About The Artwork This energetic piece is fierce and powerful. Inspired by this funny little vintage print I have. A mermaid flipping her tail in the ocean in front of a giant moon. It reads, “She dreams of the ocean late at night, and longs for the wild salt air.” I bought this little print because it reminds me of another life, living by the beach in for 20 years.. Now that I’m back on the East Coast, I do miss being tossed around by the force of the Pacific Ocean… Driving down PCH on a Sunday, staring at the almost tropical spots of color in the water (while stuck in traffic). The way this piece started is so different than the way it ended up. Such is life! How we begin in vastly different than how we end up. So this piece is a reminder to remember who you are and to reflect on who you were. About The Artwork Recently I have been studying the constellations and was inspired by the interesting line patterns. I initially made this piece quite small, just 16x20", but decided that it deserved a much larger format, and painted it again. Included in the layers are acrylic paint, spraypaint, painted paper scraps and vintage dress making patterns are collaged into the painting— adding richness of line work in the underpainting of ochre and gray. About The Artwork The work has a Mid-century modern vibe—minimal, a little quirky and upbeat. The collection of B&W collages is about making something out of nothing. Made from simple materials which are elevated by the high contrast of matte black gesso, acrylic paints, ink and spray paint, primitively painted on a warm white newsprint, without thinking. About The Artwork 16 x 20 x 5/8” mixed media collage on wood panel. This is made of a combo of hand-painted papers and old Life Magazine’s, that my grandparents had saved. The typographic elements are from a Dickies ad and a Lucky Strike ad. The second layer of house paint which I then sanded off to excavate some of the collage textures and give the look of an old wall. The line work is intentionally primitive and made with the left hand of a righty person. About The Artwork 36x36” on 1.5” gallery wrapped stitched canvas. In a new series of "Stitches": large scale abstract mixed media paintings on canvas that have been cut up and rearranged to reveal an eclectic combination. Throughout this work, the theme of overcoming fears and letting go is emphasized, when I take the leap with my scissors to cut up a completed work that I had dedicated numerous hours to. Unexpected situations arise when we let go. The process is quite similar to my painted paper collages, but in this case I am exchanging the paper & glue for canvas & thread. A vintage Singer sewing machine was used to sew raw and canvases together. Mix media used includes Caran D'ache Neopastels, Oil Bars, Graphite and acrylic paint are used in a palette of Phthalo Turquoise, black, lotus pink and cadmium red on raw canvas.
