Characterized by his deeply honest means of expression and fascination with Orientalism, Surrealism, and social commentary, Moscow painter Stanislav Plutenko brings his vivid dreams to life. Like a rush of blood to the head, inspiration for his next painting overwhelms Moscow realist Stanislav Plutenko with authority — and the artist must act quickly to record […]
A painting by Franz Kupka, a Czech avant-garde painter living in Paris. The painting is a mixture of realism and abstraction. Called The Yellow Scale, it depicts a portrait, but the painting technique consists of a feast of violent slashes of yellow impasto. This was a work of the transitional stage of Kupka's oeuvre when he moved from an impressionistic style to the world of abstraction. In the painting we see a supremely bored male individual, staring at us with a stern expression on his green-tinted face, a wisp of black hair sweeping across a wide brow, lounging back in a yellow dressing gown, his head resting against a large soft pillow in an oriental cane armchair. There is a self-rolled cigarette in the semi-salute of his upraised left hand, whilst his right hand's first finger rests in the opening of a yellow-covered Charpentier paperback on his lap. Who is this lounger? It is no other than Charles Baudelaire, the French decadent poet, based on one of Nadar's daguerreotype photographs. (From a review by B.J. Gilbert)
Felice Casorati was an Italian painter, sculptor, and printmaker. The paintings for which he is most noted include figure compositions, portraits and still lifes, which are often distinguished by unusual perspective effects. Born in Novara he showed an early interest in music and art. To please his parents he studied law at the University of Padua until 1906, but his ambition to be a painter was confirmed in 1907 when a painting of his was shown in the Venice Biennale. The works he produced in the early years of his career are naturalistic in style, but after 1910 the influence of the symbolists and particularly of Gustav Klimt turned him toward a more visionary approach. In 1915 he had a solo exhibition at the Rome Secession III, where he showed several paintings and the first of his sculptures. His military service in World War I began that year and lasted until his discharge in 1917. In 1918, "intrigued by the decadent atmosphere of Turin with its sinister views", he settled there with his mother and two sisters. His works of the next decade typify, in their emphasis on geometry and formal clarity, the "return to order" then prevalent in the arts as a reaction to the war. Although many critics found his work cold, cerebral, and academic, Casorati achieved international recognition as a leading figure in this movement. Often working in tempera, Casorati drew inspiration from his study of Renaissance masters, especially Piero della Francesca, as in his 1922 portrait entitled Silvana Cenni. This symmetrical composition of a seated woman in a white dress is perhaps the best-known of the artist's works. In it, the careful rendering of volumes results paradoxically in a sense of unreality which is characteristic of Casorati's art. In 1925, Rafaello Giolli summarized the disconcerting aspects of Casorati's art—"The volumes have no weight in them, and the colors no body. Everything is fictitious: even the living lack all nervous vitality. The sun seems to be the moon ... nothing is fixed or definite"—and argued that these very qualities give his work its originality, and connect him to the metaphysical painters. Casorati himself wrote, in 1931: "In taking up, against me, the old polemic of classicism and romanticism, people rail against intellectualized and scholastic order, accuse my art of being insincere, and willfully academic—in a word, of being neoclassical. ... since my art is born, so to speak, from within, and never has its source in changing "impressions", it is quite natural that ... static forms, and not the fluid images of passion, should be reflected in my works". Briefly arrested in 1923 for his involvement with an anti-Fascist group, Casorati subsequently avoided antagonizing the regime. Beginning in 1923, he opened his studio to the young art students of Turin. One of his famous students was the Italian painter Enrico Accatino. After 1930 the severity of Casorati's earlier style softened somewhat and his palette brightened. He continued to exhibit widely, winning many awards, including the First Prize at the Venice Biennale of 1938. He was also involved in stage design. He died in Turin in 1963.

She had a formal education in Fine Arts. Since 2000 she also is interested in photography and she started by doing theater photography, and informal photography seeking to capture moments of everyday life. She shoots with an analog camera and B&W 35mm film. She considers analog photography to be one of the components of the intellectual honesty of her work. She believes that digital photography, can take some of the photographic fact, given their almost endless possibilities of manipulation. Every fraction of a second contained in her photographs corresponds to a narrative in which words are not enough. It seems that her lens captures states of the soul. The irony is another of her peculiarities, present in most of her photographic work, even when the subject is apparently contrary. Several exhibitions in galleries and public spaces have attracted public attention, allowing expose her work abroad. She holds numerous awards and Grand Prize Winner obtained at prestigious competitions of international photography. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections, national and international.

The paintings of Takato Yamamoto have a vicious beauty; their stunning detail is akin to the Ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the 18th century that initially influenced his work, but Yamamoto has developed his style into something he calls “heisei aestheticism.” He combines brutality with serenity in his paintings – blood and gore envisioned in intricate […]

Portrait of Paul Ranson by Georges Lacombe Continuing the theme of artists associated with Les Nabis, I’m taking a look at the work of Paul Ranson (1864 – 1909). Ranson was born in Limoges, France. As the son of a successful local politician, he received permission to pursue his artistic dreams and started studying at the Ecoles des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges, but transferred to the more prestigious Académie Julian in Paris in 1886. In 1888, at the Académie, he met Paul Sérusier who encouraged him to join his post-impressionist art group Les Nabis. From 1890 onwards Ranson hosted meetings for Les Nabis at his home. Ranson’s work showed a consistent commitment to the decorative arts: like Aristide Maillol he made designs for tapestry, some of which were executed by his wife. His linear, sinuous style, seen in works such as Woman Standing beside a Balustrade with a Poodle, had strong affinities with Japanese prints and with contemporary developments in Art Nouveau design; it was a style suited to a variety of media, stained glass, lithography, ceramics or tapestry. c1895 Woman Standing beside a Balustrade with a Poodle oil on panel Ranson tended to favour exotic, symbolic or quasi-religious motifs rather than subjects observed from nature. In his Nabi Landscape of 1890, for example, he sets a variety of obscure feminine symbols within a fantasy landscape. 1890 Nabis Landscape After his early death in 1909 his wife continued to run the Académie Ranson, which they had opened in 1908 to disseminate Nabi aesthetic ideas and techniques to a younger generation. Teaching was undertaken on a voluntary basis by other Nabis, especially Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. 1880 Christ and Buddha 1891 The Blue Cliffs oil on canvas 1893 The Sorceress and the Cat oil on canvas 1893 Tiger in the Jungle lithograph 1895 Spring tapestry c1895 The Clearing or Edge of the Wood 1898 Picking Flowers oil on canvas 1899 Arums et Iris Violets et Jaunes oil and tempera on canvas 1899 Chardons et Digitales oil and tempera on canvas 1899 Foxgloves 1899 Iris et Grandes Fleurs Jaunes et Mauves oil and tempera on canvas 1899 Tounesols et Pavots oil and tempera on canvas c1900 Three Bathers Among the Irises c1902 Vines c1905 Three Beeches 1906 The Bathing Place or Lotus Apple Tree With Red Fruit (Details unknown)

Akiya Kageichi is a Japanese illustrator who calls himself Golden Gravel, a name which may refer to Japanese rock gardens. His sinister jesters, lazy rulers and clandestine warriors are set within scenes full of chaotic imagery. Astrological symbols, particularly moons, are heavily prominent, suggesting the mysterious forces of dark nights are at work. In a single plane, objects morph, creating dynamic and active scenes. Kageichi reveals hidden underworlds and secret futures, in which sorcery and witchcraft pull the strings and determine what happens in the real world.
Leopold Schmutzler was born at Mies in Bohemia but settled in Munich. His works of the late nineteenth-century, like the Russell-Cotes painting, treat contemporary and 'frock-coat' genre subjects with titles such as The Suitor, The Centre of Attention or Woman Eavesdropping on a Conversation.
