The family immigrated west, finally settling with the Mormons in Utah. After two hundred years of pioneer legacy, one of the flock has returned to the east to roost in Brooklyn. The piers of Red Hook provide a daily break from my time in the studio. The Statue of Liberty is a hovering presence over the entire New York bay. Sarum Morris was formed in 1982. It is named after Sarum, the Roman settlement which through the centuries has become the City of Salisbury. Sarum Morris is a mixed Cotswold Morris side founded in 1982 and comprising of both men and women dancers and musicians. The dances they perform are from the Cotswold villages of Bampton in Oxfordshire, Ilmington in Warwickshire and Oddington in Gloucestershire, as performed and collected over 100 years ago. Salisbury has one of the oldest documented references to Morris dancing, dating back to 1564. The figure in the background is a modern replica of the Salisbury Giant, first recorded in 1496 when led by the Mayor and Corporation, it was carried in procession to meet King Henry VII and his Queen who were staying at nearby Clarendon Palace. The Giant would be accompanied by Hob-Nob, (a dragon) a beadle and two whifflers bearing mace, sword, and lantern, the Morris dancers, three black boys and the devil. All were dressed in clothes provided by the Taylors Guild. They would process through the City streets accompanied by great crowds. While the bearers of the giant refreshed themselves in a local hostelry, the Morris dancers became the centre of attraction, dancing to traditional tunes, three dressed as men in streamers and bells, three as women, and one as a fool.

(172094 bx27) Note: Albert Edward Sterner, an American painter, etcher, engraver, lithographer and illustrator, studied art at Birmingham and at the Julien Academy in Paris, under Gerome, Boulanger and Lefebvre. Born to American parents in England, Albert Edward Sterner moved permanently to New York in 1885. Sterner first established himself as a major painter and illustrator. Among other awards, his art won prestigious medals at the Paris Salon (1891), the Paris Exposition (1900) and at the Munich Exposition (1905). Albert Sterner was a full member of the American Water Color Society, the Lotus Club, the American Institute of Arts and Letters and of the National Academy of Design (1934). His original prints and paintings are included in the following international institutes; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the South Kensington Museum, London, the Kupferstich Kabinet, Munich, and the Royal Print Collection of Italy. Few American artists received as much acclaim throughout the world as Albert Sterner. Original printmaking first attracted Albert Sterner around 1910 when he made some experimental lithographs with the printer, Boulton Brown. This led him to create some fine, large posters during the First World War. The medium of drypoint engraving, with its characteristic deep and furrowed lines, became Sterner's primary means of artistic expression during the final twenty years of his life. Completely designed, engraved and printed by the artist, Sterner's drypoints were published by him in small, limited editions of twenty-five to fifty impressions. These original prints, with their strong design elements, immediately placed Sterner alongside Rockwell Kent and Lynd Ward as one of America's finest printmakers of the Art Deco era.
