I've been sewing along with Kathleen @KathleenMcMusing and others, making the Fab Farm quilt designed by Elizabeth Hartman! This week we're working on the pig block!!! Here's the pattern cover and the full size quilt. ⤵️ I'm making the baby size quilt, which is 1/4 the blocks and size. My first tip in making the Fab Farm quilt is to choose fabrics that have strong contrast with your background. The original background is grey. ⤴️ Due to the coloring of some of the animals, a standard white/cream background won't work. I'm using a grey Grunge for background. I loved these two fabrics for the strawberry block, left below ⤵️. But from a distance, the green blended into the grey background too much, and I had to remake it with a stronger contrast. That was a good lesson to learn on the first block--I rethought my fabric choices after that. My second tip is to use stickers to label each of the different pieces. These stickers ⤵️ were from the Dollar Tree. One sticker for each of the letters is sufficient, and if there are multiple pieces with the same letter, clip them together with Wonder Clips. I stored them on one of my foam core boards while assembling.⤵️ My third tip is about pressing. Elizabeth Hartman gives a blanket statement to "press all seams open". Sometimes it's easier though to press to the side, especially if there are 2 or 3 seams on one side and no seams on the other. So feel free to press to the side, when the seams want to go that way. But! When there are a lot of seams that come together, they need to be pressed open. Here's my new favorite notion in the studio ⤵️, a 20" Ewe & Me Wooly Pressing Bar!!! It makes pressing seams open so easy! And it doubles as a clapper. I recommend getting the 20" length--you'll want it for pressing larger quilt seams open, too. Interesting Info: "Buta" is pig in Japanese (pronounced boo-ta), and a pig says, "buu, buu" in Japanese, not oink, oink! Here are my first seven blocks! ⤴️ There are ten blocks in all. Kathleen McMusing will have another link party when we reach block ten. Check out her tips for the pig block today, also! Grace and peace!!! ~Nancy Check out all the quilt inspiration at Patchwork & Quilts, Oh Scrap, Handmade Monday, Sew & Tell, Design Wall Monday, Monday Musings, Monday This N That.
This morning I sat down and decided to see how far I could get with my Farmyard Animals Designs - I have 6 more friends waiting to meet everyone - First up we have Mrs Bull - or Cow as she is more affectionately known. Soft natured, lovely long eyelashes and a great big .... nose - I was going to say nose. Mr Bull loves her - nose. Following on Cow's hooves we have li'll Calf. What a little love. Mom's heart and Dad's pride. Li'll bullybeef in his suede coat is such a charmer. Next up Mr and Mrs Cockerell. 'Rooster and Hen' to their friends. Always on the look for a little something someone left behind. They're not fussy. Never far from each other all day except at 6:00am when Rooster climbs the barn and lords it over the farmyard. Hot on their heels it's Horse. A real trustworthy hardworking type. Not only good looking but really tall too. Seems to enjoy the childen riding him around the meadows. Last up today is Rabbit. Who the hell knows what he does all day, but he's got a great set of teeth on him this one, and can run - as fast as, well - as a rabbit. Here we have the Farmyard as it is at the moment. I actually have 4 more in the pipeline. Once these 12" (30cm) patterns have their instructions all done, I'll be putting them on my Craftsy Shop with all the others. Have a Great Monday!

Quote: Originally Posted by Christy I may have overlooked the explanation but when you say "farmhouse quilt"s, is it a certain pattern or is it a style of putting the quilt together? The longer I am a quilter, and it's only been about 4 1/2 years, the more I understand my way of choosing a quilt to make and that other people don't do that the same way as I do. Up to this point I have chosen a quilt by seeing something already done and deciding I would like to make that. I don't choose kits because I like to avoid the cookie cutter exact copying, but I like to see and choose the overall look. I agree with you Christy! Your second paragraph explains the heart of the matter--not choosing a kit and instead building a quilt look that speaks to you. Your question makes me stop and think: what does the term farmhouse quilts means to me? DH Jon and I live in a rescued/restored 1893 Victorian Farmhouse on 9 acres. But more than an old house, I am a fan of farmhouse comfortable--and describe it as practical, made using whatever's handy sometimes, not delicate or so precious that I'd give it a second thought about whether or not its ok to use it everyday use. I name my quilts, because I want to remember every one of them (and believe it or not naming them helps me remember). I have a little chuckle when a customer reintroduces themselves to me, saying "yeah, I'm the one who bought "Cheese Platter Quilt." Oh yeah I say, now I remember you--hey, that was my favorite quilt. That's like a pick up line, you know. Some people embrace it, and some just kid me and say, "I bet you say that to all your customers!" Bottom line: it's all about having fun. These last two quilts "Farmhouse 1.0 and Farmhouse 2.0" are easy on the eyes, made from this n' that--what was handy at the time, simple traditional 4-patch blocks. I like to think the farmhouse quilts would look good on a clothesline, or covering an old sofa, or covering YOU snug as a bug in your bed.
Oh my Heck! I've been waiting impatiently for this weeks Farm Girl Friday:) I'm having so much fun with this sew along ...
Pressing quilt seams is a crucial step of any quilt-making process – not only will it make it easier to join blocks, it will also make a quilt lie flatter.

Another busy week. I was busy with the administration of an organisation for swimming lessons for children of parents who cannot afford a lot of money for swimming lessons. Dutch children and children of immigrants. There is a lot of water in The Netherlands and every year there are more children who drown. There was a time every child learned to swim and went with the school to swimming lessons for free, but now it is the responsibility of the parents and swimming lessons are not cheap. One of the jobs I had to do is selling tickets for a lottery. I never thought I would do that!! Drukke week. Mad family: Bull pattern These two bulls where so friendly to pose for me. I hope they like the result. I finished the bull pattern of my Mad Cow family. I learned that it is so important to test a pattern before publishing. Sewing a green mad bull, I find out that my pattern was impossible to sew!! So I changed the pattern I treid to sew a Mad Bull again and it is OK now. The pattern is ready to download for your own non commercial use only. You find the mad cow at piecemealquilts.com and my mad calf pattern here. Mad Bull: Pattern part 1: 12 inch 10 inch 8 inch Pattern part 2 Mad calf pattern part 1 2 colors 6 inch 3 colors 6 inch 2 colors 8 inch 3 colors 8 inch Pattern part 2 Pattern mad cow 10,5 inch Cup and mug I do not like to drink tea, So I do not why I made this pattern of a mug with a teabag?! But it is a easy fun pattern to sew. So is the the pattern of this coffee cup, easy with a pattern of one section. \ Pattern 5 inch: part 1 and part 2 An easy one section pattern: 4 inch: 5 inch\ pattern part2 Boothie This boothie I sewed weeks ago, but I finished the pattern this week. Boothie 8 inch pattern part 1 10 inch pattern part 1 Pattern part 2 Have fun using my patterns, but it is only for non commercial and private use only. So nice of you to stopping by. Feel free to leave a comment. I love it. Love from Amsterdam and keep quilting and sewing Maartje [email protected]

This is the fastest way to piece bits and pieces together with remarkable accuracy!I had a pile of little 2.5” squares just sitting here collecting dust; these are called “crumbs” in the precut quilting world. Instead of piecing each one to the next in the traditional (tedious) way, I figured I’d break out an old technique from the years of colorwash quilts!I cut a 20” square piece of basic fusible apparel interfacing. Then, I laid it down with the bumpy side up (the bumps are the fusible glue
