Antoine-Louis Barye 1796-1875 French Le Général Bonaparte (The General Bonaparte in Egypt) Bronze with golden patina Signed "Barye" and "F Barbedienne Fondeur" on the base This masterpiece represents the General Bonaparte during the Campaign of Egypt in 1798. BARYE Antoine-Louis: Born September 24, 1796 in Paris; died on June 29, 1875 in Paris; Sculptor of allegorical subjects, figures, nudes, portraits, animals, painter, watercolourist, draftsman, romantic. He started at the age of 13 as an apprentice at a burner for military equipment, Fourrier, then at goldsmith Bicunais, which allowed him to acquire the technique of metal working. Between 1818 and 1824, he studied at the Beaux Arts in Paris. All his inspirations came from the Jardin des Plantes, a place he frequented regularly, to study and observe nature. In 1827 he participated in the Paris Salon. He expressed the romanticism of the 1830s by the staging of violent fights. It produced admiration and criticism at the Salon of 1831. He became one of the favorite sculptors of Napoleon III under whose reign he made monumental works, as for example "La Force", or "La Paix" (1854-1860) for the new Palais du Louvre. In 1868, he became a member of the Institute and knew ease and recognition during the last six years of his life.
