It has been a long, long wait from the start of my Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt, and you have stuck with me the whole way. Now, after weeks and weeks of nothing but individual blocks, I'm so excited (so, so excited) to show you the finished quilt top (minus the borders). Please excuse all the pictures. There are alot of them! My design wall (aka - a plastic picnic tablecloth) worked great and kept the un-sewn blocks from being tramped on through this process. I set the blocks on point, and used little squares of printed fabrics for the cornerstones, while using a creamy white for the sashings. I haven't decided what fabrics to use for the borders, so for now I just love to stare at it, in all of it's creamy, colorful goodness! If you haven't done so yet, you really ought to give this one a try! Here's an easier way to piece this block. Start by making a center 4-patch surrounded by 4 loose triangles as shown in book. (My block is made with a solid center square, not a 4-patch) This center unit is referred to as a 'Square in a Square' On each template #44 and each of the large triangles, mark an X a quarter inch in from both edges on the wrong side of the fabric. This identifies the seam allowance when sewing the units together with a Y~Seam. Set this aside for now. Next, make 8 half square triangles. (hst) Using the hst's, create 'Unit One' shown below. Repeat for a total of 4. With the remaining 4 hst's, make 'Unit Two' shown below. Repeat 4 times. Line up Units One and Two together as shown below and sew them together. Repeat for a total of 4. After sewing Units One and Two together, add in the brown template #44. Finger press to determine the center of the pieced unit and the template. Pin and sew together. Repeat for a total of 4 Using the y~seam method, line up an X on one side of the template with the X on the triangle. Begin sewing the units together at the X stopping at the opposite X. You may want to take a small back stitch when you start and stop at the X's. Do this with all 4 sides of the center 'Square in a Square'. Complete the block by sewing up the open corner seams. For more detail on how to sew together y~seams, view this great tutorial on Craftsy...click HERE

Yep, I was farming this weekend. I was so busy basting that I did not get to farm for Friday. Now, before I show you my blocks for this week, I will like to tell you about a giveaway! I have spoken several times how without the classes, tips and techniques from Karen at Laugh yourself into Stitches, I would never have been able to make these blocks. Karen is having a huge giveaway! Not, one, or two or even three, but SIX months of her Farmer's Wife Revival Class!!! all details can be found HERE Wow, that is a great giveaway, head on over! Now for my blocks. This one, yucky, not enough contrast, bummer.. #98 Waterwheel #75 Rosebud #85 Square Dance And my favorite for this week.... #64 Peach and Pleny Happy Sewing!
It's so hot today (39c or 102f) - a perfect day to stay inside and sew. I did just that, and completed the next Farmers Wife block. Block 27 - Darting Birds Once again I used my 1" thangles - they really make small HST's easy. And even though the block in the book is made up of only two fabrics, I've been trying wherever I can to use all four. I did some calculations - now that I've made 27 blocks - once I'm 3/4 the way through piecing the next block, I will have sewn one quarter of the total number of blocks! Yay! While I've been sewing, DH has been busy servicing my new minty featherweight - we've no idea how long it has been since her last grease and lube, so I didn't want to put her thru her paces until I was perfectly sure she'd be fine. Marty is a qualified Electrician and Technician, so I trust him to work on all my machines entirely. I've been lazy getting a transformer though, so I'll still have to be a little patient before I can start sewing with her :-) And some advance notice - I'm going to be selling one of my black featherweights - so if you're in the market for one (and in Australia) you may want to let me know. This is the one I'm selling (it's not a great picture - I'll get more when I'm ready to list it): This machine is in wonderful condition and comes with a box, manual and an assortment of accessories. It has lovely gold work, and if memory serves me correctly, it's from 1949 (and it's 220-240v). First of all though, Marty is going to go over it completely and make sure it's electrically sound and ready to sew. While I made sure it ran when I purchased it, I have never actually sewn with it. So, if you're in the market, give me a little time, and it could be yours! Chatter soon! xox
It has been a crazy few weeks around our home, so Farming was put on the back burner. But today I took out the rake and shovel and got back in the dirt. Today's crop... #28 Duck and Ducklings #30 End of Day #49 Honeycomb #66 Periwinkle #74 Ribbons My favorite from this crop is #30, I love that little bee! Happy Sewing!

I can't decide if I like this pattern better or the other Friendship block better. I definitely like the way this one turned out with the parrots acting like the stars that they are! :)
