Hello Everyone! I certainly hope your summer has been one of family time, rejuvenation, and maybe a little learning! Mine has been all of those. We were able to take several trips to see family across this country to celebrate birthdays, babies, more birthdays, and just reconnections. Having time off during the summer is so important to me as we have spread to every corner. Having time off in the summer is also important to me to rejuvenate as a teacher. I always try to take advantage of the book studies our district offers. This year I was able to read three great choices. If I were to pick my top fav it would hands down be “ From Striving to Thriving” by Stephanie Harvey and Annie Ward. If you teach reading to any age kiddo, or if you are a parent of a school age child, you have to read this book. I am telling you, I literally almost cried when I finished it. It was almost like the authors were looking in on my teacher heart as they were writing this book. From the very first page where they state that “Voluminous pleasurable reading is key to literacy development,” to tabling the labels we put on our young readers, to learning how to embrace mistakes, to inner conversations and so much more! Every page is a gem, a jewel of research based instruction! My masters degree is in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in reading and I wish this book had been out when I was studying about reading levels! It has totally changed my thinking! One golden thread I found throughout this entire book is the mindset of trust, teach, transform. I will cling to these words this coming school year with my fellow teachers, and my new little students. The book also refers to “growth mindset” which I have done a lot of research on lately. In fact, that is one thing I want to share with you. I put together a little unit to help me work on our growth mindset this year. I know many of you have already been hard at work on this and we have too, just not in an organized way. So it was time to get it done! Here are just a few pics of the unit. The unit ended up to be close to 100 pages of posters, journal pages, books to make/read and so much more! I know I will use just about every page of it!!! A lot of it during the first week of school! To grab your own copy of the unit, simply CLICK HERE! YES! It's free! Ok! Next up! I have gotten so many e-mail asking what our beginning of the year theme is going to be this year! I finally got it done! We are going to venture into the original growth mindset guru- Dr. Seuss and his book, "Oh the Places You'll Go!" Such a great book to read at the beginning of the year. and don't you know we do all kinds of traveling and growing in first grade!! If you have used any of my other beginning of the year units, this one is very similar in content. Some binder cover templates, some meet the teacher stuff, some quick thematic assessments, some math games, some poetry, and a lot more! Thank you Dr. for such an inspirational book!!! Here are a few pics of the 100 page unit. And Click Here for your very own unit!! Well, I've had a blast this summer, but our break is almost over. I'm excited to work with some new team members that we added! And I'm excited to share some other new things with you! Thank you for stopping by for a quick look at what we've been up to. Stop again soon! If you are still on break- enjoy!!! If you are heading back to the classroom soon, have the best year yet!! Joyfully!! Nancy

This is an editable Word Document. This is a 32 week Spelling List for the entire year for first graders. There are 18 additional themed weekly spelling lists included. There are 50 pages total in this document. If your school is like mine we have limited amount of paper so I print 2 spelling lists on each page of paper and cut it in half to send home. You should be able to just print and go. What I do in my class is include one page of lined paper. For homework each Monday night my students write their spelling lists 2 times each and return it on Tuesday. As a teacher I know how important it is to edit your class list of spelling words to meet your student needs. This is why this entire document is editable. Also, included is a page of First Grade Suggested 100 High-Frequency Words to reference as well. Many of these words were included in the 32 weekly spelling lists which are enclosed. From mixed media to simple sketching, there's something here for every 1st grader.
Learning to read is one of the most complex skills for elementary students. Between letter sounds, blends, articulation, and prosody, there is so much to process
These are all of the 1st grade Open Court sight words. I laminate one for each student and let them keep it at their desk as a study tool. They may use dry erase marker to cross out or circle ones they need help with! :) This could also be used with Kindergarten students as enrichment and 2nd grade students as review!
Teaching behavior expectations in kindergarten is important, especially in the first few weeks of school. This often sets the stage for your class for the entire year. For students to fully understand what is expected of them, it is important that teachers address and teach these expectation. I usually spend a lot of time during the first weeks of school teaching student expectations and classroom behaviors. We complete sorts of good choices and bad choices in the classroom and discuss what makes them good and bad choices. We complete these sorts whole group and students also complete individual behavior reflection sheets. These work great during the first few weeks of school or when students may need a review. These include different levels of difficulty beginning with students simply deciding if an actions is a good or bad choice, to a student sort of good and bad choices (this is a freebie at the end of the blog post) to finally illustrating or writing good or bad choices. Also we color an emergent reader reviewing some of the classroom expectations. These can also just be used as little coloring pages when a classroom expectation is introduced. In your classroom, you may want to challenge your students to focus on a certain expectation for a week. Included are posters that would work great for this: These provide a visual and focus for students when expectations are being taught. You can make it a game and provide an incentive if students can meet this expectation a certain amount of times in a week. Once these expectations are taught it is important to keep students accountable to their actions. I have been using a visual think sheet in my classroom that is perfect for this. It is very appropriate for your early learners in pre-k or kindergarten or special ed because it includes pictures for students to show what they did. Students simply color in the choice they made and a better choice they can make. These are great reflections for students, communication for parents and documentation if necessary. You may also want to post these cool down methods where students can reflect on strategies to cool down, instead of getting upset. You can find this entire Behavior Think Sheets and Activities in my TPT store and the Free Good and Bad Choices Student Sort here:
