Well, I just don't know what else call it. Seems as though most (if not all) lobster shacks these days are restaurants or places to eat lobster, lobster rolls, lobster salad, lobster hamburgers...and maybe some fried clams. But there was a time when that old shack was a place to store stuff for the lobster fishermen -- like a few traps and pots, rope, buoys, sticks, swivels and an extra bottle of Jack Daniels. This "Maine Lobster Shack" is one of those places. Basically a shed on a pier. So grab ya some foul weather gear and your boots, and let's go pull some traps!

Motif Number 1, located on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, is a replica of a former fishing shack well known to students of art and art history as "the most often-painted building in America." The original structure was built in 1840 and destroyed in the Blizzard of 1978, but an exact replica was constructed that same year. Built in the 1840s as Rockport was becoming home to a colony of artists and settlement of fishermen, the shack became a favorite subject of painters due to the composition and lighting of its location as well as being a symbol of New England maritime life. Painter Lester Hornby (1882–1956) is believed to be the first to call the shack "Motif Number 1," a reference to its being the favorite subject of the town's painters, and the name achieved general acceptance. I felt like I needed a day to clear my head so I cleared my schedule and decided to head up to Rockport and Essex, Massachusetts today. Two days of rain yielded to a sunny morning on land but the stubborn fog held on to the harbor. Rockport is an old fishing village and artist community. This old red fishing shack, purported to be the most painted building in America, has become affectionately known as Motif #1. Paintings and photographs bearing the "Motif #1" title can be found all over town and probably in galleries all over the world. I see them on ebay all the time. This Anthony Thieme oil painting dates to 1938. Although I'm sure locals will roll their eyes, its position at the end of a pier makes it charming from almost every angle. The tall ship "Formidable" was docked at the end of Tuna Wharf and the sun was illuminating the water from behind. The color was amazing. Study in Blue. Does anyone know the shrub? I don't. Steps down to the water. Roy Moore Lobster Co. on Bearskin Neck. I asked the shop if I could take a photo of the inside and they yanked this big boy out for me. Eight pounds! Lunch. (Sorry little guy.) Bearskin Neck cottages. Cottage detail. Can you see the carved face in the beam in the upper left? More cottages. A little afternoon fog bank moving in off the back harbor. A sweet little quiet spot. And a freshly planted window box announces the arrival of our planting season. I have more to show you of Rockport and Essex, Massachusetts but it was a wonderful long day and that's all I got for now. Enjoy.
Fishermen shacks in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia
Bearskin Neck section of Rockport, a quaint stretch of old fishermen and lobstermen shacks that have gradually been turned into a tourist attraction of restaurants, shops and galleries. Rockport is a seaside town in Essex County, Massachusetts. Rockport is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Boston at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula. It is directly east of Gloucester and is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. Before the coming of the English explorers and colonists, Cape Ann was home to a number of Native American villages, inhabited by members of the Agawam tribe. Samuel de Champlain named the peninsula "Cap Aux Isles" in 1605, and his expedition may have landed there briefly. By the time the first Europeans founded a permanent settlement at Gloucester in 1623, most of the Agawams had been killed by diseases caught from early contacts with Europeans.—Wikipedia
This painting was the last large piece started in February 2019. COVID then hit, I had to move out of my studio and put everything in storage until I found a new studio to finish it. The title comes from Ancient Greece of being a vessel and being influenced by Dionysus. I love wine.

Les baraques de pêcheurs en face de Pellestrina dans la lagune de Venise About this artwork: Classification, Techniques & Styles Watercolor Watercolor is a painting in which gum arabic binds transparent pigments revealing the support of the painting. The gouache, of identical composition, is opaque. A watercolor is a water-based painting on paper. We rarely speak of a painting for a work painted in watercolor. Watercolor paintings are considered to be a unique way to creatively represent dreams, illusions, emotions and luminous feelings using water soluble pigments. However, painting with watercolors can be difficult. It's a difficult medium to master, in large part because it can be ruthless and unpredictable. Mistakes are difficult to correct and its fluid nature makes it difficult to control. Yet it is these very qualities that give the medium its undeniable charm. Figurative Figurative and colorful painting having taken the liberty of including all forms of art without border of cultural genre and geographic origin, without hierarchy of values between high and subculture. Technic Painting Painting is an art form of painting on a surface by aesthetically applying colored fluids. Painters represent a very personal expression on supports such as paper, rock, canvas, wood, bark, glass, concrete and many other substrates. Work of representation or invention, painting can be naturalistic and figurative, or abstract. It can have narrative, descriptive, symbolic, spiritual, or philosophical content.
