Hello Everyone! One wonderful perk about the 15 hour drive home? I was able to put the finishing touches on my Landforms unit. This unit is coming up in our curriculum, so I'm glad I had time to organize and put everything together. This mini unit includes almost 70 pages of learning centered around exploration of landforms. There are some social studies activities (of course), some ELA (abc order, vocabulary, antonyms, written expression), some math, and a couple of craft connections. I hope you can use even a small part of this. Here are a few pics of the unit. Landforms book inspired by AIMS curric. Unit includes patterns! mystery picture includes clues with mixed math practice If you are interested, please click here for your free unit! Well, spring break is almost over. I have missed my kids so much!! Can't wait to see them! But that's going to have to wait one extra day as I have jury duty tomorrow. Thank goodness for a wonderful substitute teacher who just so happens to be a dear friend. My kids are in good hands!! Next up? Natural resources and geometry units! Stay tuned!! As always, thanks for taking time to take a peek! I appreciate each and every one of you!! Take care! Joyfully! Nancy

Hello Everyone! What a great day to start a study on clouds!! Dark clouds this morning releasing a deluge of rain! By 1:00 beautiful clear sky with just a few cirrus clouds! Perfect example of our ever changing skies. I'll share our Cloud Unit in a second, but first I wanted to show some pics of our whole group math lesson. We are continuing our study of place value. After all the activities we did last week, it was time to see how all of this fits in relationship to other numbers. I pulled out our bigger than life 100 board and handed out some mystery picture clues. Each clue described a number in place value (tens and ones). The kids took turns putting their cards on the number for which their clue stood. When we finished putting all the clues down, a cloud was revealed! Use your imagination! It looks like a cloud, right??? The kids loved working together to create it!! I'm not even sure they realized they were growing their number sense!!! I did put together a little integrated cloud unit. We are going to try to get most of this in this week!! The unit also includes some poetry, another science activity and more!! You can get it if you click HERE!! Stay tuned for more cloud fun later in the week! Until then, have a wonderful week!! Thanks for stopping by for a peek!! Joyfully! Nancy

I can hardly believe our second week of school is almost over! I know most of you are going to start soon so I wanted to share what we have been up to this week: learning all about rules and laws! I used several activities from my new Rules & Laws unit. We started the week off reading the short book I wrote in the unit: Next, we talked about examples of rules and laws. We learned that rules are things we follow to keep us safe. Laws are rules that all people in a community must follow. We brainstormed examples of each and the kids filled out webs: The next day we read one of my favorite books, David Goes to School. The kids read along with me and we laughed a lot! I then gave the kids a sheet where they chose a rule, illustrated themselves following the rule and also what would happen if no one followed that rule: (helping others) (clean up my room) (pick up books) The next day we talked about how there are different rules depending on the setting (school, home, playground, etc.) The kids worked on a rule book where they had to write and illustrate a rule for each setting: (Don't run from school) (Raise your hand) (Listen to your Mom) (No throwing rocks) (Sit down and do not stand up) Today I read them one of my favorite books about rules: Please Play Safe! Penguin's Guide to Playground Safety. We just got a new playground so this book was a perfect way to review safety on the playground. Finally we created a class book about why we need rules: (we can stay safe and we can't be mean) (we could be safe and work and make us happy) (it helps us be safe) (something bad could happen) We had a great time learning about rules! If you liked these activities, check out my unit by clicking on the picture below! First two people to comment will get a free copy! Don't forget to include your email!

Happy Sunday. I'm linking up with Collaboration Cuties to share a favorite text to use with social studies. One of my favorite social studies books is Mapping Penny's World by Loreen Leedy. This book is very similar to Me On the Map by Joan Sweeney (another favorite). In this book Lisa learns about different types of maps. She uses her dog Penny to complete a mapping project. I love this book because of the illustrations, the in depth explanation of maps, and because it is part of a series of three books that feature Penny (Measuring Penny and It's Probably Penny). My first graders love all of these books. Below you will find a freebie to use with Mapping Penny's World. Students can draw a maps of their bedrooms and create a key to go with their maps. Click on the picture below if you would like a copy. The clip art is from Scrappin Doodles. I highly recommend Mapping Penny's World and all of the other Penny books for your classroom library. The stories are cute, the information is abundant, and your kids will really enjoy them. For more tried and true recommendation head on over to Collaboration Cuties and check out the other Must Read Mentor Texts for social studies. Thanks for reading and have a great week.
