My installation, Overgrowth, which was constructed during my residency last summer at Contemporary Craft, is on display in Lake City, SC as a part of the Artfields competition. I drove up yesterday with my lovely assistant Lysa to install it in a really great space called Emerson Row. The shop is full of beautiful pieces selected and often refurbished by owner Emily Richardson. It was a great fit for Overgrowth, which grew down the brick walls and onto an antique hutch. Artfields is an art competition in Lake City, South Carolina, which runs from April 25th until May 4th. If you in the are stop by and check it out!
Now that Clay Week(s) has come to an end, it's back to business as usual in the art room. In order for all of my kids to work with clay at once, I have the kids "push the pause button" on whatever we are currently working on. That means, after clay week, we un-pause and resume what we left behind. For fourth grade, that meant our Stitched Monsters! Here is the lesson video I created for this project. Feel free to use in your art teacherin' town! Out of all the projects we have done this year, my kids have ranked this one very close to the top. Clay was a first place winner, of course, but it was a tight race. Many of my students have started sewing at home, bringing in their pillows, monsters and other creations. I remember when I was first introduced to hand sewing as a kid. It felt like a whole new world of creating was opened up to me. I think the kids are feeling the same. I really liked having the kids use Smart Fab for the body as this made it easy for them to see thru and insure they were "capturing" the arms and the legs of the monster as they stitched. Once the stitching was complete and the monster was flipped to the correct side, if they noticed that part of their arm or leg was not securely attached, the kids had to go back and restitch. This really taught them the importance of good, even stitches. Once flipped, the kids had to complete a sketch of their monster. This sheet asked them questions about their monsters to really get their creative juices flowing. Once the sketch was done, they were to slide a card into their monster, cut the shapes of the face and glue them down with tacky glue. The card inside made it so the monster would not be glued together. Not until the kids started stuffing their monsters did they really seem to understand that they were creating a stuffie. One told me he was going to go home, make a bunch and sell them. Right on, dude! I had many requests to take them home today...but I need them for the art show! Give me a month, y'all. Have y'all done stuffed monsters with your kids? I know there are may ways to go about making them. Earlier this year, one of my sweet students gave me a small stuffed monster with a rectangular body and dangling arms and legs. That look is what I based this pattern on. Learning to sew monsters this way taught my students how to properly pin, stitch and create a monster. I definitely think this is a lesson worth repeating! When life gives you yellow felt, make lemons! Supplies:Yellow and Green Felt Fiber fill Green thread and needle Pattern (you can enlarge the picture below or download it here) Using the pattern provided, cut the body of the lemon out of yellow felt and the stem/leaves of the lemon out of green felt. Start by arranging 2 pieces of the lemon body together. Using a sewing machine, sew down one side of the pieces you have arranged together. Make sure to leave ¼ of an inch open from the top. It will look like this... Continue arranging the pieces of lemon body together, sewing each new side together. Conclude by sewing the last sides together, closing the lemon {leaving a 1/4 of an inch open at the top of the lemon}. When all sides have been sewn together... carefully pull the bottom of the lemon through 1/4 inch opening, turning your lemon right side out. Generously stuff your lemon with fiberfill. Grab your stem/leaves, the sewn and stuffed body of the lemon and green thread and needle. Using the green thread, sew the top of your lemon closed. This will be covered with the stem/leaves, so the green stitches will not show and does not need to look perfect. Tact down the stem of leaves. Continue sewing around the entire stem, pulling the thread to give a knob shape, like you have on the bottom of your lemon. Pull the needle up through the center of the stem. Make a thick French knot. This provides no real purpose other than visual. Using the same needle and thread, pull the needle back into the French knot and re-emerge the needle down the center of one of the leaves. Embroider up the center of the leaf, attaching it with each stitch to the body of the lemon. With each new embroidery stitch, pull your thread tight. This will pull the sides of your leaves up, giving it more shape. Repeat these steps for the remaining leaf. Now that it's done, I give you my you'll love these lemons. Welcome Dawn to Saori Santa Cruz designing and sewing clothing class! Lets look at how this progression class went from hand woven cloth to jacket Here is Dawn's happy hand woven fabric she wove Saori style and brought to class in her luggage from Canada . I had the studio all ready for cutting and sewing and trying on…. Dozens of muslins to try and finished garments as well for ideas….. Dawn confess that in her soaking stage of her finished cloth she some how felted part of it . …. you can see ruching and textures and narrowing widths varying . But this is Saori! not to be deterred . I told her " We will work with what we have and use the textures as design elements!" Trying muslins and , and then trying on my finished pieces . Dawn especially kept going back to one design, a jacket I designed. although there were vests and tunics that she loved as well. I helped her with her decision by seeing if she had enough yardage to make the jacket style she wanted. She watch as i layed out and showed her oprtions for piecing. she helped with her own esthetics to where she liked pieces placed but the goal is not to over think this process to much ever! The magic happens by trusting in your true self. Ok deep breath… lets cut!!! we really just had barely just enough fabric to make the jacket but we made it work! ….and sew and piece and re cut and CUT some more and SEW and PIECE some more NOW she is basting the main pieces of the jacket together to try on and see if it fits etc "I am going to love it" So I said , " it fits great! so lets sew it up now!! It is a beautiful spring day here in northern california lets move the sewing machine out side to sew your jacket after lunch" ….. and sew we did! In the mid 70's in February BLISS!!! the try on……... It is getting late but the jacket is almost done!!! Lets keep going …... Now back into the studio to press for hems and sleeves and ... Back outside to sew more and to secure all the seams on the jacket's inside. NOW FOR THE FINAL PRESSING!!! Dawn has her beautiful amazing jacket to wear tomorrow to the airport and to her next American art journey ! "I love it Jill, I learned so much" …. and I love it it to bits too ! don't you?
