Not surprised at all that a small wiener was behind Napoleon... but Marlon Brando?
Meet 3-year-old red smooth 'Gage' and his human Alicia Meyer, who hail from Hugo, Minnesota. Gage is now the three-time champion of the annual Dachshund Dash at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, having won again at the race earlier this month. Go Gage Go! Excerpt from Press Publications: In his second race last year, Gage had to come from behind. Alicia didn't hear the start signal and released Gage a little late. But even with the head start, the dozen other dogs couldn't defeat the champion. At a national race last year in Kansas City, Gage had to settle for a second-place finish. At that track, each dog is placed in a box and the race begins when the box's door opens. Gage got a bit frightened in the box and got off to a slow start. High gas prices are keeping Gage and the Meyers from traveling back for a second chance at the national title. But Gage will compete at another local race this September during James J. Hill Days in Wayzata. Read all about Gage's race to fame at Press Publications.

Cats and dogs are cool enough on their own, but just in case you weren't convinced about this verified fact, here are some famous people with their pets to convince you. Given how most of the pet owners on this list are larger-than-life celebrities, it's nice to know that even they enjoyed the company of pets just like we do. Sure, maybe not all of us can afford an ocelot like Salvador Dali, but it's nice to know that even he had a cat to scratch behind the ears from time to time.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau (11 June 1910 – 25 June 1997) was a French naval officer, explorer, ecologist, filmmaker, scientist, and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He was the most famous undersea explorer in the world, known by his dozens of books and films from the 1950s until his death in 1997. The co-inventor of the aqualung (an underwater breathing apparatus) in 1943, Cousteau also pioneered techniques in underwater photography and explored the oceans of the world aboard his vessel Calypso. His filmmaking career included three Oscars, frequent television specials and the series, The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau (1966). In his later years Cousteau devoted himself to educating the public on environmental issues, and working with the Cousteau Foundation, founded in 1973 to further marine research and exploration. Jacques Cousteau was also a dachshund lover. It's amazing to think of the wonderful and mysterious things that his dachshunds, which included red smooths 'Bulle' and 'Scaphandrier,' must have experienced in their travels with their beloved human. The above photo of Mr. and Mrs. Cousteau, and presumably Bulle, was taken in 1959 on board the Calypso. Bulle muzzles 'Douala,' a mona monkey named for the Cameroons port where diver Jean Delmas bought her. The monkey, whose fierce attachment to Delmas became a shipboard joke, sulks on her master's shoulder. (Source: National Geographic Magazine, 1958) Scaphandrier, whose French name means "deep-sea diver," deigned to take an occasional swim, but preferred to pace the quarter-deck with the captain and supervise the cook's activities in the galley. Scaphe never tired of looking into the hose for rabbits. (Source: National Geographic Magazine, 1954) Cousteau with Scaphandrier on his lap, on board Calypso, 1955. See 3 additional photos at MIT Museum. Finally, singer/songwriter John Denver was a huge admirer of Jacques Cousteau and his championing of environmental issues, and wrote the song Calypso in 1975. Enjoy it here, along with some of Cousteau's fantastic underwater adventures. We're saddened when we think of what Mr. Cousteau would feel about the state of our world's waters today, and the massive loss of creatures who inhabit them. Have a great Sunday.

Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you still can't track deer in your spare time - and this handsome wirehaired boy named 'Zeus' is a perfect example. Zeus lives in a condominium in downtown Columbus, Ohio, with his human Patrick McCaffrey Jr., a busy lawyer. But they love to spend their free time helping fellow hunters find their wounded game - for free! Excerpt from The Columbus Dispatch: He shares a name with a Greek god, but — with his short legs, big nose and hairy back — is easily underestimated. “Most people laugh when they see him — until he gets out in the woods,” said McCaffrey, an outdoorsman, 51, who spends more time these days helping fellow hunters than bringing down game himself. “He gets a whiff of blood, and he’s a wolf. The blood tells him there’s an animal out there that he needs to hunt down.” This time of year, Zeus is the cat’s meow for dozens of hunters who have shot a deer but can’t close the deal. Zeus finds the deer about 30 percent of the time — sometimes dead, sometimes alive, McCaffrey said. The dog’s small stature proves to be an asset: His nose stays close to the ground, and he is easier to control on a leash — which the state requires for tracking dogs. Read more about Zeus and his adventures, and see another photo at The Columbus Dispatch.

In The Cat Inside William Burroughs paid a great compliment to his favorite animals: “My relationships with my cats has saved me from a deadly, pervasive ignorance.” Now, isn’t that a true thing? That our relationship with animals can have such a benevolent influence. I’m spending the week looking after a friend’s dog (a cute, wee strawberry-blonde, Lakeland Terrier), who has, over the years, taught me much about myself, for which I will always be grateful. In thanks for that, here is a small selection of some interesting people and their lovely animal companions. James Dean and his cat, Marcus, a gift from Elizabeth Taylor, who took custody of Marcus after Dean’s death. Marilyn Monroe and her Terrier, Maf. Humphrey Bogart and his beloved Scottish Terrier. Paul McCartney wrote a song about his English Sheepdog Martha While Cat Stevens proclaimed ‘I Love My Dog’ - the title of his first single. Freddie Mercury loved cats, and he also wrote a song about his favorite, Delilah. Yoko, John and friend. Joan Baez and her friend. The best cure for a hangover, Errol Flynn and Arno. Lana...

‘Public opinion and liberal principles’ heette die voordracht.
