Prized for its unique foliage and architectural interest, Astilboides tabularis (Common Astilboides) is a vigorous perennial noted for its large, rounded, peltate leaves, 2-3 ft. across (60-90 cm), that resemble lily pads. Borne on long petioles rising from the ground, the superb leaves are adorned with ruffled edges and prominent veins. In late spring, creamy white plumes of Astilbe-like flowers are carried atop gracefully arching stems above the foliage. A bold specimen plant for pond or stream banks or garden areas with consistently moist soils.
The lakes of the Adirondacks were loaded with water lilies, something I am not use to paddling around. I tried for a different perspective by shooting underwater up through the lily pads as the sun rays shined through. ----- July 29th to August 2nd, my brother and I kayaked the first map of the the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Old Forge to Long Lake in the Adirondacks of New York. It was an incredible adventure through a pond, 11 lakes, a boggy marsh and 1 river. We set up primitive camping each night in different locations, Seventh Lake, Raquette Lake, Forked Lake and Raquette River. I used two cameras through the journey, a waterproof point and shoot and my Nikon DSLR. Become a Fan on Facebook! PLEASE NOTE: All Rights are Reserved. It is another quilt inspired by a lake we go to each year that I love. I take a lot of photos when up there and Lily Pads & Cattails is the result of one of them. I am evidentally into a new series because I already have another one planned in my head and will begin to work on it soon. I placed this quilt next to my previous one titled "Refections". It is interesting to see what they have in common as well as their differences.

Deep in their roots, All flowers keep the light. Theodore Roethke Debbie Sperling has many plans for her large property located just outside of Hamilton, Ontario and considers her garden very much to be a work in progress. The three year old pond was one of the first projects that she and her husband tackled. An old swimming pool located just off the back deck was transformed into a large figure eight shaped pond. A japanese style wooden bridge crosses the pond at the narrowest point and links the two sections of the pond. A flagstone path encircles the pond. In this picture Joe Pie weed, rust colored daylilies, Ligularia and assorted grasses are planted just beyond the waters edge. At the far end of the pond, water bubbles to the surface and then cascades down a series of waterfalls. Variegated Weiglia and ground cover evergreens are planted alongside the path that leads to the top of the waterfall. The pond attracts lots of wildlife including hawks and eagles. Here a dragonfly keeps watch over the pond on the curve of a slender reed. The water buckles into ripples as the excited koi scramble for food. A frog surfaces what the fuss is all about. There are many places to sit and view the garden including this quite corner. Though in the early stages of creation, Debbie's garden is already one of the nicest I have seen.
