Since we haven't been able to have quilt guild meetings, a small group of us, after getting our vaccinations, started to meet at each others houses. As a hostess gift, I started making spool pin doilies during our meet ups. Since we all sew, I figured these would be great gifts and so far, well received. I usually just free hand a pattern while I'm there to make it more special to the person I'm giving it to. Recently, we went to a fellow guild member's home, Pam. Her home is so decorative! Throughout, it's adorned with pumpkins in some craft form. Quilts, quilted wall hangings, paintings, small felted accent pillows and so on. And I am a huge pumpkin lover! But, for Pam, and a fellow pumpkin lover, she didn't get a spool pin doily. I ordered some new crochet thread and got to work as soon as I received it. And here it is! This pattern is circular but worked in rows instead of rounds. It starts with green for the pumpkin top and then change to pumpkin. This is made with Aunt Lydia's #10 crochet thread. I used a size 8 steel crochet hook for the pattern. I also finished two different doilies with different borders which are also in the pattern. These can be made in less than 20 minutes and a great gift for anyone who uses a sewing machine or just as adorable on your own machine! This is my original work. You may use for personal use, gifting or to make and sell. Please give proper credit for this and do not resell this pattern. Please do reach out to me for any questions or help. I hope you enjoy this pattern! Thanks so much and enjoy! Pat and Cori Knots, Frogs and Stitches

I've been crocheting spool pin doilies for my vintage Singer sewing machines. These little doilies are quick to make and do a good job of replacing the felt pads that are normally used. eta: The pad (or doily) keeps the thread spool stable so it doesn't jerk when you start sewing which causes the thread to wrap around the pin and break. This one is the really dark purple from the first picture, but I had to use the flash on my camera, and poof - it washed the color out. I'm a throwback from another era, methinks. Give me these any day instead of those felt disks like the one in the center here. This gold crochet thread from JoAnn's has a metallic strand in the twist looks good on these old black machines. I made these 2 to 21/2 inches in diameter. If you'd like to crochet a spool pin doily for your own vintage sewing machine here's the pattern I came up with for the blue one. Blue Hydrangea Spool Pin Doily Materials: No. 5 crochet thread 2.25mm crochet hook (or whatever size you like to use with crochet thread) Ch 5, slip st tog to form ring. Round 1. The JCS 2015 Ornament Preview issue arrived, and I was immediately drawn to "Peace" by Cathy Haberman of Hands On Design. It was shown in the chalkboard style that she has popularized lately, but my eyes just can't take stitching on black. I hoped that doing it on a blue fabric would work out and I do like the result. The photos are a bit blurry... rainy days and I kept missing my opportunities when the sun came out. I think it makes a cute holiday card with the rick-rack trim and a couple of sequins. The sequins are actually to hide my mistake in cutting the window... necessity and the mother of invention you know. I'm still on my quest to find the best way to finish the 6" ruler sleeve. I stitched another of Vavi's 'long' alphabets, "ABC Romantique" on Edingburgh dirty linen. This time I did not do a full lining, but used iron-on interfacing to back the stitching. The border fabric is doubled. I folded in a seam allowance on each side, then folded up from the bottom and used a blanket stitch to sew the side seams. Blanket stitch is really hard to do nicely so that the back looks as good as the front. I never seemed to get the hang of piercing the fabric at an exact 90 degree angle. Now I understand why quilters don't usually go for the 'stab' method that x-stitchers use. I also tried another one with just plain fabric and a quilt type binding. I added a crochet motif for interest. Not sure I like that one either. I think I may be giving up on this type of project. Sandy of San-Man Originals discovered a vintage item that crocheters use to make, something called a spool pin doily. These are used on old sewing machines as a decorative replacement for a circular felt pad that sits under the top spool of thread for stabilization purposes I guess. Here's a photo of one that is currently on sale on Etsy . Sandy was planning to make one for her old Singer treadle machine, but it looked like something quick and fun to do so I made three and sent them to her. Such cute little things. They are each about 2.5" in diameter. The first came from a flower pattern at this link: Kimberly's Coaster Patterns I used crochet cotton doubled (I had a ball of thread that came that way already) and a size 6 steel hook. That made the hole about the right size. It's 2.5" in diameter. This was an old motif from my stash. I think the pattern was from the "Harmony Guide to Crochet". The final one is the Dahlia Circle from the book "25 Floral Blocks to Crochet":

Six-Pointed Crocheted Spool Doily for Vintage Sewing Machines The Singer Treadle Machine, made in 1924 I have always wanted one of the 'old' sewing machines; the beautiful wood cabinets always appealed to me. My grandmother has one, and I watched my mom claim it as hers once my grandmother was ready to pass it on. (My mom found a sheet of paper, wrote her name on it, and stuffed it inside the cabinet.) Knowing I would not be getting my grandmother's machine, I have always looked for an old machine for myself. Still had the owner's manual and a few of the feet My late Mother-in-Law, Antonia Lourdes Chavez, 83, of Santa Rita, New Mexico, had talked about giving me her Mother's treadle sewing machine. She had told me how much work was needed to make it look nice. Since I was more worried about her health then, I didn't press much for what needed fixing, when the last time she used it was, if she used it at all... I had no idea when I would get the machine, but I was excited. As time passed, I really do wish I could have gotten more history from her, but her health never improved. Well, my Brother-in-Law has been cleaning his house and finally happened upon the machine Mom wanted to give me. He said, "I've got it loaded, I'm coming over on Wednesday!" Oh! The ANTICIPATION!!! I couldn't stand it! I joined some vintage sewing machine facebook groups, I did research on how to use the machines, I showed the grainy photo to my friends, "Lookit! Look at it!" I was excited! My friend was talking about what she had to do to fix her machine, and she had always mentioned that she wanted a spool thread doily. What!?!? I had never heard of them! I know some machines use felt, and the 'old' ones used red felt, but a Doily? Well, now I had to have one. And why not? I needed to pass the time until my machine arrived!!! I found a pattern online for a flower doily, but it had eight rounded petals, which didn't fit my style... I tested her pattern and made a second one using a six-pointed petal, hexagonal style. Hopefully, I can share my love with others... sl st - slip stitch ch - chain sc - single crochet hdc - half double crochet dc - double crochet ( ) # times - repeat what is in the parentheses. Instead of the red felt, use one of these handmade spool pin doilies to prevent your thread spool from marring the finish of your spool pin cover plate. Large enough to notice the sweet detail, but small enough to not be overwhelming. For those who crochet, there are all sorts of various patterns and ideas for creating your own, but for those who cannot crochet, or have time constraints, then we offer these lovely Spool Pin Doilies for you to use or give as gifts. (Great stocking stuffer or secret sister idea!) Be sure to watch the video on how to apply the spool pin doily to your machine.
Round 1. Ch 4 (serves as first dc and ch1), *dc in ring, ch 1, repeat from * until there are 12 dc, slip st in 3rd ch of beg dc. (12 dc) Round 2. Slip st to ch after first dc, *ch 4, slip st in next ch, repeat from * to end of round, slip st in ch space beside beg ch. (12 loops) Round 3. Slip st to middle of first ch loop, *ch 4, slip st in next loop, repeat from * to end. 12 loops Round 4. Slip st in loop, *sc 4 in next loop, repeat from * to end. Not only is it decorative, but it serves a purpose, too... The soft fabric of the mini Dresden Spool Pin Plate prevents the thread spool from touching and scratching the machine's surface as the spool spins round and round. EXCLUSIVE PRE-CUT DRESDEN SPOOL PIN KIT INCLUDES: Pre-cut and diecut fabric pieces - hand-selected from various fabrics and prints we have on hand. All pieces are ready to sew together! Each kit is unique, specially curated by our staff from various fabrics we carry - Moda, Riley Blake, Penny Rose, Lecien, Yuwa, Robert Kaufman, and more! All pieces are pre-cut and diecut for you to make 1 Mini Dresden Spool Pin Plate. A professionally printed, full-color pattern to walk you through construction step-by-step. Eyelet cam or Buttonholer Attachment are not included. Don't forget to watch the video tutorial for how to make an eyelet hole using a vintage Singer Buttonholer Attachment on your Featherweight 221 or 222. If you do not have a Buttonholer or eyelet cam to fit your Featherweight, or if you do not have a built-in eyelet function in your newer, modern machines that you can use, then there are many creative options for your center hole creation. Otherwise, follow the image links above for a tutorial and ordering information. Note: The backside of the Mini Dresden Spool Pin Plate is purposely left unfinished because of it's tiny size. This also accommodates the center hole to be made more easily, and the softness of just the Dresden pieces allows it to conform and lay more flush with the spool pin plate... And, it will always be seen right side up. We've had our plates on our machines for years and they stay looking beautiful. However, feel free to be creative if you wish to add a backing. We've seen some customers use felt, leather, other fabric, etc... Just remember to accommodate the center hole for the spool pin! Have fun!
