The last day in Spring Lake Park Schools found me up at Northpoint Elementary. We worked on looking at student data. We then drove down to Spring Lake Park High School. When you walked into the school there is a huge rotunda - it is a big circle space. The rotunda has big window that look out onto the football field. We stopped in to visit the principal's admin assistant, Maria, she let me answer the phone. We then got to go talk to Principal Stevenson. She was really nice. Auntie Jerelyne then said we were going to a coaches meeting, I told her I love sports. But she said it was a different kind of coach. These coaches work with teachers and student learning. They were learning and working on innovation and design thinking. They started making paper airplanes to get their brains going and worked in small groups. I enjoyed my time in Spring Lake Park Schools! When I left I got this great bag with lots of fun things,

So since my mom home schooled (and is still home schooling) my little brother...I remember she did this with him....and at the time our big brother was in Iraq and Hawaii...well that big brother is about to head over to Afghanistan soon...so we might be able to send one to him but I am going to start somewhere else I think... A boy and girl version of Flat Stanley! I'm going to hand color them...because my kids are a little young to color their own yet...Ian really isn't but Ella is! Here is a letter I made up to go with it...I still have to make the journal...but I think it will just be a few pages stapled together folded nicely and ready to mail! And I will keep you all informed as we hear back from HIM!

Now that the kids are back in school, I thought you might be interested in hearing about how we completed our Flat Stanley project at the end of last school year with our nephew, Aidyn (Harris Sister Donna's son). If you are anything like us, you may not have heard of Flat Stanley before. This project is designed to help school children learn about geography. So each child creates a paper "Flat Stanley" and then mails him to a friend or relative who lives in another state (or country), and then good old Stanley lives with them for a while, having adventures in another part of the world. His hosts document what Flat Stanley did and learned while he was there with journals, pictures, etc, and ultimately sends it all back to the student at the conclusion of the project. As it turned out, we had a trip planned to Los Angeles, CA right around the time Flat Stanley arrived so we decided to just take him with us. Here's a look at some of the things Flat Stanley did during his time in LA. First it was a quick plane ride out to California... Then right down to business. First stop was for a treat at Randy's Donuts. Stanley toured the Paramount Film Studios with us. Including a tour of the Dr. Phil show. He was front and center when we found the "Hansel and Gretel" house in Burbank. And I think he might have eaten a berry or two before he saw this sign. Eeek!! He really wanted to visit the beach, so we took him. He made his way to the famous Hollywood sign, of course. And then it was off to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He found all his favorite stars. And when Stanley finished his whirlwind tour of the big city, he did a little souvenir shopping for his friend back home in North Carolina. Good old Stanley did indeed make it back home safe and sound toward the end of the school year, and by all accounts, I'd say it all turned out pretty well. So, if you ever find yourself in possession of a Flat Stanley, take a little helpful advice from me. Just drop him in your purse and take him with you everywhere. I plunked him down everywhere we went and just whipped out the camera for a few shots. Trust me, no one batted an eye, and more often than I could count, people actually knew who Flat Stanley was. As it turns out, he's pretty well traveled. ;)
In my class, we have been doing the Flat Stanley project. Learn about it {here}. We also got some Flat Stanleys sent to us as well! I really wanted to help my students learn about their state through this process. So this week, since we only have 3 days of school, I thought we would do a mini-unit on our little state, Rhode Island. To help my students keep track of their research, I created a worksheet for them to record the information they find. I'm sharing it as a freebie! Click the picture to get it. Then, I thought it would be fun to put all our information into a booklet that they could keep. We'll send some with our Flat Stanleys too. Check it out in my {TpT store} and my {Teachers Notebook Store}. Oh, and speaking of my state, all of RI is on vacation this week except my district. I'm not bitter or anything.
The perfect size for mailing.
