I took these photos at Ólavsøka on 29 July 2009, and now it is a year ago and tomorrow is Ólavsøka again. Ólavsøka has a very long traditition in the Faroe Islands. It has been celabrated for many years. It is called Ólavsøka because it was in memory of Saint Olav of Norway, who died in Stiklastad in Norway. Forleden aften snakkede jeg om, at jeg i lang tid har ønsket mig den færøske strikkebog Føroysk Bindingarmynstur, hvorpå min mor fluks rejste sig fra sofaen, gik over til reolen og hentede en bog, og gav den til mig. Jeg anede ikke, at hun havde bogen. Oprindelig var den heller ikke hendes. Den tilhørte min farmor, som døde sidste år. Nu er bogen min. Tusind tak! Bogen ser ikke ud af meget udenpå, men indeni er en samling traditionelle færøske strikkemønstre til tofarvet strik. Nogle af mønstrene er illustreret i farver, andre i sort/hvid. Jeg genkender mange af mønstrene fra flotte trøjer og andet strik, som jeg har set på Færøerne. Min udgave af bogen er fra 1986. Den er fjerde udgave. Jeg mener, der er kommet flere udgaver siden denne. Bogen er vældig populær blandt strikkende færinge. Og jeg kan sagtens anbefale den til andre også. Selv glæder jeg mig til at blive inspireret af bogen. Det klør i fingrene efter at gå i gang med noget farvet mønsterstrik.

This is a pattern for a top-down, Faroese-shaped shawl that can be knitted in a variety of yarns – from lace weight to worsted or even heavier. It has the Faroese shoulder shaping so that it does not ‘ride up’ in the neck and sits firmly on the shoulders, and the wings are long enough that they can be bound in the back to make it an utilitarian shawl. For the first Kevät with 7 center leaves, I used 188 g of 100% silk noil yarn on cone, light fingering weight 3-ply (1900 y/pound), which should be 6.63 oz, which could, should, or might be the equivalent of 790 yards or thereabouts. A quirkily sweet sweater for the little folks in your life, Mini Sólja is knitted in DK weight yarn from the bottom up. It incorporates an easy eyelet lace body leading into a stranded colourwork yoke inspired by the vibrant embroidered necklines of Guatemalan and Mexican huipil and the slightly more subdued yokes of 1960s Fair Isle cardigans. Corrugated ribbing at the hem and cuffs give you additional opportunity to play with colours children look so good in. Sólja gets its name from the Faroese national flower, the yellow marsh marigold, which heralds the arrival of spring. Indeed it was my quest for the perfect yellow which led me to knitting this sweater in Navia, a yarn from the Faroe Islands. This pattern first appeared in adult sizes only in PomPom Quarterly, Issue 8, in Spring 2014 and is now available as an individual pattern.
