Michael Kenna is a master of contemporary photography. Known for clean compositions, long exposures and minimalist aesthetics, Kenna’s signature style remains highly influential among a generation of photographers. Kenna views his process as a conversation with the landscape, each individual communion lasting anywhere between a few minutes to a number of hours. The images are transformative, and photographed in black-and-white because, as the artist describes, “color is what we see all the time.” He furthers this approach in the darkroom, spending hours on his exquisite silver prints, shaping the photograph to match his uncompromising vision. “I want photographs to be a mystery, an interpretation, a catalyst for one’s imagination… we fill all our time up with noise and chaos, so I hope a viewer can enter into a photograph and feel the beauty of this place, the calmness, the tranquility.” – Michael Kenna

About The Artwork Taken at Geneva Lake, this work is the winner of the 2nd Apollon Award of the Greek Photographic Society. Minimalism, both as a philosophy of art and life, has deeply influenced my work. I draw inspiration from various objects, like the sea and the sky and from my emotional response to them. It is in the simple feelings that they evoke to me—vastness, quietness, tranquility, symmetry, and balance—that I find beauty. I favour long exposures because they allow me to introduce the dimension of time in a two dimensional medium and to create a dreamy atmosphere. Photographing with slow shutter speed, over a period of time, you can capture the changing world: rivers flow, clouds pass, the waves sway to and fro. The film can accumulate time, light, and events in a way elusive to the eye. The real becomes surreal. My work turns away from representation, conceptualism, and the endless search for meaning, and focuses on the wonder of beauty and simplicity. Black & White Film Captured image of vintage typewriter. Fine art Black and White print in choice of size and finish. ARTIST'S STATEMENT I have studied traditional black and white photography with a number of academic professors over the years since the 1970s.All of my images are captured on black and white film.I have also studied in the same academic settings, the history of photography and therefore historical processes since the mid 19th century. One person I feel important in this context is Sir John Herschel who in 1839 coined the word "photography" from the Greek "photo",light, and "graph" to write, in other words to "write with light.Herschel also invented the Cyanotype process a very early photography process and one of the first historical processes I learned.Since learning that process I have added many other historical processes that require UV light to print and therefore must be printed in the sun or some other source of UV light. Also in the historical context the cameras that I use are also at least 50 to120 years old, they range from 35mm up to 8x10 format cameras, again all using black and white film.I develop all film myself, and the combinations of the hundreds of different films and developers are endless and contribute to the artistic process of creating a physical fine art photograph.Once the film is developed the negatives are used to produce one of the historical process prints on a variety of art paper many times watercolor paper, creating a one of a kind print that is impossible of replication.Much of the developed film is scanned and digital prints can be made from these in unlimited editions .The works I will be offering here are therefore initially captured with vintage equipment and then processed in the natural world using the "magic" of physics and organic chemistry. What I hope to offer here are images in hard copy and printed as described above, and curated based on selection previously either by publication in art magazines, or selected for juried gallery shows, or some way selected as meaningfully by others. I offer for your consideration my work as a photographic artist.
There is so much beauty in our everyday and by “beauty” I do not speak of conventional beauty, but actually: harmony, truthfulness and that which is telling.

This photo named "Black and Equwhite 0241" was part of a black and white photography landscape series featuring horse art. These horse pictures were shot in Patagonia. This is a limited edition, hand-signed piece with a certificate of authenticity. Arriving at a certain place with the most southern organic garden was a delightful surprise. The setting itself was a work of art, with the rugged landscape blending seamlessly with the vibrant colors of the garden. It was a place where nature thrived, and the horses played an integral role in this harmonious ecosystem. One morning, as the sun painted the sky with hues of gold and orange, I decided to venture out and witness the gauchos preparing the horses for the day ahead. It was a sight that filled me with awe and wonder, as I observed the intricate dance between humans and animals. The gauchos, with their weathered faces and rugged attire, exuded a sense of wisdom and respect for the horses. They moved with a grace and confidence that only comes from years of working alongside these magnificent creatures. It was as if they spoke a language understood by both horse and man, a silent dialogue of trust and mutual understanding. The horses, with their strong and graceful bodies, became my muse. Their wild manes flowing in the wind, their eyes filled with curiosity and intelligence - these were the elements I sought to capture in my photographs. But it was not just about capturing a beautiful image. It was about delving deeper into the art of animals, exploring the emotions, energy, and spirit that radiated from these magnificent creatures. It was about revealing the soul behind their eyes, the stories they had to tell. Abundant sharing will go to the iiilibervive foundation that helps support local + faire trade designers and artisans. Street Photography /2000. Portugal / Analog camera photo / B&W 35 mm film. 400 iso / Gelatin Silver Print Signed, titled, negative date & print date on verso. Ana Maria is visual artist. She had a formal education in Fine Arts. Since 2000 she also is interested in photography and she started by doing theater photography, and informal photography seeking to capture moments of everyday life. She shoots with an analog camera and B&W 35mm film. She considers analog photography to be one of the components of the intellectual honesty of her work. She believes that digital photography, can take some of the photographic fact, given their almost endless possibilities of manipulation. Every fraction of a second contained in her photographs corresponds to a narrative in which words are not enough. It seems that her lens captures states of the soul. The irony is another of her peculiarities, present in most of her photographic work, even when the subject is apparently contrary. Several exhibitions in galleries and public spaces have attracted public attention, allowing expose her work abroad. She holds numerous awards and Grand Prize Winner obtained at prestigious competitions of international photography. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections, national and international.
