Masi, (also known as tapa, kapa, or barkcloth), is one of the oldest cultural art forms of Fiji. The tapa are prepared using a process of soaking and beating the inner bast of the paper mulberry and then pasting the pounded sheets together for length and strength. Each hand painted symbol has a meaning, and this traditional art form has been passed down from generation to generation. Each tapa is approximately 12" diameter, hand made in Fiji. Natural plant dyes are used to make the design. The texture of tapa is like thick cloth. Traditionally, tapa was framed or used for a wall hanging, table covering, or many other uses. Tapa are tear resistant, but can be cut up. Tapa are not water proof. If you would like to make the tapa water-resistant, scotch-guard or another water-proof protectant, like varnish, can be applied.
