and sew across the bottom. I tried serging it also but my serger didn't like sewing on the plastic so I gave up that idea. By the way, the reason I had to sew across the bottom was because the cat food bag wasn't sealed at the bottom. It was simply folded up several times and taped. Next, fold the bag so that you can sew triangles on the lower corners. This will make a box-type bottom for your bag. Now sew straight across to form your triangle. When you're done with that, cut off the excess bag in the corner. Turn your bag right side out. You can see how it is beginning to shape up compared to my purchased bag. Obviously, it's a bit too tall so we'll have to cut it down a bit. Now, take the piece that you cut off the top and cut that in half. We're going to use one of the halves to make our handles. Now take one of these strips and fold the raw edges together, overlap them in the middle, and sew a zig zag stitch all the way around. You should come out with a circle strip that you can cut in half so that you will have two straps. Take the body of your bag, turn down the top edge about an inch and sew a zig zag stitch all the way around. Now all that's left is to attach the straps. Done! Now you might not think it's too pretty but hey, it's absolutely free! And these bags are made to carry a heavy load. They are kind of stiff so they are easier to fill at the store than some of the fabric bags that are so limp. Also, they are waterproof so they'd be great to keep in the car for beach trips, etc. No need to worry about keeping them nice. When they've served their purpose or get wrecked you can just throw them into your recycling. I know - you're wondering why you didn't think of it!

I have got to know Anna Graham of Noodlehead through Ringo Pie and she is the nicest person and the most generous blogger. She doesn't know about this post so when she reads it, I'm guessing she will blush, but I love her patterns and I love her blogging. She gives a lot of herself and I admire that. The majority of her patterns are available free on her website and she is always adding more. This is my version of her 241 Tote Bag, available to buy by PDF My day bag which I take to work full of keys, money, tissues, granola bars, bananas and a water bottle is wearing thin so I spent a few evenings this week making this one. The storage possibilities appealed to me. I made the outer zipper pocket horizontal for my phone and added some batting to protect it. Inside, I put in a key fob clip, I live in fear of losing my house keys or the ones to my work place so I always add a key fob to any bag I make. Recognise the lining? From my lucky win on Kat's blog , I have linked in to her great news that she has a pattern in a new Zakka Style book full of designers and cute looking makes. Congrats Kat! I just know that flash of pink and the little deer will make me smile as I reach for my phone. I recycle fixings when I make bags- the strap, key fob clasp and the zipper were from some cheapo charity shop finds. I have no idea where to find zips with bigger tabs, I can only source dress style zips- if you know of a good supply, please let me know! The strap allows it to be shoulder or messenger style across the body. It is all sprayed with protector- seems to work well, I've tried it before, and ready to go. Thankyou Anna, the pattern worked a like a dream x Here's a mini tute on how to do a key fob dangly thing- it is very easy!
