My guest today breathes new life into what fishing, specifically fly fishing, has to teach anglers and non-anglers alike, while also giving us a look inside the skill, […]

He immediately fell in love with the unbridled beauty of the Arctic regions. Hans’ greatest outdoor experience was in 1975 when he spent almost four months in the wilderness of Lapland, where he learned how to survive in the forest and on the tundra. Hans began flytying in 1976. By the early 1980s, he was creating his own designs, mostly parachutes. This eventually led to his development of several unusual patterns and tying techniques. His international fame increased as he continued his meticulous development of his flies, giving demonstrations, workshops and classes around the world. Armed with his backpack, rod and flytying material, he and his future wife Ina travelled round Scandinavia as far north as Svalbard and later Europe and North America, fishing their way around. It was in the large variety of the river systems and lakes of Scandinavia and Finland that he honed his flyfishing skills. Hans’ retirement now makes it possible to commit fully to the world of flyfishing and related environmental issues. He has finally found the time to write his long-awaited first book which sheds light on his ground-breaking thinking behind the world famous Klinkhåmer fly and variations. Throughout his life he has held free-of-charge educational programmes and flytying lessons for youngsters, something he sees as his way of giving back to society.

Since its publication in 1983, THE RIVER WHY has become a classic. David James Duncan's sweeping novel is a coming-of-age comedy about love, nature, and the quest for self-discovery, written in a voice as distinct and powerful as any in American letters. Gus Orviston is a young fly fisherman who leaves behind his comically schizoid family to find his own path. Taking refuge in a remote cabin, he sets out in pursuit of the Pacific Northwest's elusive steelhead. But what begins as a physical quarry becomes a spiritual one as his quest for self-knowledge batters him with unforeseeable experiences.

A decade ago, farmed Atlantic salmon replaced tuna as the most popular fish on North America's dinner tables. We are told salmon is healthy and environmentally friendly. The reality is disturbingly different. In Salmon Wars, investigative journalists Douglas Frantz and Catherine Collins bring readers to massive ocean feedlots where millions of salmon are crammed into parasite-plagued cages and fed a chemical-laced diet. The authors reveal the conditions inside hatcheries, where young salmon are treated like garbage, and at the farms that threaten our fragile coasts. They draw colorful portraits of characters, such as the big salmon farmer who poisoned his own backyard, the fly-fishing activist who risked everything to ban salmon farms in Puget Sound, and the American researcher driven out of Norway for raising the alarm about dangerous contaminants in the fish. Frantz and Collins document how the industrialization of Atlantic salmon threatens this keystone species, endangers our health and environment, and lines the pockets of our generation's version of Big Tobacco. And they show how it doesn't need to be this way. Just as Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation forced a reckoning with the Big Mac, the vivid stories, scientific research, and high-stakes finance at the heart of Salmon Wars will inspire readers to make choices that protect our health and our planet.

Author Biography Ray Hyman (BA, MA, Ed.M) fell in love with fishing when he was five, and his uncle gave him his first bamboo pole and reel. Ray began fly fishing and fly tying many years ago and took his own notes and kept journals to improve his fly fishing knowledge and skills. After cleaning up his home office, he found his fly fishing notes in the journal he had made over the years. He thought that sharing that information with other people new to the sport could help them enjoy and experience fly fishing as much as he had over the years. Using his knowledge and experience as a teacher, college professor, and fly fisher, Ray has organized his fishing notes over the years into this book for beginners. With his love for watercolor painting, Ray also recreated his own sketches to enhance the text for visual learners. Ray, and his wife Laura, had been married 39 years and are the proud parents of four grown children. Ray and Laura love to hike America’s National and State Parks and enjoy moments of solitude in the wilderness together. Book Reviews “Forthcoming." — XXXX “Forthcoming" — XXX You Might Also Like
