How can you really baby PROOF anything? I'm already struggling between letting Elyse learn and not letting her hurt herself. Last week she was having a ball swinging a wooden puzzle above her head and down to her lap. Up and down it went and I just knew she was going to bonk herself. I watched her wondering - do I take it from her and make her mad? Or do I just let her go and if she hits her head it will be one of her many lessons in learning to be more careful. It wasn't a real heavy puzzle, so I chose the latter, ended up with a crying baby crawling into my lap and me wondering if I'd made the wrong choice. Choices like these are how I feel about baby proofing. There is such a range of how to "baby proof" your home. Our goal is similar to the day with the puzzle. Our "baby proofing" is going to be more like "baby resistant". We're working on safety covers on outlets, getting chemicals up high, securing bookcases to the wall and moving out the sharp-edged coffee table, replacing it with a leather storage ottoman. Floor lamps are staying and so are some of the knick-knacks. Here we will work on the word "No", "Stop" or "Not for Elyse" and see how we do! The biggest safety concern in our home is our fireplace. It is a slate fireplace with a beautiful slate tile hearth. Lovely as it is - it is incredibly dangerous for an on-the-go babester making her way around the room. We talked a lot about the hearth and how to make it safer even before Elyse was born. We discussed gates, pillows, foam, bumpers, guards, but none of the ideas really sounded ideal. Then, Bill came up with the idea to build it into a bench. It is genius really - and I'm so happy with how it turned out! Babyproofing: From Fireplace Hearth to a Bench Materials: 1"x2" and 1"x3" Furring Strips Wood Glue Screws 2" Foam Sander/Sandpaper Vinyl (or your favorite fabric) Staple Gun & Staples Felt Floor Pads (optional) Build a frame to encase your hearth. We used 1”x2” and 1”x3” furring strips to form the frame. This wood is extremly lightweight and easy to use. Use glue to piece together and then screw the ends and corners to ensure it is secure. Use a hand sander to round the edges and corners to make sure there are no sharp edges. Here is a closer look at the underneath of one of the sides of the bench. We went to our local foam outlet and purchased 2” foam. Cut the foam and attach with glue and finish with staples. We chose vinyl to cover our bench, but you could use oilcloth, leather or faux - or any time of washable surface. Baby is going to be attracted to this, so you'll want something easy to clean. Based on the price and selection we went with vinyl in a grey color that closely matches the slate on the fireplace. It blends in beautifully. Another look underneath. Wrap the fabric tightly onto the foam and fold the edges like a package - securing it with glue. Attach felt pads to the bottom to keep the floor from getting scratched (if you have hardwood like we do). Here is the bench pulled away from the hearth - really easy to remove. I am so proud of Bill. He did an amazing job! It is comfortable enough to sit on as a bench for extra seating, keeps us from gasping when the baby goes near the fireplace and looks great! Much better than ugly baby gates and because it is built-to-fit it is a much better (and cheaper option) than what you will find on-line. Just a quick slide onto the hearth and you are set! Let us know if you give this a try. We'd love to see what you come up with!

So I was looking at one of my favourite blogs-Cote de Texas today and it got me thinking...... What does one do with a big black hole??? Here is what I mean: Cote de Texas Cote de Texas Now I am sure that we can all agree that these pics show a gorgeous room. But all I can see is the big black hole above the fireplace. Now I know that we all have to live. Most of us watch TV. So what does one do to hide this monstrosity we call the TV?? Now the thing that bugs me the most about these 2 pics is that it is quite obvious that a lot of money was spent to decorate this house. I am just wondering why they couldn't hide the TV. It is so incongruous to the rest of the room. Now, it may be that the clients were very adamant about wanting a TV and that they didn't care how it looked. It's just that for such a lovely feminine room, the TV is such an eyesore. If it were my room I would want solutions to hide it when not in use. In addition, the TV seems very large in size- maybe they could have mounted a slightly smaller one?? Also, if you have ever watched TV that is mounted over a fireplace- insert neck strain here. It is far too high to watch when mounted here. Just sayin....... It is such a hard thing to deal with design wise. Your fireplace is your focal point-or it should be. Now you have a monster TV to deal with. Many feel that by mounting it above the fireplace this is the best solution- what do you think? Here are some of my favourite ways to minimize the black hole we call the TV: Source .This is a great example of how to hide the TV. With a little mill work and a great carpenter-why not build it into the mantle as shown above. SourceIn this example art covers the TV. You just press a button and presto the art roles away. I know that Candice Olsen has used this trick many times to hide her clients TV's. Is it free- NO. But many are already going to such an expense, that hiding the TV may be one of the functions of the room the client may want to think of. Candice OlsenHere is an example of what I was speaking of. Candice has used this trick of the rolling art many times to hide the TV- doesn't it look great??? SourceAgain some great mill work and you have hidden the eyesore. Source Houzz This is actually one of my favourite fireplaces of all time. I love the mini barn door treatment and I love the mill work. Houzz In this instance the designer has chosen to use colour to help minimize the impact of the TV. I think this is a great solution that could be open to many without paying for art that rolls away for instance. Houzz Again this is a great example of using colour to your advantage. I call it a "camoflage" tool. Houzz A beautiful tile door hides the TV here. The colours in the doors ties in nicely with the rest of the colours in the space. These are but a few examples of how you can hide your TV. It is something we are all faced with when dealing with a fireplace and a TV. So where is your TV?? Have a great day everyone. Megan
