Sedum (Stonecrop) is an easy to grow group of succulents that look great in the summer and autumn garden.

Perennial violas look a lot like their cousins, pansies. But, perennial violas offer the benefit of coming back year after year, adding early-season color to the garden, as well as lots of curb appeal first thing in the season when relatively few other plants bloom. Perennial violas bloom in a wide range of colors, and have a soft, old-fashioned feel that makes them ideal for use in cottage gardens. Because these spring flowers are low growing, they're excellent choices for the front of the border or lining walkways and sidewalks. Hardiness varies by variety; if you live in an especially cold-winter area, be sure to check the hardiness before planting.
The humble gazania, that kaleidoscopic daisy from South Africa overused in years past as the go-to municipal ground cover, is undergoing a minor local revival. I included a few for this summer in m…

Epimedium 'Pink Champagne' is one of the finest epimediums to ever hit the market from the hand of breeder Darrell Probst. The long, tapered, evergreen leaves are heavily speckled with large, dark purple blotches. Starting in early April, the 2' tall x 3' wide clumps of Epimedium 'Pink Champagne' are laden with 15" long floral spikes, each dripping with flowers composed of large white spurs attached to a dramatic raspberry cup. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner is simply superb!
A highly prized and often difficult-to-locate cultivar, 'Praying Hands' is the Hosta lover's holy grail. There is simply no other Hosta like it, with its unique tightly folded, upraised, golden-edged foliage. Heavily rippled with faint vertical gold accents echoing the golden margins, the leaves really do suggest hands at prayer. Instead of opening outward from the top of their stems, these leaves point straight up, narrow and inturned. Dark green and deeply corrugated, the foliage sports a pencil-thin edge that accentuates the heavy rippling of the leaves. The vertical veining on each leaf also bears golden highlights, giving the foliage a corrugated look that is most attractive. Reaching 14 inches high and about 18 inches wide, 'Praying Hands' is a stunning sight in the partly shaded garden or container. Midsummer blooms of lavender arise on long, slender stalks, but are insignificant enough to snip off -- the foliage display is simply too impressive for distractions! 'Praying Hands' was introduced by Gerald Williams in 1996. It makes a fine companion to other Hosta cultivars, particularly those with wide, outspread leaves.
