A voice levels poster for the classroom is a visual aid that helps students understand the appropriate volume level for various activities or situations within the classroom. It typically consists of illustrations or descriptions depicting different levels of noise or voice volume, along with corresponding examples or activities. Here's a breakdown of what you might find on a voice levels poster: Silent/Zero Voice Level: This level indicates absolute silence. Examples may include independent reading, individual work, or silent assessments. Illustrations might include a finger pressed to lips or a closed mouth with a "shhh" gesture. Whisper Voice Level: This level involves speaking in a very soft voice. Examples could be whispering to a partner during partner work, asking questions during quiet work time, or sharing quietly during group discussions. Illustrations may show two figures leaning in close to each other, speaking softly. Indoor Voice Level: This level represents speaking at a normal, conversational volume. It's appropriate for most classroom activities, such as discussions, small group work, or asking questions during lessons. Illustrations might depict two figures engaged in conversation at an appropriate distance from each other. Presentation Voice Level: This level involves speaking louder and clearer for presentations or group discussions where the speaker needs to be heard by the entire class. Examples include giving presentations, leading discussions, or participating in debates. Illustrations could show a figure standing confidently with arms outstretched as if addressing a group. Outdoor Voice Level: This level indicates speaking at a louder volume suitable for outdoor environments. It might be used for activities such as outdoor games, cheering, or participating in physical education classes. Illustrations may show children playing outside or engaging in physical activities. The purpose of a voice levels poster is to provide a visual reference for students to understand and self-regulate their volume levels in different classroom contexts. By referring to the poster, students can easily identify the appropriate voice level for the task at hand, promoting a positive and productive learning environment.

4th graders just finished a lesson about totem poles. Students learned about the significance of totem poles and that they were (and still are) made by native tribes who lived in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. The big word for this project was stylize. We learned that some artists stylize their work by changing shapes, colors, etc. in order to give their work their own personal touch. Each student created one stylized animal in the style of a real totem pole. (There are some great resources on totem pole parts online here. Unfortunately, I didn't find this until we were almost done with the project!) In the past, I had kids paint the finished product, but I decided to try collage this year after seeing an example from another blog last year. I really like how clean the collage is. More importantly, the students were more successful using collage. My lesson plan can be found here. My keynote for this lesson is here. A PDF version of my keynote can be downloaded here. Feel free to use or modify for your own room!
