It's no secret I love kindergarten. Every year we get the pleasure of seeing these children come in to school in September as babies, and leave as first graders. It's awesome to watch, I'm amazed every year at their growth. But I'm also amazed every September at how young they are, what little skills they have. So many just are not ready for kindergarten. But guess what? Ready or not here they come. One of the first skills we work on is fine motor skills. The kids are going to need to color, cut and write. Let's talk about cutting. Yikes, every year it seems like I have more and more kids who literally don't know how to hold a scissors, never mind cut a straight line. Over my career I have learned a few tricks to help kids cut. I'm happy to share with you. #1 Let them cut straws. Gather up some of the straws from the cafeteria and let them cut them. Straws are perfect for cutting because they are familiar to the kids and they are easy to hold. A straw stays still, no flopping over. The kids love to make "candles" with the straws and put them on play doh to make a birthday cake. Try it, it's awesome! #2 So let's talk about play doh. One of the greatest tools in our teacher chest. Have the kids roll out a "snake" and cut the play doh. It's not as stiff as a straw, but it works great. Having kids cut items that they usually don't cut takes away any fear of "not doing it right" There is no right way to cut play doh, just have fun. The kids wont even know they are working on cutting. #3 Make a mosiac. Give the kids lots of construction paper scrapes and have them cut them up into small pieces. Cut up yellow and glue it on a bus template, cut up red and glue on an apple template. You get the idea. Again there is no right or wrong way to cut the pieces, you can even tear some. Take away the pressure and kids will shine. saved from mymontessorijourney.typepad.com #4 Use tag board. One of the biggest problems with cutting is holding the paper correctly. If you use tag board the paper is easier to hold hence easier to cut. #5 Cut thin pieces of paper not whole pages. Again a thin piece of paper is easier to hold and the kids will have more success. #6 Give them something to hold onto. I use papers with little graphics on them for the kids to place their thumb on. It helps remind them to move their hand up the paper as they cut. Here's a sample of my fall themed resource here.

Rob Scotton's, Splat the Cat, offers many opportunities for primary learning activities. 1st graders explored painting and cutting shapes to create their own version of Splat. Students started with the basic shapes for their cat -- a large oval with triangle ears. The arms and a tail were options, too. Kids used a brush to paint these main shapes, but for all those skinny little hairs, they switched to homemade paper "combs." The details of eyes, nose, mouth and pink for the ears and paws were done with cut paper and glue, so everyone got a little practice with those basic skills. For most classes we let our Splats dry and added final touches on a second day. When the paint was dry, a little pink crayon on the tummies finished off our Splats. I loved the variety of personalities represented. Somebody thought to add a belly button to this one: And this little guy with 2 arms up looks ready to spring onto (or after) something!! Hey hey! Is it anyone else's first day of SPRING BREAK??? I'm so excited and ready for much needed R&R but first I wanted to recap my week. I know school may be the last thing on your mind right now but I hope you can use some of these ideas when you go back to school! 1. ST. PATRICK'S DAY COUNT/ADD & FILL I had lots of St. Patrick's Day activities I had made from last year (you can see those here) but making centres is one of my favourite things about teaching, so I couldn't resist making a few more! At this centre, students are invited to look at the pots and either read the numeral or addition sentence. Then put that many shamrocks, pom poms or beads in the pot with the tweezers! Fine motor, 1:1 correspondance and number ID/addition practice all rolled into one! 2. ST. PATRICK'S DAY INVITATION TO ADD/SUBTRACT We are focusing on addition and subtraction right now in math so I set out this invitation to show math with loose parts. Students were invited to make number sentences (addition or subtraction) but were free too show other types of math as well (e.g. patterning, creating sets etc.) The first day I set this out it was crickets... but then I moved it to a different table and the next few days so many kids went there and showed me some great mathematical thinking! Sometime's all a centre needs is a fresh location ;) 3. NAME, COLOUR & CUT 2D SHAPES I saw this on @everythingfdk's Instagram and knew I had to try it! This was a HUGE hit. So many of my kiddos need fine motor practice/scissors skills and some still need some shape ID practice as well. This centre allows them to work on all of these skills! We had this centre out every day since last Friday and the table has been full consistently all week! At first we had circle, triangle, square, heart, star and hexagon but after a few days also added rectangle, diamond, pentagon, trapezoid, moon and octagon. This centre also gave them an opportunity to talk about which shapes were easier/harder to cut which led to comparing attributes (e.g. the curves are harder to cut then the straight lines. Squares are easy to cut because they only have straight lines.) If you would like a copy of these cutting cards you can click on the image below to download them for free! 4. ADDITION PLAY DOUGH As mentioned above we have been focusing on addition and subtraction so we have been rotating through some addition and subtraction centres! I love these cards because it helps the kids practice so many skills (fine motor, 1:1 correspondance, numeral identification) in addition to the addition (does that make sense? lol). My kiddos love anything with play dough so they loved these! If you are interested in these addition play dough cards they are included in my addition pack on TpT. ADDITION ZIPLOCK NUMBER LINE I saw this post by Hefty on Facebook and thought these number line bags were such a great idea! I made them and set them out with some addition flashcards. I also added a recording sheet to the centre to support the kids who wanted to record their work. I love this recording sheet because you can add it to any centre!
