Today's quiet book is fantastic. It is seriously so cute, so well made, and looks so fun. Made by Marci of the blog If These Walls Could Speak, this book has so many awesome pages. It has a painter's palette with colors to match, a shape matching page with a ton of shapes, a camping page with an adorable tent, little finger puppets in sleeping bags, and stars and a moon that are snap on/off, a lion ribbon page, a mailbox with envelopes whose stamps velcro on and off and felt "letters" inside, a puzzle page with three amazing puzzles, a Mr. Potato Head page with awesome accessories, a colorful caterpillar page, a shoe-lacing page, a car and traffic page with velcro road signs, a laundry line page with matching socks, a build-a-snowman page with two snowman and accessories, and a Christmas tree with a lace-up ribbon and tree decorations that snap on and off. I love this book. It is so cute and every page is packed with fun activities. I love all the details, like the little stars on the camping page that snap on and off, and the stamps on the letters, and the banners on the cover, and the little finger puppets in their sleeping bags. I'm definitely inspired by this book, and I hope you will be too! Enjoy! Interview What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. I'm Marci. I'm a wife, blogger, DIY-er and stay-at-home mama to 2 boys! Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? I originally made it for my son, Jack, who was 17 months at the time we gifted it to him on Christmas Eve. However, it's intended to be played with by our younger boy as well and any other future children! What's your level of sewing experience? Somewhere between beginner and intermediate. I've done a lot of sewing projects but I prefer to stick with "small" projects like this quiet book, bow ties, etc. I'm also terrible at following patterns - I pretty much wing everything I do. How long did it take you? About 5 months of working on it off and on during nap time. I would say each page took an average of 5 hours so total time was probably around 80 hours. Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? I used the Mr. Potato Head template from this blog but for everything else I looked at pages on Pinterest and then created it myself without patterns. How did you bind your quiet book? I used three grommets per page and intended to hold the book together with D rings but I haven't yet found any big enough so it's currently held together by ribbons threaded through the grommets. What material are the pages made out of? Felt. What other materials did you use? Snaps, velcro, sequins, grommets, ribbons, buttons, zipper, shoelaces, mini clothespins. How much did all the supplies cost you? I had a lot of supplies on hand already but I probably spent somewhere between $30-$40 on items I didn't already have. What's your favorite page? Why? I think I love the tent/camping page the most just because it's so interactive! The star/moon snaps, the zip, and the finger puppets all make it a really fun page! It's also one of the few pages that has something unique I hadn't seen somewhere else first (the finger puppets in sleeping bags inside the tent). I made this quiet book for my little man who is turning two. What's your level of sewing experience? I have been sewing for many years, but each pattern includes about 25 pages of instructions with lots of pictures so that people with very limited sewing experience can complete the pages. Pattern and instructions for sale here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/candidlykate How did you bind your quiet book? I use a unique idea that allows you to keep the pages all together without permanently binding them using overall clips that come from the back page around to the front. That way you can grab only a few pages if you wish OR pass different pages out to different children. What material are the pages made out of? Felt. What other materials did you use? Snaps, magnets, buttons, mirror, ribbon, and a variety of other materials. How much did all the supplies cost you? Many of the supplies can be found in your stash but the total cost for all supplies is probably around $40 to make the whole book with no coupons used. What's your favorite page? Why? Adam and Eve. Describe yourself in one sentence. Kerry Lee-Crawford - The woman who LOVES to share, create and grow. Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? I made this book twice at the same time for my twin step-daughters for their 7th Birthday in August 2015. What's your level of sewing experience? Advanced, I am actually a textile artist and have sewn since I was a child. I have my Visual Arts diploma, major in Textiles from the Alberta College of Art and Design, and I also have a BA in Art Education. How long did it take you? These books took me a few months, and I didn't work steady at them. I began in June 2015 and worked on them at my own pace. No idea how many hours....many, many days though. Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? For some of my pages I used other templates, like the Armour of God and I took the idea of the missionary tie and created my own patterns from what I saw. Other pages I created myself by finding LDS clip art or by looking at primary lesson pages to get ideas for the Repentance and Priesthood pages. I sketched everything else out first, then I went to work. I found many of my clip art online from various places. How did you bind your quiet book? I wanted to have a stable and well sewn book that would last a long time. I created each page on its own, then I sewed pages to each other leaving the left side open. I used pinking sheer scissors to trim around the sewn pages. I then used a colour strip of fabric to sew both set of pages together leaving a wide enough space to be sewn down the middle of the spine. I just like the look and feel of it. I explain this more in detail on my blog. What material are the pages made out of? Each page is made of either denim or upholstery fabric. I wanted each page to be thicker than just regular fabric, so it would hold up as the girls turned the pages. I could have used interfacing on the back of fabric, but I had a lot of denim and upholstery fabric and I wanted to get rid of it. Waste not, want not. What other materials did you use? I LOVE my fine tipped black fabric pen. It was very versatile and saved me lots of time and headaches. I also used fabric, applique fusible webbing, freezer paper, yarn, snaps, and velcro...oh...and let's not forget real pink blush, yup...you read right! (for the cheeks!!) How much did all the supplies cost you? I already had much of my supplies in my studio. I think I only had to buy the snaps and yarn...maybe $20?? What's your favourite page? Why? There are so many that I like, but I'm really impressed how the girl head with brown hair turned out. I found a silhouette picture of a girl online and used it as the base. I wanted it to look like a beautiful girl and so I added my special touches with my fabric pen and cheek blush, as well as the lace collar and pretty button for the broach. I wanted real thick hair too, so I doubled the yarn. Needless to say....it's the girls' favourite page too!!! I have to remind them there are other pages as well! Kerry has a post on her blog, Quiet Book - Show & Tell, where she talks more in detail about each page and links to the templates she used. Check it out! If you're planning a trip with your toddler or even just headed to church on Sunday, you might be interested in creating a DIY quiet book to take with you. Quiet books can keep your child busy and quiet for hours! If you have a family of young kids, you know very well the hair-pulling stress of trying to keep them quiet for a given amount of time where you're among other adults also trying to keep their focus, whether this be at church, in a meeting, or on an airplane. My mom put together quiet books for me when
A lot of the younger couples at my church wanted to do quiet books. I know they were thinking cute felt activity books but there was no way we would have the time to finish even a page. I have made one. They take FOREVER! Searching on pinterest I came across these really cute pages from this company. Finch Family and Games. They have so many activity pages to put in a quiet book. The colored ones cost $1 to buy so I bought 5 different ones. It was hard to narrow it down to that. They are made to put in folders but I liked them in binders inside sheet protectors. I got some magnets from JoAnns and put them on the back paper under the sheet protector and then on the back of the laminated cut outs. They stick pretty well as long as you get the thicker magnets. Not the thin kind. I did a few extra things in my own binder for my girls and nephew who will be getting one of these in the mail for Christmas(shhh, don't tell him MW) I added a place to hold all the little cut outs. And then for my daughter I added a few coloring pages. I turned pictures I had taken into black and white sketch pictures and put them in a sheet protector. They she can use white board markers or white board crayons to color on top of the sheet protector and wipe off.
