With her latest book, former 'New York Times' fashion critic Cathy Horyn aims to write illustrator Joe Eula back into 20th century fashion history.
“... Politics aside, It seemed logical to me that Claire would do in the 18th century the same thing that Christian Dior had done in the 20th century. He stripped the traditional 18th century riding…
The 20th century saw changes to fashion in ways never before seen. Take a look at an overview of the 10 decades that changed the way we look at fashion and why these changes occurred.
This is the amazing photograph of young Californian school girl Norma Jeane Baker taken in 1941, four years before she transformed into international superstar Marilyn Monroe.
These hand-sewn padded leather goggles are modeled after early 20th century riding gear. Lenses are high definition, nondistortive, scratch resistant, 100% UVA/UVB polycarbonate for perfect visibility in all conditions. The Streetfighter is designed to be used over a helmet thanks to the adjustable fork where the elastic band is mounted. Separated frames assure perfect adjustability to fit all faces. The air intakes in the frame are positioned for maximum ventilation. High quality polycarbonate anti-fog lenses ensure perfect visibility in all weather conditions. These goggles also fold easily into a pocket. Made in Italy. Sunglasses may look cool, but anyone who rides will tell you that biker eyewear is critical to the safety and enjoyment of the ride.

One of the most iconic and sought after designs of the 20th Century, the collaborations between Bernard Villemot and Bally showcase the crossover between advertisement and fine art. The luxury Swiss shoemaker worked with the celebrated poster artist Villemot on a very limited number of designs for the brand from the 1960s to 80s. Known for his minimalist Art Deco aesthetic, his works for the likes of Bally, Orangina, Perrier and Air France are among the most influential and sought after pieces of advertising history. This design known as "Shoes" features the entangled legs & feet of a heeled figure raising a foot, and a flat shoed & trousered figure behind. The fun and suggestive illustration using a vibrant and varied colour palette against the wide black background is typical of Villemot in this era. less

Almost four decades after her death, Peggy Guggenheim is the central figure in a continuing art-world imbroglio: the seemingly endless legal battle by some of her descendants over her superlative 20th-century art collection—and the Venetian palazzo housing it—she left to her uncle’s foundation. Have Guggenheim’s wishes been ignored and her legacy desecrated?
It’s easy enough to get Art Nouveau and Art Deco confused, probably owing to the fact that they both start with ‘art’. But Art Nouveau and Art Deco are actually two very distinct design movements, with very distinct looks, that appeared around the turn of the 20th century. After perusing this brief disambiguation, you may not be an expert on design history — but you can casually drop these two descriptors into conversations, and your friends are sure to be impressed.
New medical findings suggest the iconic singer may NOT have died from overeating or overdosing on drugs
Probably the most iconic paper doll book of the mid 20th century, this set is still highly sought after by collectors today. As it was produced by Merrill in 1955 my mother must have bought it before I was born, at least 10 years before I was old enough to play with it. I can remember it from early childhood, a magical representation of every little girl's dream wedding. I named the dolls after the people who made up my world - the bride was called Molly after my mom and I truly believed she was modelled on her. (I included a photo of my mother on her wedding day in the post on Mervyn Suart.)

Parties, premieres, and galas: Fall is in full swing, and so are the world’s most stylish in dramatic looks that run the gamut from old school to what’s next. In London, Adwoa Aboah channeled a modern-day Marilyn Monroe in Miu Miu’s bejeweled pink satin halter dress, cunningly paired with Prada’s orange sandals. In New York, Emma Stone lit up the Maniac premiere in “lampshade” Givenchy, while in Madrid, Queen Letizia of Spain was a thoroughly modern monarch in Pedro del Hierro’s midnight blue jumpsuit. At the Mercury Prize (yes, back in the U.K.), Jorja Smith wore decidedly grown-up fringe by Jean Paul Gaultier. And in Los Angeles, it was Jessica Biel who proved that fashion lightning can strike twice—first, on the red carpet at the Emmys in cloud-like Ralph & Russo Couture, and then swapping it for a neon chartreuse, neo-Grecian dress to carry on late into the night.
