One of the limitations of the Silhouette Studio program is that files designed in the program can only be saved in the proprietary .studio format. Since no other programs can open a .studio file, whatever designs that were created in Silhouette Studio can only be opened by the same software. So what happens if you had used the program to design for, say, an 11" x 17" sheet of paper but your printer can only print on letter-size papers? How can you export the design into a jpeg or a pdf so that you can have it printed at the office supply store? Today's tutorial was written by Shirley Swoope. By using multiple screenshots, Shirley will show you how you can use the Bullzip PDF printer to "save" your Silhouette Studio file into a jpeg, png, or even pdf for printing. You can download Bullzip HERE and Shirley's tutorial HERE. You can also find Shirley at her blog HERE. Thank you, Shirley for sharing your tutorial with us and thank you, Sandra Gerber for helping me reach out to Shirley.

Don't have the time to read? Listen to the audio transcript of this post: When I learned the ins and outs of tracing an image and turning it into an SVG file I felt I had opened a door into a new era of design.....in a good, legal way! Say what? Tracing someone else's photo is not original content and therefore illegal, isn't it? Yes and no. Tracing, when not done the right, legal way limits us as designers from learning, broadening and improving our design abilities. Trust me, if you are using this as the main method to design, I promise that you are not only limiting yourself but its apparent to others that it is not original. Let me clarify... I am NOT encouraging you to copy someone else’s work. This method I will teach you is meant to ENHANCE your design by giving you a starting point, a foundation, something to BUILD upon. Why this is important... If the cut file design is being used to create a shirt, decor or other item, the last thing you want is to have someone recognize the design as not being yours and report it to the owner. I've had personal experience with this. Someone had copied one of my designs and was actually reselling it to their customers. I contacted the company (now have a legal statement written up that I send them), but at the time I said something along the lines of this: I am the original designer of this item, you do not have my permission to use this. Please remove them from your store within 48 hours or the next time you hear from me will be through my legal attorney. Kind of serious business, but being a designer online these days you NEED to let them know you mean business! I encourage each of you to do the same so that all the hours you put into a design do not get copied and redistributed online and then all that hard work going down the drain. Don't waste time scouring the web for people copying your designs. Just have a process in place so that when it does happen, you know what to do and have statements, etc. on hand, ready to use. So back to it....you or the person using your design could get into some serious trouble for using a design illegally. Legal Versus Illegal What would be considered illegal? If you search an image in Google and trace the first image that pops up, you are more than likely using an image that is copyrighted! This is illegal. So is all hope lost? It doesn't make sense to spend hours and hours trying to make a little kitty cat by hand that is a minor part of your design. I am a design commerce business owner, I do not have time to making ALL my designs from scratch and I know you don't either. Profitable Business = Fast Design Time This is huge, especially if you are selling your designs like I am. The way more to make more money is by creating designs as fast as possible. There is a balance between good, quality designs and designs just thrown together. There's a point that if you spend too much time on a single design that makes it unprofitable, when you won't receive out of it what you put into it. Then there's designs that are too simple, too cheap (for lack of a better word) that won't appeal to your audience. So how do I leverage image trace legally? Well, there's three solutions I have found for this: Obtain written permission from the site owner Take your own photo with a camera and this to trace or Go through site that offers free commercial image use that also includes alterations. There is such a place my friends, its called Pexels.com and its completely free! (Just a side note, I am not affiliated with them, I just love them.) This is where I go for a foundation image when I am in need of a silhouette object, such as an animal or person. Many sites require some form of attribution, so you would have to mention them wherever the design is used. But with Pexels no attribution is required. Plus you are allowed to alter the photo in any way, trace and are allowed to sell the end product. This is huge and how I was able to build the car pictured below. I used an image of an old Volkswagen from Pexels.com, traced it by hand in AI using my Wacom graphics tablet, added the accents on the vehicle, free-handed the tree on top and this is the outcome. Pretty simple, right? So even though tracing images has a negative connotation, it actually can be used in a very good, legal way that can improve your design. Using images as the foundational shape for your design: Gives you a starting point which is especially beneficial when you are a beginner Saves you on design time so you can focus your skills on another more intricate or complicated part of the design. You now have the potential to create any shape imaginable - even if you're first starting out. In the end it's a win-win no matter how you look at it. In the video tutorial... I show you how to convert an image into an SVG. I walk you through how to trace the image that also has a background, I show you the advanced trace setting options, and the best way to use these to get a tight trace. I also show you how I manipulate the traced silhouette path of the horse to make it cutting machine friendly. I also provide a freebie that gives you the
I love my Silhouette Cameo but more so since I discovered how to turn any photo into a cutting file. This not only saves me money on buying designs from the Silhouette Store but also on creating unique personal designs. I find for cutting choosing designs with simple lines such as colouring pages works best, but you can also scan drawings or handwritten quotes. Download or scan picture and save as jpeg or similar file On Silhouette Studio go to 'File' and select 'Open' Go into the folder where your image is stored Go to 'Files of type' and select 'All Files'. Every file in that folder will now be shown Click on image and it will now appear on your Silhouette Studio page Select the 'Trace' tool its along the top menu on right hand side (the grey square with the blue and yellow shape on) and the trace menu will appear at the right hand side of page Click on 'Select Trace Area' and form area over your design Now click 'Trace' from the right hand menu, this will form a cutting outline of your design Use pointer curse to click on image and move to side of page, you will then be left with your cutting image and your original image as separate parts. Click on original image so that it is highlighted in a box and press delete button on keyboard You will now just be left with your cutting file You can now add this as your own design in your cutting library by selecting 'File', 'Save As' and then clicking 'Save to library...' This is now your own design to use as you do any other design on your Silhouette Tips I always zoom into my image before saving to my library to fine tune, you can delete, edit any lines that you may think are too fussy or smooth over design. You will also notice that in the trace menu there are other options such as trace outer edge, just have a play and see which works best with the design you want. I will be adding many more tutorials like this regarding Silhouette Cameo, I do as a step by step as I always found it difficult to keep up with the videos while I learning these techniques. Please leave me comments as to if you like these, or what future features you would like me to cover Loves ya Becky x
This tutorial shows you how to convert an SVG file to one that you can use with your Silhouette Cameo. I will be directing you to another blog, as well as showing you screenshots of the process on here. {FiRST} Search Pinterest for “free SVG” Click one that you like, and download it {SECOND} Before we go any further, locate your “Downloads” folder. ((To access mine, I simply click the folder on the task bar. On the left side menu, I find the Downloads folder and then find the SVG file. )) Find your SVG file, and right click it. Then click “Extract all”. When the dialog opens, click extract. Note: This particular design that I downloaded requires a password. It is located on the page where you originally downloaded the SVG from. Just enter it, and you are all set. Now in your downloads folder, there is a zipped file and an unzipped file. Go ahead and delete the zipped file. You don’t need it. Now we are going to move the SVG file for easier access. Click and drag it to the desktop for now. You can move the file to a different location later. {THiRD} Google “how to open svg in silhouette studio” and click the first link. Follow the directions on THIS blog. She gives a step by step tutorial on how to download the program you need to convert the file. Basically, here are the steps she describes: Download and Open Inkscape. (I do not have screen shots of how to download the program… it is pretty self- explanatory.) Once the program is open, click “File > Open” to locate your SVG that you just downloaded. It should be easy to locate right on the desktop. Then click “File> SAVE AS” And choose “Desktop Cutting Plotter” from the drop down menu and click save. A box will pop up, and you want to choose the box that says “use ROBO- master type of spline output” and click okay. Then you can exit Inkscape. (It might ask you to resave, but I just click exit without saving again.) {FOURTH} Open your Studio software library and also the SVG file on your desktop. Click and drag the file with the DXF extension into your library, and you are finished! Now you will be able to cut as usual.
