Ok guys, trial by fire here. We just finished our first two weeks using a completely new-to-us curriculum, Ambleside Online. Did I mention this is our first year doing narrations too? I'd say it went "ok", perhaps better than I thought. And no, we didn't get to everything. Since it's nice to just hear what

Hello Everyone! This week we will begin our study of nouns and verbs. I wanted to do a quick share of something my cuties will be working on. I love the story "The little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything." by Linda Williams. I plan on using this book to study several different things. First off? Nouns! I wrote a little noun song and plan to use it to find all the nouns in the story. I created a quick little cut and glue sorting activity with pics from the story and then a recording page for the kids to write the nouns. Here are a few sample pics of the unit. For your 9 page printable, click here! Unless you're afraid!! :) Keep an eye out for the Verb Unit that will go along with this story as well! Joyfully! Nancy

Use this activity as an ice breaker for the first week of school or as a classroom community builder. I have my students sit in a circle around our carpet, and I project the "Roll a topic" sheet up on the SmartBoard. Each student takes a turn rolling the dice and answering the corresponding question. I hope your class enjoys this activity as much as mine does! Enjoy! :)
This is a fun Back to School Ice Breaker activity to get your students up and out of their seats during the first week of school....just pass out the jokes and they have to match them up and find their "Joke Partner". After everyone has matched up have the partners stand up and tell the class the jo...
Next week we will be starting a one-week theme of argumentative speech. On the first lesson you will get to settle on a topic, do some research, write down some ideas and then you should prepare to give a speech on the following lesson. The speech will be recorded on your computer in a private setting and sent to me for assessment - if everything works out well we will also listen to a few speeches together and give feedback on them. Here's a little intro for next week: You can find the plan here + a video illustrating ethos, pathos and logos here:
Hello Everyone!! This is my favorite time of the school year. We are finishing up our testing, the kids have become quite independent with everything, they have become readers and writers, they have become problem solvers, I could go on and on! I want to share some of their darling work and a couple of free units. First off, after the big chick hatching extravaganza, I decided to have the kids write about what they would do if they had a baby chick. From what they wrote, they would make great chick owners! I then let them create a chick! All I gave them was a yellow circle. They turned out so cute! The next thing I want to share is the beginning of our poetry unit. Yes, April is poetry month, but we are getting a bit of a late start. We began by talking about what a poem is, and created a "Poetree" anchor chart. I read some different types of poem including Shel Silverstein's Poet's Tree. We talked about how sometimes a poet has fun with words and makes us really think. Shel does exactly that!! We decided to take the subject of spring and create a simple list poem that had some flair with how we published it. They turned out so sweet! CLICK HERE for your free 25 page unit on poetry!! The last thing for tonight is a new unit I just finished. In science we are studying plants for the next couple of weeks and in math we begin our study of measurement using nonstandard units. Well, put those two curriculum areas together and you get "Splat the Cat, Oopsie Daisy" by Rob Scotton. The kids looooove Splat, so I decided to use that little guy as our inspiration all next week. this little unit contains cross curricular learning opportunities. Here's a peek! These are just a few of the over 60 pages in the unit! I hope you can use at least a few of them. You have to go get that sweet book if you don't have it yet. I found some at Target, but of course you can always get on Amazon or go to your favorite bookstore. If you are interested in the unit, don't wait, CLICK HERE!!!! Well, that's all I've got for tonight!! Thanks for stopping by for another peek!! Hope you can swing by again soon to check out what we're up to!!! Now off to get my math tubs ready for next week! Can't wait!! Talk to you all soon! Joyfully! Nancy

It amazes me how much class size affects my teaching and my students. I started the year with 31 students. I just lost my second one at the beginning of this week, so I'm down to 29. I've had 2 kids out all week on long vacations and 2 more out sick. So I've had a class of 25 ALL week!! It's been a big difference. Even though the ones gone are little angels and I still have all the hard ones, it really makes a BIG difference!! Our district and researchers keep telling us that class size doesn't make a difference but I have to beg to differ with them. It makes a HUGE difference in first grade. With a smaller class I can spread myself out more- work with more kids, more often, for longer periods of time. We can get more done- 25 kids take less time to finish an assignment than 31. With all the activities we do in first grade through out the day it can really add up. With less kids, fighting for my attention, I can give more attention to those that really need it. During class discussions, there is more participation by more kids. The shyer kids start to open up. It just feels more like a close knit community rather than a big city. I can hardly imagine what it would be like to teach less than 20. What a dream!! Back to reality. Our school has been doing training in SIOP this year. It stands for Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol. You can find out more HERE. It actually is training in teaching English Language Learner but our school does not have a very high percentage of ELLs. We actually have only 3 out of 180 in our grade level. But the SIOP model is really best practices and a great review in how to teach better. With the new common core our principal thought is would be a great help. We've had to do lesson studies and just finished one yesterday. Our team did ours on Synonyms. It's great to collaborate and work together as a team developing and analyzing a lesson. Here's a practice page we used and a cute song we found. I don't know who to give credit for the song but our kiddos really liked it. Click HERE if you'd like to grab a copy. Hey, believe it or not but it's FRIDAY tomorrow- again! Gotta love FRIDAY! I hope you all have a GREAT one.

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.
