We did parables of Jesus this year for Vacation Bible School. Linda and Paula taught the 4 and 5 year old classes. They have permitted me to share photos of their classroom with you. This is decoration ideas only. But, the decorations are perfect for this age group! The first night was The Great Feast. This is a great idea to let the kids sit around the table and talk about The Great Feast! We also had the lesson on The Lost Coin. This is a really cute corner that looks like the inside of a Bible home. We also taught The Prodigal Son. I love this! They had nice moveable cardboard people that they added to finish the scenes, but since I was teaching my own class, I wasn't able to get the final pictures to share. The last photo is for The Good Samaritan. I decided to post this photo, even though it doesn't have the people in it. The church VBS resource room has a LOT of sheets and tarps painted with scenes. Awesome, because you can use them over and over again! This is one of them!
Sometimes you just need a faux picket fence! As I was setting up my trial beverage/hor'dourve table for Easter, I realized that it was missing something. Something light in color to lighten up the brick chimney. White to match the serving tray. Picket fences are white! I grabbed an extra box from the garage and positioned it to where the fence would go to make sure it was the right height. Ben is my go-to guy for all things involving cardboard, he quickly cut the verticle pieces out of the box. Then he cut the corners off of one side of each rectangle to make the tips of the pickets at the top. The edge of the box cut down nicely to make the supporting rails. We then hot-glued it all together and tested it in place to make sure we liked the height. Last but not least the paint. All picket fences are white, right? Well we went with the stereo type and painted it white... It was just the right thing for the backdrop of our Easter beverage table! What is your secret for decorating the beverage/food table? I'm always looking for clever ideas!
Vacation Bible School 2010! "Joseph's Journey: From Prison to Palace" was our theme this year. The church was turned into EGPYT for the children by the amazing vision and dedication of our Faith Formation Minister of Children's Education, Rit Vogel. She is so awesome at bringing an idea to fruition and making it meaningful, purposeful, and Biblical! Welcome to Egypt! Shiny gold paint is awesome! The custodians loved us...sand on the floor! "Hip, Hip, Hip, Hippopotamus... Hip, hip, hooray, God Loves VBS!" Rit found the design, traced it onto a mural, and a bunch of us painted it. See what I mean about bringing an idea to life!? Too cool. Yet another amazingly colorful mural! DUCK! (where?) In the photo! Apparently, dead ducks were common in Egypt. Didn't know that. Do you like my grapes? Too bad you can't see the tri-color depth I added. Yum. The kiddos got to walk under this upon entering the Great Hall! Welcome to Egypt! Two of the many Egyptian gods. We taught the kids lots about how Egyptians believed in many gods, yet Joseph believed in the ONE true God! Cellophane + fan + light = FIRE! Only because we all adore Rit is a photo of a sn*** on this blog. She worked so hard to bring this multi-layered, slithering beast to life! Being the Celebration Leader certainly had its perks: check out my bling! ...and my headpiece... ...and the eye make-up! Ta-da! Brenda-patra in Egypt! The Marketplace: PVC pipe holding up all these colorful pieces of fabric to create an open-marketplace feel. Different stations, including basket-weaving, jewelry, hieroglyphics, etc. VBS rocks. All the adults and teen leaders were dressed up, too! Check out the urns! A water bottle fits inside! One of our blankets for the Operation Kid to Kid, where blankets were tied and will be sent to children in Africa. The Music Room was a vineyard this year. Minus the wine, of course. Hanging grapes and all! "...there will never be another..." "You are the One True God..." "...You raise me high and lift me up..." So sad this is blurry, but so happy to be dancing with Brooke! Each day, four characters explained what we were learning about for the day. Bible verses, lessons, and the main point. The 5 days included: hope, special abilities, wisdom, forgiveness, and family. You can also see our pyramid of God Sightings, where the kids used bricks to list places where they had seen God throughout their day. The kids were divided into Egyptian families this year, mixing up the age levels. It was great to see the leadership of the older kids - lots of little ones naturally paired with their older 'brothers and sisters' for the week. A God Sighting, for sure! The picture is perfectly creepy. Here's Joseph, still in the prison. Yeah! Joseph made it to the Palace! Huge celebration on Friday, with parents encircling the room, blankets being blessed, and 140+ children happily singing and dancing those wonderful VBS songs that stay in your head all year long! An energizing, exhausting and completely exhilarating Egyptian adventure! I can't wait for next year!

Cultivating a Faith that Grows! Ollie MacDonald has a farm. . . that he just bought. Kids will join Ollie and his wife, Sarah, as they learn the ins and outs of farm life. Along the way, they will learn the ins and outs of living in faith and seeing the faithfulness of God. Click here to sample the first lesson for FREE. _______ Faith On The Farm Lessons Overview MEMORY VERSE: “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20b (NIRV) Lessons: Ollie MacDonald Scripture: Genesis 15:1-6, God's Covenant with Abram There is a lot for Ollie MacDonald to learn in order to have a fully functioning farm. Some days Ollie's not sure he'll ever be a real farmer. When God told Abram that he would have a son in his old age, Abram had the faith to believe God. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful believe what God says. The Farmer's Wife Scripture: Genesis 18:1-15, The Three Visitors The day Ollie couldn't figure out how to turn on his own tractor, his wife Sarah couldn't help but laugh. When Abraham's wife Sarah heard that she would have a son in her old age, her doubt caused her to laugh. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful never need to doubt God. Chicken Coop Scripture: Luke 13:23-35, The Narrow Door The other day Ollie fixed the only door into the coop; now his chickens can once again go into the coop to get warm and stay safe. Our only way to God is through the narrow door – Jesus. Those who enter find love, peace and safety. Objective: Kids will learn the Faithful know that Jesus is the only way. Farm Equipment Scripture: Matthew 11:27-30, My Yoke is Easy Ollie spends his days learning how to use the tractor, the thresher, and all the other pieces of equipment on the farm. It's hard work, but not nearly as hard as the old days when farmers had to tie animals to a yoke to plow the fields. Jesus said that those who tie themselves to Him will find that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. Objective: Kids will learn – Christmas reminds us that God gives us a family to love and to love us. Wheat Fields Scripture: Matthew 9:35-38, The Harvest is Plentiful The main crop on the farm is wheat, the most widely eaten grain in all the world. Ollie is still learning the best way to plant, grow and harvest this grain which is in such high demand. Jesus told his disciples that the fields were ripe for harvest, meaning that many people were ready to hear the good news and become His disciples. Someone just had to go out and tell them about Jesus. Objective: Kids will learn that the Faithful share their faith with others. Sheep Flock Scripture: John 10:11-18, The Good Shepherd Sarah loves their small flock of sheep that they raise for the wool. Every day she goes out and talks to the sheep – they have learned to recognize her voice and even come to the fence when they hear it. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects the sheep at all costs. Objective: Kids will learn the Faithful know that Jesus laid down His life for them. Sam, the Sheep Dog Scripture: Luke 15:1-7, The Parable of the Lost Sheep Sometimes the sheep get out of the pen and wander off. That's why the MacDonalds are so thankful for their trusty sheep dog, Sam, who helps lead them back to the pen. When we wander away like sheep, Jesus seeks us out and brings us back home. Objective: Kids will learn that even when the Faithful go astray, Jesus never gives up on them. Mustard Seed Crop Scripture: Matthew 17:14-20, Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy While the MacDonalds' main crop is wheat, they have a small bit of land where they harvest mustard seeds. Jesus told his disciples that even with a small bit of faith – as small as a mustard seed – they could do great things for God. Objective: Kids will learn that even with just a little faith, the Faithful can do great things for God. _______ Each Lesson Includes: Make It Stick!
