The Grade 2, Unit 1: Healthy Eating packet is designed to meet the specific expectations outlined in the 2018 edition of the Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document. Please note that this packet has been updated as of 02/09/19 and reflects the updated Canada's Food Guide. Changes Made: To reflect the updated version of Canada's Food Guide, this packet makes no mention of food groups. Instead, the focus is on establishing healthy eating routines and patterns, and making healthy and informed decisions when it comes to foods. Students are encouraged to include a plant-based diet into their food choices, and much focus is placed on making food choices in relation to the advice provided in Canada's Food Guide. About the Packet: This packet introduces students to the information contained within the 2019 edition of Canada’s Food Guide. Through this unit, students explore the nutritional value of foods based on the food guide, and identify what can be done to make meals healthier for our bodies. Students also explore what a healthy food choice is and why it is important to make healthy food choices. Students begin to compare their food choices with the suggestions identified in Canada’s Food Guide. The final portion of this packet has students focus on choosing healthy snacks, and identifying reasons why choosing healthy snacks is important. Concepts Addressed: This packet addresses the following concepts: How to use Canada's Food Guide when making food choices. The layout of Canada's Food Guide. How to make healthy food choices. The difference between healthy food choices and sometimes food choices. Lessons Included in Packet: This packet is designed to supplement your Healthy Eating unit. As such, it includes 7 full-length lesson plans. The lessons that are included are as follows: Lesson 1.1: Introducing the Unit Lesson 1.2: Exploring the New Food Guide Lesson 1.3: Food Guide Suggestions Lesson 1.4: Nutritional Value Lesson 1.5: Healthy Snacks Lesson 1.6: Making Food Choices Lesson 1.7: Healthy Eating and the Body Each lesson includes a full-length, printable lesson plan that has materials that are ready to be used immediately. Each lesson also includes a description of lesson learning goals and success criteria that can be used to judge student success at the end of the lesson. Please note that there is only 1 reading included in this packet. There are reflections and minds-on activities that get students thinking about what it means to eat healthy and how to make healthy food choices. Answer Keys: Please note that there are few answer keys provided in this packet. Student responses are based on the information they have researched, and any information needed for the responses can be found in readings and on supplemental websites. This very informative set of 40 different fruit and vegetables on trees, bushes, plants, vines (you name it!) is a fantastic resource to introduce children to how and where the food we eat grows. Children will learn to identify a variety of fruits & vegetables, learn how to differentiate them to sort them in different stacks (you’ll be amazed at how many items end up in the fruit pile which you would have sworn was a vegetable!) The front of these sturdy hard-to-bend learning cards has the food in its natural state and surroundings depending on where it grows – on a tree, on a vine on the ground, on a tall shrub, on a bush, on a plant and so on. Reverse of the learning card tells you what you see in the image on the front, where it grows and also some really interesting lesser-known facts about the fruit or vegetable. Freebies included: Magnetic-close Gift Box / Storage Box A 40-page physical Play Guide with creative play ideas and suggestions to help make the most of your Learning Sets You can also add a set of 40x Adhesive Magnets for £5 to use the learning cards on magnetic surfaces such as whiteboards, blackboards or even on the fridge for a more immersive learning experience for children be it indoors or outdoors. This accessible, informative book will help teachers, parents, and practitioners make sense of current issues and controversies surrounding childhood disabilities. Childhood Psychological Disorders: Current Controversies was compiled to disentangle controversial issues, contributing to a fuller understanding of the needs of children with disabilities and the families raising them. The book focuses on emotional, social, and behavioral concerns such as the psychological dimensions of childhood disability. Specific, topical essays highlight the current state of knowledge and the nature of opposing arguments among specialists in various disciplines. The book opens with a consideration of the historical and social context of child disability, addressing the evolution of disability concepts and the changing nature of disability as a social/cultural phenomenon. Disability's impact on the family system and schools is explored, too, from the vantage point of educators, children, and their parents and siblings. Subsequent chapters examine such diagnoses as pediatric bipolar disorder, autism, the educational label Emotionally Handicapped/Disturbed (EH/D), food allergies and related disorders, and Gender Identity Disorder (GID).
"Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away ere break of day, To find our long-forgotten gold" I am so thrilled to share the first set in a series of Family Learning Literature Guides that I am creating. As a busy mom of three I understand how challenging it is to teach to multiple age groups and learning styles. This year as I have homeschooled, I have introduced an approach that brings together learning experiences based upon a common theme. This Unit, inspired by The Hobbit, is a one month long curriculum that brings together Language Arts, Handwork, Art Lessons, Nature study, Geography and exciting hands on projects that will breathe fresh air and magic into your home schooling experience. My desire is that each family completes their month long journey with a love of the characters, props and toys, bellies full of hobbity dishes and a new thirst for Adventure and learning. The target age is 8-11, but suggestions for each day will be included to tailor the experience towards families who have younger or older children (or both!). This set is ready to print and use immediately after purchase! 95 pages *This is a print at home item that also includes membership to a private facebook group* Reviews: "We purchased the print version of the Hobbit learning guide and it has been so much fun to use with my kids! My husband and I are huge Tolkien fans and when I saw that HearthMagic had put this guide out, I knew we would use it to help bring the love of Middle Earth to our 5 kids. It hasn't disappointed. There is so much in the guide that wonderfully builds on each chapter of The Hobbit, from recipes to go with the wonderful food descriptions in the book, to craft projects (wool felting spiders!), art projects, games, and so much more. Great resource!" "My family thoroughly enjoyed the Hobbit set! I homeschool my daughters, ages 8, 7, and 3. They are on the younger end of the scale, and I actually had not planned to read The Hobbit with them yet. However, with this guide, we really enjoyed wandering through the world of Bilbo and his adventures. The guide is well-organized and varied in its suggestions for activities and extensions. There is inspiration and information and recipes. I think we will pull it out again next year because we didn't even get to all of the activities and as any fan of The Hobbit knows, you can't just read it once! My family is looking forward to more literature-based guides by Amber! " LOVE this study!!! I honestly cannot say enough how happy I am with this purchase. We are only on Chapter two and we are having such fun together. So highly recommended. Thank you!
