Hello Everyone, I wanted to share a couple of things we did last week to finish up our Grinch Week and a fun subtraction Reindeer Game we played this morning. On Friday, the day started with Fidget With It Friday and Green Play Doh! We practiced spelling our sight words! We got to enjoy that wonderful Dr. Seuss book again by making Grinch Cookies with our third grade book buddies! I drew a sample on the board and the kids did great!! Colored frosting, mini marshmallows, black licorice strings, and yellow Sixlettes. Our Grinch Cookies turned out great!! We made our Grinch Grime. This year I got Green Glitter Glue to use instead of white school glue! It turned out so cool!! Kids loved it!! We had such a fun day. At the end I gave the kids some Candy Canes the Grinch had left behind. You should have heard them when they read what he had done to the red and white ones!! :) EWWWW! Our Amazingly Dedicated, Sweet, and Fun Team!!! Today, Monday, we began our week of Reindeer Games. We are going to learn all about reindeer (caribou) and include them in all of our other curriculum areas. This morning I put together a fun little Reindeer Race. We divided into two groups and sat on either side of the large work mat. Each team had to roll a die and count down from 20 that many spaces. We put "lights" on each number as we counted down. The team that got to the finish line first won. Great subtraction practice! The kids each had a recording page of their own. Tomorrow we'll try it with addition! The cute reindeer plastic tablecloth is from...you guessed it! The Dollar Store! :) Click here for your copy! There's one for addition too! It's hard to believe, but we are moving right on into the heart of the Holiday Season! I know it's a super busy time of year, but it's my absolute favorite. Lots of Amazing Christmas STEM Activities that combine fun holiday activity with learning! December deas for K-6th!
Need a fun lesson for your first graders tomorrow? I think I might have something for you: these adorable penguins! This lesson teaches so stinkin' much: warm colors, brush control, using watercolors, painting spirals, a review of lines and shapes and much more. The kids loved creating these. I made a video just for you to share with your students to walk them through this lesson. Here I'll break it down for you day by day. If this image looks familiar, that's because my kindergarten did a slightly similar lesson. You can check that out here. I see both my kindergarten and my first graders for 30 minutes twice a week. So here's how we spent Day 1 and 2: Painting spirals! Midway through day 2, most kids were finished painting their 12" X 18" papers with spirals. Once complete, the kids placed their work on the drying rack and worked on the following... With my shorter art classes, we don't have sketchbooks. Instead, we sketch on dry erase boards. This cuts down on paper waste...and, added bonus, kids LOVE drawing on dry erase boards. I got mine at the Dollar Tree. I created a step by step penguin so my students could practice independently while their classmates finished their paintings. This is something new I've been doing this year and I love it. Not a moment of instructional/practice/work time wasted...and no wasted paper either! Day 3: guided penguin drawing. These guys are huge, measuring in at 12" X 18". We used bingo daubers and drew on the floor. Yes, crazy...but it is the method that I found works best for me and my students. I had each place a messy mat under their penguin so we wouldn't get ink on the floor. Of course we did! It mopped up. Day 4: The following art class, we added the chalk to create form and painted. Some classes moved quickly enough that we were also able to cut them out! If you are looking for a fun winter collaborative project, that could be it! Skip the background painting and just create these. Add them to a backdrop and, ta da! Instant winter mural! We hung these up with the kindergarten snowman for a fun and frosty display. One of my top goals this year is to convince my kids that they are writers. Writing is not just something your teacher makes you do. It is a way to express yourself. I feel like one of the best ways to get through to my kids is to give them authentic purposes for their writing. As we neared the end of writing personal narratives, we decided to have a Publishing Party. We invited the principal, the class across the hall, and few other guests! The kids were pumped and worked extra hard to polish up their final pieces. On the day of the party, I typed up a list of our favorite authors (In Cara Carroll fonts of course). After I cut out the names, I glued them to a big piece of butcher paper. The paper would serve two purposes. One- I could hang it behind the kids as kind of a backdrop. Two (and much more importantly) the kids would see THEIR names by some of the greatest authors out there. They grinned from ear to ear. They got my message loud and clear (they also tried really hard to get their names right by their personal favorites). One by one the kids read their personal narratives to their audience. After we read we celebrated a little more with a little snack, but don't worry- we were back to the grind the next day. I can't WAIT to celebrate our informative writing next time! This week I took a little break from our reading series to do a Patricia Polacco author study. If you follow me on FB or Instagram, you know I am borderline obsessed with Polacco. NO ONE tells a story better than she does. Yesterday we read Thundercake and so of course we had to make some! I had already decided that I was going to have the kids write a summary of Thundercake since we are working SO hard on that skill, but as I was making a mad dash through the grocery story to find everything I needed- an idea struck me! Isn't that how it always works! I decided that I would much prefer to have my students make personal connections to the book and write about their own fears. We decided instead of making "Thunder"cake, we were making "Fear"cake. So first we brainstormed our fears. I *may* have had to hide a snicker over seagulls. After we brainstormed our fears, I had them do a little bit of prewriting. I have found that when my kids fill out an extensive graphic organizer before they write a final draft, that their final draft is almost the "summarized" version. So I decided I was going to give the kids one pink post-it and three blue post-its. The pink post-it was for their fear and the blue post-its were for the three ingredients that they would add to their fear cake to help them get rid of their fears. We talked about "cooking lingo" and I was blown away by the voice they added to their writing. This little cutie said her cake needed a "dash of bravery, a sprinkle of protection, and a cup of happiness" I was THRILLED with their pieces because they were able to give a one to two sentence summary of Thundercake, a personal connection, and a bit of creative writing when making up their cake recipes! Perfection! And of COURSE I let them bake! Smiles, friends- tomorrow is FRIDAY!!!
